Introudction
This blog is for the soul purpose of fully undoubtedly proving rings are not only canon to the Sonic universe (because there's people that unironically think that), but also that they canonically act as extra damage buff for Sonic.
Proof They Exist
This one will be stupidly easy to prove.
- A little known thing called the "Light/Air Shoes" allow Sonic and Shadow to move at the speed of light whenever they're near rings. The Light Speed Dash is obviously a canon ability and it coincides with the needed use of rings in order to use it.
- In Shadow the Hedgehog Tails acknowledges Eggman stealing rings with a mission being to take all of the lost rings back.
I think this is more then enough to prove they exist.
Proof They Act as an Extra Hit
Now there's people that agree rings exist, but then try to argue them being damage sponge is a game mechanic, funnily enough this is correct (but they're confusing it in this case with Ludonarrative Dissonance rather then standard game mechanics we naturally use for feats), but they're also canonically accepted as being a damage sponge element in verse. But know what, let's use something that objectively cannot be a game mechanic, shall we?
- As we know, Sonic Prime is canon (more on that in my Sonic canon blog), Sega was directly involved with the show to make sure everything was right with the mythos, with that being said, Sonic directly collects rings, and loses rings from taking a hit. So now that we know it objectively isn't a game mechanic and a canon element to the mythos.
- In Sonic Adventure's Sonic playthrough, his opening cutscenes is him finding Perfect Chaos, when getting into the boss fight with him he jumps directly into two rings. Now some people try to argue this is due to the fact that Sonic Adventure already uses pre-rendered cutscenes that are the same battlefield as the boss, now this would be a fair point, except this is ignoring that the game developers went out of their way to have Sonic in cutscene jump directly into the rings, make a collect rings sound effect, and then conveniently the start of the boss fight starts Sonic has 2 rings on hand. This is pretty much undeniable evidence.
- Characters directly, need rings to restore their energy, conveniently enough in Super Sonic bosses like Sonic Adventure 2, characters note rings charge their energy. A direct power of the rings here is noted in both cutscene and gameplay.
- Speaking of the final boss of Sonic Adventure 2, characters directly note that characters are noting to collect and use rings in their super form. The final boss of Shadow the Hedgehog, also notes Shadow needs rings.
- The entire Shadow boss fight in Sonic Generations where the only way to beat the other is by getting them to 0 rings and then attacking them, most people oddly enough, accept this but say this is inconsistent... even though there's no contradictions to it.
Now as I've shown direct cutscenes and canon game fights where rings are used for sponge hits or to keep a character alive, I have more then fulfilled my burden that I can now use the game manuals.
- In basically every game manual the function of rings are that they allow someone to survive hits. Also before one argues the Adventure 2 one where it says "except Tails and Eggman", this is because Tails and Eggman are directly inside of non-sentient bipedal machines, and from what we remember from Sonic Rivals scans I sent above, rings can also energize technology, so what's happening is that they use the rings to energize their mechs, this is consistent with the fact that collecting rings heals your mech in Sonic Adventure 2. This is honestly why Tails and Eggman don't get protected by rings, they use them to energize their machine so they themselves technically have 0 rings, and what do you know? If their mech reaches 0 health they conveniently get one-shotted along with it.
