Puella Magi Madoka Magica, also known as MadoMagi for short, is the first title in the Puella Magi series, a production of animation studio SHAFT and Aniplex under Atsuhiro Iwakami as a main producer. The series was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo and written by Gen Urobuchi with original character designs by Ume Aoki. Madoka Magica began development after Akiyuki Shinbo expressed his desire to work on a new magical girl series after Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha to producer Atsuhiro Iwakami while they were working on Hidamari Sketch and Bakemonogatari. The show, a total of 12 episodes, broadcasted on MBS, TBS and CBC between January 7, 2011 and April 21, 2011 with a delay after Episode 10, due to production and broadcast delays related to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. All Blu-rays and DVDs released were delayed by one month sequentially from its original plans. Besides the anime, tons of other Madoka Magica products have been released, including several manga spin-offs, a movie adaptation, and more. There exist "messengers of magic" who have the power to grant one wish to a chosen girl. However, that girl must then become a magical girl and fight against witches, evil creatures born from curses that are responsible for murders and suicides. A schoolgirl named Madoka Kaname and her friend Sayaka Miki are approached by one of these messengers of magic named Kyubey and a magical girl named Mami Tomoe with an offering to become a magical girl. But as this is all happening, Homura Akemi, another magical girl, tries to prevent Madoka and friends from making such a deal...Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion is the third movie of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie trilogy, serving as a sequel to the story. The movie premiered in Japan on October 26th, 2013. It is 120 minutes long.
Part A
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Homura's Revenge! is a manga spin-off by Golden Pe Done , originally serialized in Manga Time Kirara Magica issues 1 to 9. The series was collected into two volumes, with volume 1 collecting chapters 1 to 5 and volume 2 collecting chapters 6 to 9. Homura's Revenge! is a canon-divergent story where Homura takes Madoka back in time with her before Madoka makes her wish to erase all witches. The two plan to save the other magical girls and prevent the disastrous events of the canon timeline... except that Kyubey also returned with them, and plans to thwart their attempts to salvage the timeline in order to get Madoka to make a contract. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Different Story is a three-volume manga spin-off written by Masaki Hiramatsu and illustrated by Hanokage. The first volume begins as an adaptation of Drama CD 3, which details the events through which Mami and Kyoko meet for the first time and become witch-hunting partners. Ultimately, it culminates in an alternate timeline with a different outcome from the timelines shown in the anime.
Volume 1
Puella Magi Homura Tamura ~Parallel Worlds Do Not Remain Parallel Forever~ is a manga spin-off by afro originally serialized in Manga Time Kirara Magica starting from the first issue. A slice-of-life story focusing on the sillier aspects of the Madoka Magica timelines. It involves Homura travelling to many different timelines and getting stuck in ridiculous situations. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Wraith Arc is the seventh spin-off manga in the Puella Magi franchise, and the fourth written and illustrated by Hanokage, with the original concept for the story being written by Masaki Hiramatsu, writer of Puella Magi Kazumi Magica and Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Different Story. Wraith Arc serves as an interquel depicting the events that happened between Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. It began serialization in the 20th issue of Manga Time Kirara Magica released on June 10, 2015. It has three volumes. On May 21st, 2021, the English translation of the series was licensed by Yen Press, with the first volume released on November 23, 2021, the second on February 22, 2022, and the third volume on June 21, 2022.
