Background
Spatial Manipulation is the ability to change, warp, create, or destroy space. This allows the user to alter the fundamental fabric that separates objects and defines distance, position, and volume.
The user can freely change the space around them, creating corridors that extend endlessly, folding space to bring distant locations together, creating pocket dimensions, or compressing space to shrink distances. Some users can also destroy space entirely, creating voids where spatial relationships no longer function.
It should be noted that warping space is not automatically Spatial Manipulation. Celestial objects like black holes warp space as a side effect of their mass and gravity, not through any conscious ability. A character should demonstrate that the warping of space is an intentional trait they possess, not an incidental side effect of something else.
Also Called
- Space Manipulation
- Geometry Control
- Spatial Warping
- Dimensional Manipulation (when overlapping with pocket dimension creation)
- Spatiokinesis
Possible Applications
- Compressing or expanding distances between objects
- Creating loops or endless corridors
- Folding space to connect two distant locations
- Creating pocket dimensions or spatial pockets
- Teleportation by folding or cutting space
- Creating barriers by thickening space
- Cutting through space itself as an attack
- Creating areas where movement is impossible or warped
- Increasing or decreasing the internal volume of an object or container
- Creating spatial clones by occupying multiple positions simultaneously
Practical Uses
- Shortening Distance: Compressing space between the user and a target to close gaps instantly.
- Expanding Distance: Stretching space between the user and an attacker, making it impossible for them to close in.
- Endless Corridors: Creating loops in space so that moving in a straight line returns to the starting point.
- Pocket Realms: Creating small, self-contained spaces that exist separate from normal space.
- Spatial Cutting: Severing space itself, creating attacks that bypass physical durability by cutting the space the target occupies.
- Barriers: Thickening space into an impassable wall.
- Teleportation: Folding space so that two points overlap, then stepping through.
- Volume Manipulation: Making the inside of a small container larger than its exterior.
Example Requirements
- Personal Only: The user can only manipulate space directly around their own body, such as compressing the space they occupy to appear smaller.
- Touch Required: The user must physically touch an object or area to manipulate its space.
- Line of Sight: The user can only manipulate space they can see.
- Area-Based: The user creates a field or zone where spatial rules are altered, rather than targeting specific points.
- Creation Only: The user can create new space (pocket dimensions) but cannot destroy or compress existing space.
- Destruction Only: The user can destroy or tear space but cannot create or reshape it.
- Living Beings Excluded: The user's spatial manipulation does not work directly on living beings, they can warp the space around them but not the space a creature occupies.
Possible Limitations
- The user may be limited to manipulating space within a certain range
- Some users cannot manipulate space that contains living beings
- Spatial manipulation may require concentration or active maintenance
- Creating pocket dimensions may require more energy than simple compression or expansion
- Some settings have natural spatial stability that resists manipulation
- Overuse may cause spatial sickness, disorientation, or permanent damage to the user's spatial perception
- Opponents with their own spatial abilities may counter or resist manipulation
