Background

Dimensional Travel is the ability to move through alternate universes (or dimensions), crossing over different planes of existence to reach other, far-off locations. Dimensional Travel enables individuals to access and traverse alternate universes and planes of existence, potentially reaching worlds vastly different from their own. The mechanism of travel may vary, involving anything from teleportation to portal creation, to advanced technology. Some users might shift their consciousness across dimensions, while others physically move between planes. Dimensional Travel is often used to access alternate realities, future/past timelines, or other cosmic realms with different laws of physics.

This ability is typically a high-tier power, either existing as a unique trait or achieved via magical, technological, or psychic means.

Possible Applications

  • Exploration: Allows users to explore alternate worlds, timelines, or planes of existence with entirely different histories, inhabitants, and laws of physics.
  • Escape: Can be used to evade capture or danger by fleeing to a different universe or dimension. Effectively being a counter to Battlefield Removal.
  • Dimensional Combat: Engaging in battles across multiple planes of reality, using different dimensional fields to one's advantage.
  • Parallel World Manipulation: The ability to alter or influence events across different dimensions or realities.
  • Time Travel: Some dimensions may exist in alternate timelines, enabling a form of time travel by entering universes where events have unfolded differently.
  • Reality Warping: At a high level, users may be able to manipulate the fabric of different realities by merging or changing dimensions.
  • Multiverse Communication: The user could send messages or perceive events from parallel worlds or alternate universes.
  • Alternate Replacements: Some users can access other dimensions where their alternate selves exist, potentially granting a means to never truly die by transferring consciousness to their other selves.

Types

  • Portal Travel: The creation of doorways or rifts through which a user can step to cross into another dimension.
  • Teleportation-Based Travel: Using teleportation to move instantly between different universes or realms.
  • Phase-Shifting: The ability to shift between different dimensions by altering one's vibrational frequency or energy state.
  • Consciousness Transfer: Shifting one's consciousness into an alternate self or parallel version of their body in another universe.
  • Dimensional Anchoring: Remaining tethered to a single dimension but observing or manipulating events in others without fully crossing over.

Limitations

  • Dimensional Instability: Some dimensions may be unstable or have environments that are uninhabitable by the user.
  • Energy Requirements: Crossing dimensions might require vast amounts of energy, resources, or preparation, limiting the frequency or distance of travel.
  • Dimensional Locking: Certain dimensions may be "locked," preventing entry or exit without specific keys, artifacts, or permissions. This essentially makes them unable to escape through means such as Escape Prevention.
  • Time Dilation: Time may flow differently in other dimensions, leading to temporal paradoxes or making it difficult to return to the original world without consequences.
  • Inability to Control Destination: A user might not always have full control over which dimension they enter, leading to random or unintentional travel. A good example of this is SCP-507.
  • Psychic/Mental Strain: Moving across dimensions can put immense strain on the mind, leading to disorientation, memory loss, or insanity for the unprepared.
  • Dimensional Barriers: Some universes may have powerful barriers or guardians preventing unauthorized access. A good example is in the series Kingdom Hearts, where the worlds have special gates blocking entry without special means.
  • Existential Paradoxes: Encountering alternate versions of oneself can cause temporal or existential paradoxes, leading to catastrophic results for the traveler or the universe.