Volume 1
Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record, also known as MagiReco for short, is a smartphone-exclusive role-playing game distributed by Aniplex and developed by F4samurai which was released on August 22, 2017. Originally slated for Mid-May 2017, the game was pushed back for further development. The game is available on iOS and Android. It follows the story of Iroha Tamaki, a magical girl who arrives at Kamihama City to find her missing younger sister. Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The Innocent Malice is the first spin-off in the Puella Magi franchise, written by Masaki Hiramatsu and illustrated by Takashi Tensugi. Volume 1

Volume 3
Volume 4
Volume 5
Puella Magi Oriko Magica is the second spin-off manga in the Puella Magi franchise. The story was written by Magica Quartet and illustrated by Kuroe Mura, with the two collected volumes published by Houbunsha. Volume 1 collects chapters 1 - 3 and volume 2 collects 4 - 7. Oriko Magica is a story taking place in one of the many timelines that occurs between timelines four and five of the Madoka Magica anime. Upon her birth as a magical girl, Oriko Mikuni sees a terrifying vision of the future of Mitakihara City, where the ultra-powerful witch Kriemhild Gretchen threatens to destroy the world. Horrified, Oriko vows to stop it and protect her world at any cost. She teams up with another magical girl, Kirika Kure, to do so; and upon seeing another vision of a young girl named Yuma Chitose, directs Kyubey towards contracting with her as a distraction. Meanwhile, Kyoko Sakura encounters Yuma after killing the witch that murdered her family, and reluctantly takes Yuma under her wing; and Mami Tomoe investigates a mysterious case of magical girl killings that been recently occurring.Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Extra Story is the third spin-off manga in the Puella Magi franchise, illustrated by Kuroe Mura. It is a collection of short side-stories that solely focus on, expand on, and flesh out the original Puella Magi Oriko Magica characters. Extra Story collects three separate Oriko Magica side-stories: one prequel and two involving an alternate timeline. Noisy Citrine is a prequel further explaining Kirika's backstory prior to joining Oriko, involving a new character called Erika Mamiya. Symmetry Diamond deals with an alternate timeline of Oriko Magica. Here, instead of seeing Kriemhild Gretchen after becoming a magical girl, Oriko sees Walpurgisnacht, and teams up with Kirika to fight it. Oriko does not predict Yuma at all, and later meets the girl in a park instead. The story expands a little on Yuma's home life, introduces her mother Mako Chitose as a proper character, and later introduces a new magical girl named Sasa Yuuki. Symmetry Diamond also explains what happens to Yuma in timelines where she doesn't contract: she either dies from Mako's abuse or lives a happy life with her grandparents. The Last Agate is a short exclusive to Extra Story, as it was not serialized in Kirara Magica. The Last Agate is a continuation of Symmetry Diamond, where Oriko and Kirika prepare to fight Walpurgisnacht. Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Sadness Prayer is the fifth spin-off manga in the Puella Magi franchise, illustrated by Kuroe Mura. It is a prequel to the first installment of Puella Magi Oriko Magica, set before the events of Oriko Magica, but after the prologue, where Oriko sees Kriemhild Gretchen and Yuma. A prequel to Oriko Magica, expanding on the original characters and introducing several new ones. Sadness Prayer shows how Oriko and Kirika first met and teamed up, expands on Oriko's family and school life, and expands on her and Kirika's feelings on having to kill magical girls to fulfill their goals. Puella Magi Suzune Magica is the fifth spin-off manga in the Puella Magi franchise, written and illustrated by GAN. It is one of three spin-offs that have been released after Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, with the other two being Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Sadness Prayer and Puella Magi Tart Magica: The Legend of "Jeanne d'Arc".
Volume 1
Puella Magi Tart Magica: The Legend of "Jeanne d'Arc" is a manga spin-off in the Puella Magi franchise, written and illustrated by Golden Pe Done. It is one of three spin-offs that have been released after the premiere of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, with the other two being Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Sadness Prayer and Puella Magi Suzune Magica.
