Boundary Manipulation

From The Codex

Background

Boundary Manipulation is the ability to manipulate the boundaries between different concepts, spaces, or dimensions. It grants the user the power to alter the limits or separations between various elements, allowing them to bypass or distort the lines that define different states, realms, or forces.

While similar to Duality Manipulation as both involve altering fundamental limits or separations, they differ in focus, Duality Manipulation specifically deals with the manipulation of opposing or complementary forces, such as light and dark, order and chaos, or life and death. In contrast, Boundary Manipulation focuses more on controlling the actual divisions or separations between entities, whether they are physical, dimensional, temporal, or conceptual. In essence, Boundary Manipulation is about altering the boundaries that separate different forces, spaces, or concepts, while Duality Manipulation is about the alteration or interaction between opposing dualities within those boundaries.

Also Called

  • Boundary Control
  • Boundary Distortion
  • Limit Manipulation

Possible Applications

  • Dimensional Boundary Manipulation: The ability to manipulate the boundaries between different dimensions or planes of existence. This allows users to shift between worlds, create portals, or even erase barriers between dimensions.
    • Example: A character who can tear open portals to other dimensions by manipulating the space between realms.
  • Conceptual Boundary Manipulation: The ability to manipulate the boundaries between abstract concepts such as good and evil, order and chaos, or life and death.
    • Example: A character able to bend the concepts of life and death to temporarily bring back the dead or cause life to decay.
  • Physical Space Boundary Manipulation: Users can reshape or manipulate the physical boundaries of space, such as walls, doors, or even create new spatial divisions, effectively altering the environment around them.
    • Example: A character who can make walls appear and disappear, trapping enemies or blocking attacks by manipulating the boundaries of space itself.
  • Time Boundary Manipulation: The ability to manipulate the temporal boundaries, allowing users to bend time, travel through different time periods, or stop the passage of time itself.
    • Example: A character who can pause or rewind time by manipulating the boundaries between moments.
  • Energy Boundary Manipulation: The ability to control the boundaries between different forms of energy. This could involve containing or redirecting energy, such as manipulating the boundary between heat and cold to freeze or burn objects.
    • Example: A character who can stop energy from leaking out of a power source, allowing them to absorb or control dangerous forces.

Potential Types

  • Dimensional Boundary Manipulation: The manipulation of boundaries between different dimensions or planes of existence.
  • Temporal Boundary Manipulation: The ability to control the flow of time by manipulating its boundaries.
  • Physical Space Boundary Manipulation: The manipulation of physical boundaries, such as walls, doors, or barriers.
  • Conceptual Boundary Manipulation: The ability to affect abstract or conceptual boundaries between ideas, philosophies, or forces.
  • Energy Boundary Manipulation: The control over the boundaries of different energy types, enabling the user to alter or redirect energy flow.

Possible Limitations

  • Resource Limitation: The ability may require specific energy or conditions to manipulate boundaries, limiting how often or how far the user can manipulate them.
  • Vulnerability: The user may be vulnerable to attacks or outside interference while manipulating boundaries, as the act of creating or distorting boundaries may require concentration or energy.
  • Spatial Restrictions: Some boundaries, especially in the case of dimensional or time manipulation, may have limitations in their scope, preventing the user from affecting certain areas or periods.

Users

  • Lain Iwakura Serial Experiments Lain: Lain completely destroyed the boundary between the Wired and the real world, allowing her to go anyplace she wants to and control reality as she sees fit.
  • The Noise (The World Ends With You): The Noise mere existence through rapidly multiplying deteriorates the boundary between the RG and the UG, causing the boundary to eventually be lost and the city to be torn apart and purified.
