Madoka in the Anime
Wraith Arc
A mutant wraith disguises itself in Madoka's form and helps to assist Homura throughout the story, even going so far as to join in the battle against the mutant wraiths. Rebellion
However, Madoka is aware of Kyubey's plan. She enters Homura's barrier with Sayaka and Nagisa Momoe (the magical girl who became Charlotte). Sayaka and Nagisa are now part of the Law of Cycles and are capable of invoking the power of their witch forms (since their witches were also absorbed by the Law of Cycles before they were born.) Madoka entrusts them with her memories and powers in order to fool Kyubey, and allows Homura's barrier to alter her memories and suppress her powers. Within Homura's barrier, Madoka believes that she is an ordinary magical girl. She is reunited with her family, who were also taken into Homura's barrier and had their memories altered. Along with Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami, and Bebe (a disguised Nagisa), Madoka fights Nightmares, monsters created by Homura's barrier. Kyubey recognizes Madoka as the Law of Cycles but is unable to determine the nature of her powers. He decides to stay close to Madoka, pretending to be a harmless animal-like helper. Eventually Homura appears in her barrier and joins the other magical girls. Homura is unaware that she is a witch, but she soon realizes that she's in a witch barrier and resolves to discover the truth. Homura's journey brings her into contact and conflict with the other magical girls. Madoka comes to Homura and offers to listen to her problems. Homura tries to tell Madoka about her fate at the end of the anime, framing it as a dream she had. Madoka tells Homura that it sounds like a bad dream, and reassures Homura that she would never want to go away to a place where she can't see anyone again. Homura then believes that Madoka isn't happy being the Law of Cycles(or isn't as happy as she could be), and exclaims that she have stopped Madoka from sacrificing herself. Homura then decides to believe that Madoka is real (having wondered if Madoka was an illusion), and begins to realize that she herself is the witch. Ultimately, Homura learns about Kyubey's plot, and decides to foil it by dying in her barrier. Homura transforms into her witch form, Homulilly, and marches to her death. Fortunately, Sayaka and Nagisa have explained everything to the other magical girls, and they have a plan to save Homura. Sayaka summons her witch self Oktavia and an army of familiars. Madoka and Nagisa use their magic to attack the ceiling of Homulilly's barrier, while the other magical girls, the summoned familiars, and Oktavia hold off Homulilly and her army of familiars. Ultimately, Madoka destroys the ceiling of the barrier, revealing Kyubey's Isolation Field. Madoka then reaches out Homura's humanity and the two girls combine their powers to destroy the Isolation Field from the inside, completely foiling Kyubey's plan. With the Isolation Field destroys, all the magical girls reappear in the real world. Sayaka and Nagisa return Madoka's memories and powers to her and she transforms into Ultimate Madoka. However, Madoka is still in a human form (which means she lacks omniscience and can be seen by others). As she comes down to take Homura's Soul Gem into the Law of Cycles, Homura grabs Madoka's hands before her Soul Gem can be purified. Homura's Soul Gem turns black, and then fills with a new color. (It's unclear if this color was something that had already existed in Homura's Soul Gem, or if it is the result of Homura grabbing Madoka and interfering with the Law of Cycles). Homura's actions causes reality to crack. Madoka is then separated from Ultimate Madoka (it is unclear if Homura deliberately caused this, or if it is the result of Homura's interference). The colors inside Homura's Soul Gem explode outward. The cracks perpetuate throughout reality, followed by the colors of Homura's Soul Gem, which engulfs the universe. Homura has now become a new existence, which she defines as a demon. She explains that she took a piece of the Law of Cycles, which corresponds to Madoka's existence as a person before she became the Law of Cycles. Homura creates a new world where the magical girls can be alive and happy, although she alters their memories to fit with the new world. In this new reality, Madoka believes she has spent three years in America with her family, and they have just moved back to Japan. Madoka transfers into her class from the original reality, reversing her role with Homura's. Homura