Volume 1
Null Magical Girl is a light novel spin-off in the Puella Magi franchise, written by Gengen Kusano and illustrated by Aya Haruhana. It is the first spin-off to be released after the launch of Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record. In March 2021, the world continues to face the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. The story centers Kosane Kiriha, a 24-year-old graduate student whose life is on a downward trajectory. Due to COVID, She expects to be hopelessly unemployed when she graduates. In the wake of a head injury, Kosane Kiriha discovers she has no brain. Shortly afterwards, Kyubey appears before her and reveals the spacetime continuum is collapsing around her. Guided by a mysterious letter found her head, Kosane and Kyubey travel 800,000 years into the future. There, they encounter Homo magica, a species comprised only of Magical Girls. Haunted by the voice of her still-born twin sister, Kosane flees back to the present and learns that the year 2021 is a "closed-room" which she can't escape. Terms
- Doppel: A special ability that magical girls can use in the mobile game Magia Record. According to the official website "A select few Magical Girls in Kamihama City can summon a power known as a Doppel. Only awakened Magical Girls have this ability, which allows them to invoke a portion of the Witch power in their Soul Gem when it becomes fully tainted." Typically, a Magical Girl becomes a Witch when their Soul Gem becomes completely black from developing too many impurities. Inside Kamihama City, however, the "Doppel" power is invoked instead. When a Soul Gem becomes completely black, a manifestation of a Magical Girl's Witch form is summoned instead, taking on a variety of forms for each individual girl. Doppels are extremely powerful, making them useful in battle, but can come with high risks depending on the specific nature of the Doppel. From their in-game description, a Doppel's manifestation depends on several factors. For instance, though this is not always the case, older Magical Girls (or potentially, those who have been contracted longer, not necessarily one's actual age) experience a narrower range of emotions than younger Magical Girls, and as such their Doppels are more likely to appear fused to their master's body rather than as separate entities.
- Familiar: Lesser monsters divided out of the essence of a witch. Though normally assigned the task of maintaining and defending their mistress' barrier, it seems that they can eventually gain independence and stray to form their own barriers. A Familiar is a secondary enemy that a Witch creates for a variety of purposes, usually shortly after the Witch itself is born. After either eating a few humans or simply waiting for time to pass, they will grow into identical copies of their parent Witch, able to spawn their own Familiars and dropping their own Grief Seed (occasionally exploited in a practice known as "Witch farming"). This is frequently possible despite the original Witch having already been defeated -- indeed, the entire Witch population of Kamihama City save for Etteilla was created in this way. Unlike their parent Witches, Familiars are approximately weak enough for a human to do significant damage to them without magical assistance. Familiars do not drop any Grief Seeds when killed unless they have matured into a full Witch. According to the January 2012 Dengeki PlayStation, Familiars are "projections of the magical girl's heart before they became a witch".
- Grief Seed: A witch's egg, which occasionally appears after a witch is defeated. Magical girl require these items to restore their depleted magical energies. When a Soul Gem contains too many impurities and becomes completely black, it will transform into a Grief Seed, and its Magical Girl will become a Witch. All Grief Seeds drain impurities when used on a dim Soul Gem, replenishing a girl's magic and staving off their transformation into a Witch. In episode 6, Kyubey warns that absorbing too much impurities can revive the Witch. A Grief Seed that has been used before and already contains impurities will be unable to fully cleanse a Soul Gem. Because of how valuable they are, Magical Girls may also use Grief Seeds to test if they can cooperate with another Magical Girl; rejecting an offered Grief Seed from another Magical Girl means refusing to work with them and hostility. Both Mami and Homura peformed such kinds of tests.
- Evil Nuts: Evil Nuts are fake Grief Seeds, which appear as magical items in Kazumi Magica. They can be used to create fake witches (known as "pseudo-witches" to fans) from ordinary women and to change a magical girl into an uncontrollable monster. Women affected can be restored to their normal state if they are defeated, as the Evil Nut separates from her, much like when a normal witch drops a Grief Seed. Unlike regular witches, the women return to normal after they are defeated instead of simply dying. The women affected sometimes have their memories of these events erased by Umika Misaki. They are used by both Yuuri and the Soujus from the beginning of the story, but their origins remain unknown until much later. The witches created by them can be detected only by Kazumi's ahoge. Unlike conventional Grief Seeds, Incubators cannot consume them. They apparently do not activate on their own like Grief Seeds, but must be inserted into a host via the forehead by a magical girl. In Chapter 18, it is revealed that the Evil Nuts were created (and distributed to Yuuri and the Soujus) by Kanna Hijiri. They are a combination of Umika Misaki's analysis magic and Niko Kanna's regeneration magic.
