Frankenstein's Monster

From The Codex
Jump to navigationJump to search

Introduction

The name Frankenstein's Monster refers to the creature created by Dr. Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Often simply referred to as "the Monster" in the text, there is widespread confusion where many people mistakenly call the creature "Frankenstein." While this is technically incorrect within the novel, it can be argued that the creature could share his creator’s surname, as Victor Frankenstein is effectively his surrogate father. Over time, this interpretation has gained cultural acceptance, leading to the name "Frankenstein" being commonly used to describe the Monster in various adaptations and retellings.

The character has since become an iconic figure in fiction, appearing in countless books, films, video games, and other media. Each portrayal offers a unique perspective on the Monster’s tragic existence, his search for identity, and his relationship with his creator.
