Background

Hey, do you know about the Seven Wonders in this school……? Rumours abound at Kamome Academy, about the most famous of the Seven Wonders.

It's said that Hanako-san is in the third stall of the third-floor girls' bathroom in the old school building, and will grant any wish of the person who summons them. The method of summoning is simple: knock 3 times. And then–––

"Hanako-san, Hanako-san... are you there?"

"Y–e–s……"

To have her wish granted, occult girl Yashiro Nene has summoned Hanako-san. But the ghost that appeared before her is a boy.

"Hanako-kun". Nene gets involved in all sorts of supernatural stories by Hanako-kun, who's sadistic and slightly-- perverted despite being a ghost. Will Nene ever be able to lead a peaceful school life again? A heartwarming comedy that no one has ever seen before begins now...

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (地縛少年花子くん Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun?), also known as Toilet-bound Hanako-kun in English, is a 12-episode TV anime adaptation based off of the manga of the same name by AidaIro, to be aired starting January 9, 2020 on TBS, SUN, CBC, and BS-TBS channels. The official English dub of the series is licensed by Funimation and is being released on their website.

An anime adaptation was officially announced in Square Enix's GFantasy magazine's April 2019 issue. Its official twitter account was launched on the same day.

The anime's official site opened on July 12, 2019 and revealed a teaser visual along with that Studio Lerche is in charge of animation production, with Masaomi Andō directing the series, Yasuhiro Nakanishi handling series composition and script, Mayuka Itō as character designer, and Yūji Higa as its producer.

Hanako's character design was revealed on October 9, 2019, with silhouettes for Nene's and Kou's designs. These were revealed a month later on November 9 in conjunction with the Animate Girls' Festival 2019, and the website was revamped with a new key visual and additional information. The main voice cast was revealed to be Ogata Megumi (Hanako), Kitō Akari (Yashiro Nene), and Chiba Shōya (Minamoto Kou). Broadcast timings and an advance screening for Episode 1 were also announced.

Power of the Verse

Toilet-Bound Hanako Kun as a series, is known for their wide range of powerful and potent abilities because of strong supernaturals such as the 7 Wonders of the school, old apparitions that have existed for a long time, Exorcists which despell evil supernaturals, and the general public, which can shape reality with rumors and supernatural items. Weak supernatruals, such as Mokke, are around 10-C in their base form but are able to change their size when in danger and kill people and super naturals alike. They are able to steal your items with out you knowing, even when the person has enhanced senses. They can also wither your soul away with an illness. Middle tier supernaturals are a threat to humans and unexperienced Exorcists. They can range from 9-B to 7-B from being able to affect an entire town with their power and have everyone fall under their abilities. The Confession Tree, which is a middle tier supernatrual, was able to affect the entire town with a charm spell, making everyone fall in love with random people. Many of the middle tier supernaturals are able to do things like affect the weather, change reality around them, affect people with spells such as charm, sleep, mind control, and various others. High tier supernaturals are unbound from the laws of the world and can act freely. They are usally spirits that have existed for thousands or millions of years on both the Near Shore and the Far Shore. These supernaturals are extremely powerful and are able to affect the laws of reality, resist things like getting their concepts erased, they are one of the only types of supernaturals that are able to not have rumors or follow them. Some of these supernaturals don't exist in any of the two worlds as they don't have rumors and are not known. These supernaturals tend to be around 6-A due to their abilities being able to affect the entierty of Japan. Yako, in her pre-School Wonder state, exists as an Inari staute. Inari statutes are able to bless the entire country with good blessings for Tsuyu (The rain season of Japan). Higher level supernaturals should scale to Yako in this form.

Lastly, the School's 7 Wonders are the most powerful supernatural characters in the verse thus far. They are described as the pillars of the human world and the supernatural told. While outside of their Boundaries, their tiers vary from 10-C to 9-B as they are capable of destroying trees and breaking walls causally. They are able to use abilites such as sealing, soul manipulation, conceptual manipualtion, use time manipulation that works on Extra-Temporal characters, and other abilities while outside of their boundaries. Hanako was able to seal Kou's weapon, which is an ancient exorcist tool that nullifies every ability from supernaturals. Hanako took away it's power by sealing it. While inside of their boundaries, they become massively stronger in tier and their abilities become far more potent. In their boundaries, they are all 4-A and scale to each other as they are have the highest amount of spirit energy in the school. They can do things like copying the entire cosmology inside of their boundaries at will, completely ignore the laws of reality, ignore and restrict abilities of other characters, and more. Each supernatural, including the fodder spirits have Extra-Temporal speeds and have some degree of reality warping and soul manipulation.