- Labyrinth: An otherworld used by witches to conceal themselves. Should a normal human wander in by accident, it is impossible for them to escape. In the anime, these locations are designed and animated by Gekidan Inu Curry in a style vastly different from that of the rest of the series in order to reinforce the otherworldly aspect. Inside and outside of the anime they are sometimes referred to as "mazes". According to the January 2012 Dengeki PlayStation, the barrier is "a space resembling the Magical Girl's mental landscape before they became a Witch". The barrier can be based off a lot of things, such as where the girl became a Witch, what their Soul Gem or Grief Seed motifs are or were, what they liked, and/or what their wish was. This can be proven by looking at Oktavia von Seckendorff's barrier. It has a theme of longing for Kyosuke, since Sayaka's wish was to heal his hand. The ulterior motive behind the wish was for Kyosuke to love her, but this didn't happen. There is a Kyosuke-like figure shown in her barrier. Additionally, she became a witch at a train station, and at the beginning of episode 8 we see trains in Oktavia's barrier.
- Law of Cycles: The Law of Cycles is an extra-universal system created by Madoka Kaname for the purpose of killing and archiving Magical Girls who are about to become Witches. As the future of the universe in which Magia Record takes place is still being written, the Law of Cycles has no access to it, and it is further implied that the summoning system also has to cheat (as Nagisa Momoe was summoned into the Mirror Witch's labyrinth, known to connect alternate universes). Despite this, Madoka is sometimes able to force her support through.
- Magical Girls: Girls who have formed a contract with a messenger of magic, and in exchange gained the power of magic. Beings charged with the task of combating witches.
- Soul Gem: A gem birthed from a contract with a messenger of magic. Proof that one is a magical girl; the source of their magical power. The Soul Gem is the source of a Magical Girl's magical power, produced upon contracting by extracting the contractee's soul and giving it physical form. When they use their magic, experience strong negative emotions, or sustain physical injuries, the Soul Gem gathers impurities and becomes "corrupted". When "corrupted", the gem loses its shine and becomes progressively darker. The only way to rid it of its darkness is to extract it with a Grief Seed or Grief Cube. Physical contact with the Soul Gem is required for a Magical Girl to transform. When not transformed, a Magical Girl's Soul Gem typically takes its default "egg" form, or may be turned into a ring at will to be worn for easier transportation. When in ring form, the band will display its owner's name written in Runes. When transformed, the gem will change appearance and become incorporated into its owner's costume. The gem's costumed form most often takes on the appearance of one of the two symbols, which may or may not be the same symbol repeated, on the top and bottom/center of the gem in its "egg" form (e.g. Mami Tomoe's becomes a flower, Rena Minami's becomes a music note, etc.). A Magical Girl is capable of using their Soul Gem to perform magic when not transformed: they can merge it with a normal object to temporarily imbue it with magic, which also transforms its appearance, which is then returned the normal when the Soul Gem is separated from it; and they can summon simplified forms of their weapons made of magical energy that extent from, and can be retracted into, the gem. A Magical Girl must remain within 100 meters of their Soul Gem or their connection will be broken, and the girl will instantly "die". If this connection is broken, it will only be re-established once physical contact between them has been made again. Once separated, a Magical Girl's body has approximately 48 hours until it begins to decay. While transformed, a Magical Girl may be separated from their Soul Gem and retain their life and magic provided the distance between them does not exceed 100 meters; however, if a Magical Girl is not already transformed and is separated from their gem while remaining within proper distance of it, they will be unable to transform and, potentially, unable to use their unique magic. The connection between a Magical Girl and their Soul Gem can be broken by another using magic while still within 100 meters of each other. If the Soul Gem becomes too full of impurities and turns completely black, it will transform into a Grief Seed, and its Magical Girl will become a Witch. This will completely sever the connection to the Magical Girl's body, unless the Magical Girl was already using a Doppel at the time and leaving the boundary of the Automatic Purification System. Soul Gems have a natural magic sense that allows Magical Girls to detect both generalized spikes in magic and specific magic signatures, both of Witches and of other Magical Girls. It is unknown what would happen if a Soul Gem separated from its owner's body becomes black in Kamihama City.
