Hazardous Environment Breathing

From The Codex
Luffy is able to fully breathe poisons into his body.

Background

Hazardous Environment Breathing is the ability to breathe in environments that are toxic, hazardous, or otherwise uninhabitable for average humans. Characters with this ability may survive in areas filled with poisonous gases, extreme temperatures, or other harmful substances that would typically prevent respiration. This ability may stem from biological adaptations, environmental conditions of their origin, or the use of specialized equipment.

Applications

  • Enables survival in toxic or otherwise harmful environments without suffocation.
  • May provide resistance or immunity to certain toxins, gases, or airborne hazards.
  • Facilitates exploration or combat in locations inhospitable to others.

Variations

Natural Hazardous Environment Breathing

  • Characters born in or adapted to specific toxic environments possess this ability innately. Their physiology is resistant or immune to environmental hazards, such as poisons, radiation, or extreme temperatures.
    • 'Examples:

Equipment-Based Hazardous Environment Breathing

  • This variation allows users to survive hazardous environments using technological devices or suits designed to filter or neutralize harmful substances.

Ability-Based Hazardous Environment Breathing

  • Users with this variation rely on supernatural, psiconic, or magical abilities to breathe in hazardous conditions. This could involve a resistance spell, transformation, or inherent powers granting immunity to toxins or pollutants.
    • Examples:

Selective Hazardous Environment Breathing

  • Characters may only breathe in specific hazardous environments they are accustomed to. For instance, they could survive in sulfur-filled areas but not in areas filled with corrosive acids.

Users

  • Samus Aran (Metroid): Uses advanced Power Suit technology to breathe in hazardous areas.
  • Olimar (Pikmin): Olimar survives in environments rich in oxygen, which is poisonous to his species, thanks to his natural biology.

Possible Limitations

  • Being able to breathe in one hazardous environment does not guarantee survival in all others.
  • Equipment-based breathing requires functioning gear; failure or damage may render users vulnerable.
  • Natural adaptations may limit the user to specific conditions (e.g., breathing in sulfur but not chlorine gas).
  • Hazards beyond breathing (e.g., temperature, pressure, corrosive materials) may still harm the user.