Terms

  • Rumors:Rumors shape reality in the universe. Everyone in the verse is able to use or manipulate rumors, even normal people. Most supernaturals rely on them in order to exist in the human world and they can't normally go agaisnt them. They can manipulate the truth of the world and can rewrite history itself.
  • Supernaturals:Supernaturals and ghosts are both used interchangeably and share many traits with each other. In other words, ghosts can also be referred to be a type of supernatural. Both need rumors in order to exist on the Near Shore, and can either originate from the Far Shore themselves or created out of someone's ideals in special cases.

Ghosts and supernaturals can be forcibly severed from their tie on the Near Shore after a sacrifice is offered.

Unlike ghosts, they can show themselves at will to normal humans. Despite being supernaturals themselves, Tsuchigomori can disguise himself as a teacher by hiding his spider-like appendages and long ears, in addition to Yako being seen by Misaki in her human-like and fox appearances (including his students catching glimpses of her and assuming the courtyard must be haunted). They are able to be touched and can interact with ghosts and humans. They are presumably able to age unlike ghosts, as signified by Tsuchigomori's older appearance and Yako's growth from being a child to her current adult like look.

  • Boundaries:Boundaries 境界 (Kyōkai?) are the seas that connect the Near Shore with the Far Shore. They can be accessed in various ways. In said Boundaries, life and death don't exist so nothing can be brought to life, nor can anything die in a boundary

They were introduced in Chapter 4, when Kou described his older brother telling him about these boundaries that connect both shores.

There is a stretch of water running between deserted buildings and telephone poles, and the sun can be seen descending in the horizon. Kou also mentions how forgotten objects such as used dolls, broken television boxes, and other vintage articles are discarded and have drifted to piles.

There are two types of Boundaries. A normal boundary is a boundary that has no owner and is filled with random supernaturals. They hold no significant purpose in the verse and can vary in size. We can see one of these when Hanako, Nene, Kou, and Yako went to the Star Festival. The festival was located in a boundary that had no owner.

The second type of boundary is one owned by a School Wonder. These Boudaries are the personal domain of the School Wonder who owns it and is where their Yorishiro resides. These boundaries can not be destroyed unless the yorishiro is destroyed and they don't get erased forever as they comeback right after it's destroyed. There are 8 of these boundaries owned by the School Wonders

  • Yorishiro:A divine Yorishiro (依代) is the most precious possession of a School Wonder.

The yorishiro acts like a battery that provides the school Wonders with power and is kept in the innermost reaches of a school Wonders's boundary.

It has a black seal on it and will cause the School Wonders to be unbeatable while it is still intact.

In Volume 3, Hanako explains that there is a traitor in between the 7 Wonders who is changing the rumors. He then has the idea to simply erase the 7 Wonder for a while by destroying their yorishiro before they go out of control.

After Nene rips the seal off a yorishiro, she will drift to sleep and see a part of the memory that was connected to the item. They are unable to be broken unless you are bonded to a School Wonder.

  • Exorsist:Exorcists are special humans gifted with the power to hunt and destory evil supernaturals. They use a variety of spell, weapons, and other items to help them in their fight agaisnt supernaturals. While they can negate the physiology of most supernaturals and ignore their powers, they still are not able to defeat School Wonders.
  • Near Shore and Far Shore:The Near Shore (alternatively known as the human world) is a place where the living exists. Only those from the Far Shore can exist on the Near Shore through rumors or powers. Teru admits there are one-way routes to the boundary closest to the Far Shore, such as the run-down building he came out from Chapter 69. However, he was only able to use these routes by forcing them open with his power.

More formally, there is a gateway between both worlds hidden in an open cave. There are stalactites hanging from the wall, and tassels weaving through the cave walls. In order to activate it, Teru wiped his blood on one of the walls, which opened a gaping tunnel of water connecting to one of Kamome Gakuen's hallways. Guided by the light at the end, one must not look behind them while trekking through, or otherwise they would not be able to go return to the Near Shore.

The Far Shore is a place known to be the world of the dead. The closest boundary to the Far Shore is No.6's boundary. There is an open pit in the middle of the interwoven Japanese-styled building, rumored to be the entrance to the Far Shore. When a living person enters the Far Shore, their body will deteriorate until only their soul is left behind.

However, it was also mentioned that Sumire's village was relatively near a cliff that led to the Far Shore. There are spikes submerged in the water below. Monstrous creatures would appear from the depths of the water and wreak havoc, which led the villagers to sacrifice a chosen maiden of the Akane family in order to appease them.