- Witch: The negative impulse that is called anxiety or suspicion, or excessive wrath or hatred = beings that spread the seeds of disaster across the world. Normally, they conceal themselves behind barriers. Episode 8 reveals that Witches are the final form of Magical Girls. When a girl's Soul Gem becomes too full of impurities and turns completely black, it transforms into a Grief Seed, and its Magical Girl becomes a Witch. Witches from the past seem to have nouns and nicknames for people as their names rather than traditionally feminine names. As revealed in Magia Record, witches are capable of, and can be made stronger by, consuming Grief Seeds and other witches. Witches will have a different name than their Magical Girl self, and they will always be written in Runes. A majority of these names will be human names, feminine, different than those of their former Magical Girl selves, and in a language other than Japanese (compared to most known Magical Girls being Japanese), but exceptions to all of these exist throughout the franchise. Most naming conventions established in each entry in the franchise were broken by Magia Record.
- Witch's Kiss: A mark that appears on a human targeted by a witch. A Witch's Kiss is a marking, the personal symbol of the Witch, used by a Witch and its Familiars to control the minds of humans. They can be used to exacerbate pre-existing negative emotions and thoughts, change personalities, make people commit crimes or suicide, or lure them into a Labyrinth to be consumed by the Witch inside. While some of these actions may not necessarily lead humans to being consumed, some Witches may also desire merely to spread evil and misfortune regardless of if they get sustenance. Further, a Kissed human may not always die from it. Familiars can Kiss humans well outside of the Labyrinth they hail from in order to bring them to their Witch. In the original series, Witch's Kisses were only depicted as appearing on people's necks. In Magia Record, they are now shown to appear on any part of the body, including the face and limbs. In the original series and Magia Record, it is shown that humans with magical potential (future Magical Girls) can still become Kissed. It is unconfirmed, though implied in Rebellion, that even contracted Magical Girls can also be Kissed. The symbol that makes up a Witch's Kiss also appears at the entrance of its owner's Labyrinth.
- Wraith: Wraiths are manifestations of grief in the new world recreated by Madoka Kaname. They replace the witches that magical girls must fight. They resemble tall, statue-like men wearing robes with no visible limbs (though concept art shows them as having hands that shoot thin lasers to attack). Their faces are partially covered by digital polygon-like shapes that appear to glitch out randomly on or around their being.
Misconceptions
Ultimate Madoka Doesn't have a Soul Gem
Official Merchandise has an ultimate Madoka soul gem merchandise, along with her official design having her soul gem below her throat.
Witches Don't Have Souls
Witches do not lack souls, this comes from a misunderstanding when a magical girl's soul gem becomes completely corrupted, their soul gets destroyed, because it looks like their soul gem gets destroyed, but their soul gems just transform into grief seeds. They still have a soul.
Every Madoka was erased at the end of Puella Magi Madoka Magic When She Became Ultimate Madoka
Ultimate Madoka isn't every Madoka in existence being erased, other Madoka's still exist, along with a side story in Magia Record having Ultimate Madoka viewing a timeline that has her alternate self. So she is not a multiversal singularity, only a singularity within her universe.
Statistics Related Misconceptions
Multiversal Madoka Kaname
The idea comes from the idea that Madoka "Completely reformed the multiverse, which is stated to be made of infinite universes, from destroying the concept of Witches in every universe, past and future. Ascended to a higher level of existence to become a conceptual entity as the Law of Cycles itself, which encompasses the multiverse as well as the nonexistent multiverse beyond it."
However, there is much context behind all of this. Madoka did not destroy or erase the concept of Witches, what she did was go to each point in time and stop a magical girl from becoming a witch. She "erases the concept" in the fact that the concept could never be explored as no one ever turns into a witch since Madoka is always stopping magical girls from becoming witches, essentially imagine one committing mass genocide on an entire race of people, destroying all of their history, culture, etcetera. This would make it so that no one remembers that species, and essentially "erased the concept" of that species. It's also been directly noted that witches can still exist. https://wiki.puella-magi.net/The_Rebellion_Story/Q%26A
"Q: How is it possible that Homura turns into a witch?
A: Remember Madoka's wish was to take away the curse before each Mahou Shoujo gets consumed by it and turns into a witch. That prevents the process of turning into one, and thus also elimates the existence of witches. In other words, it is still possible to turn into a witch, but it has not happened, or been observed, because Godoka interferes before it happening. Thus no one knows about it, except for Homura and QB. QB only knows about it because Homura vaguely remembers it from the previous world, and told QB about it at the end of the tv series."
There's another interview also that directly shows Madoka wasn't really affecting the whole universe or world in its entirety, just anything to do with the Maho Shojo: https://wiki.puella-magi.net/Madoka_Magica_Episode_12:_My_Very_Best_Friend "Next, Yuuki asks about Madoka's wish: do they think that it's 'correct'? Urobuchi says that he can't say it's not right; it's quite something for a middle school girl. Aoki says that Madoka was able to really gather a lot of experiences together before making her decision.
Urobuchi then cuts in saying that he really wanted to have that scene where Mami gives Madoka her sketches back.
Miyamoto really liked her wish. She really isn't saving the whole universe or the world, just the mahou shoujo. Yuuki thought that without Homura, they couldn't have had this wish.
Urobuchi then talked about the scene with Madoka saving all the girls. "Was it okay to do something this flashy?" Saitou then says that before this she hadn't considered that there were magical girls all over the world. Urobuchi says "Kyubey is world-wide."
It's amazing though, she's saving every magical girl not just around the world but the past and the future. Madoka really has a lot of work to do!"
"Urobuchi states in the commentary that Madoka erased the existence of Witches but did not erase curses themselves."
Multiversal Kriemhild Gretchen
The idea comes from it being stronger than the peak of the Avatar of Calamity. As she's implied to be made of all the curses, which would include also the Avatar of Calamity
This scan isn't from the official translation, here is the page of the official translation, it notes that the Avatar of Calamity would bring an end of the world and notes the Wraith World will soon end the way as the old world did, as the old world is not the Multiverse being destroyed, it is not talking about anything Multiversal here. This is talking about how the wraith world is going to be a world filled with grief and despair again, like how the witch world was and what Wals did to the world in the witch timeline.
Mistranslations
Homura and Madoka's Wish Transcends the Laws of The World
Transcended the laws of the world.
This scan is from a fan translation, the official translation instead notes Maodka and Homura overcame the laws of the world, and what this contextually is talking about is the full context here, that Madoka and Homura's desire with each other created a miracle that overcame the laws of the world, not that Homura herself transcends the laws of the world.
Explanations
Verse Scaling
The verse lists an official tiering system for how strong each magical girl is. Their categories range from Offensive Power, Defensive Power, Speed, Additional Learned Powers, Initial Magical Usability, and Magical Stamina. Though it should be noted even with these stats, magical girls are still roughly comparable to each other, for example, magical girls like Homura Akemi with a 0 offense stat can overpower and knock out magical girls like Sayaka Miki with a 1.5 offense stat.