introduces herself to Madoka and offers to show her around the school. As they walk together, Homura asks Madoka how she feels returning to her hometown. Madoka says it feels familiar, but something feels different. As the keep walking, Madoka realizes that the thing that feels different is herself. Her eyes glow gold, her yellow hair ribbons untie themselves, and reality changes. Homura grabs onto Madoka and says that Madoka is her true self right now, returning Madoka and reality to normal. Homura asks Madoka if she thinks the world is precious, and if she thinks either laws or desires are more important. Madoka thinks that law is more important, saying that selfishly breaking the law is a bad thing. Homura takes off the hair ribbon she received from Madoka and says that she and Madoka might become enemies someday. She ties the ribbon into Madoka's hair, saying that she doesn't care about being Madoka's enemy as she just wants a world where Madoka can be happy. In one of the final scenes of the movie, Madoka is shown happily unpacking boxes with her family. Drama CDs
In the Drama CD 2"Sunny Day Life" Madoka used to get good grades, but her duties as a magical girl are interfering with her studies. For what is worth, Madoka's grades are still better than Sayaka's. The Different Story
Madoka is worried about Sayaka, and always thinks how to help her. She tells Kyousuke about how his wrist was healed with Sayaka's wish. This doesn't help Sayaka in the end, however. Madoka makes her wish to revive Sayaka and becomes a magical girl at the very end of this story, this causes Homura to give up on this timeline. Madoka doesn't know the truth about the magical girl system. She thinks Sayaka was killed by witches because Homura told her so. Madoka meets Kyoko after being helped by her and Homura. They become friends secretly and tell each other about another side of Sayaka and Mami. Kazumi Magica
Oriko Magica
She appears in Chapter 4 for one page. She is shown with her friends Homura, Sayaka and Hitomi going out for snacks after school. In chapters 5 through 7, Mitakihara Junior High is attacked by Oriko and Kirika. Oriko speaks to the school through the school's broadcast system, and seems to give a threatening look to Madoka as she claims she will defeat a creature of ultimate despair that will descend upon them. As a witch's barrier forms over the school, Madoka is separated from her friends attacked by familiars. Homura saves her in time, but Madoka demands to know why she does not help the other students. Homura knows she cannot save everyone, and wanted to try to save Madoka anyway. Madoka apologizes as Homura puts her in a protective barrier so familiars cannot attack her and leaves to defeat the perpetrators. Madoka escapes from the protective barrier created by Homura and tries to help Homura with Sayaka and Hitomi. Madoka was Oriko's real target. The white magical girl wanted to kill her before she could contract and become a magical girl herself, and then the most powerful witch ever. She is killed by Oriko at the very end. Oriko uses a shard of Kirika's witch body to impale Madoka through the torso. Once Oriko dies and the witch barrier is lifted, Hitomi and Sayaka are seen mourning for Madoka. In the final chapter of Sadness Prayer, Madoka appears in her goddess form before Oriko and Kirika after both of them die at the end of the manga. Tart Magica

Original Anime
In the second timeline, her formation involves thunderclouds coalescing initially into a giant humanoid and then she seems to form a mountain-like being. In the fourth timeline, she is shown as a giant creature, actually the size of a mountain. Her name was not shown at all during initial broadcast, but was added in the fourth timeline in a webcast version one week later. According to Kyubey, strength of this incarnation of hers is of such a magnitude that she could obliterate the planet within ten days. Her appearance in both timelines is essentially identical (if one looks closely at her fourth timeline appearance, they will see the head at the top of the shadow between the outstretched arms), though in the second timeline only her head was really shown at all, with the body still forming. In episode 12, Madoka's all-powerful witch form appears at the end of the universe, born from all the grief Madoka had shouldered from the magical girls she had saved, due to her supremely hopeful wish. She inhabits a comet-sized grief seed and, unlike the second and fourth timelines versions of Kriemhild, has a fully-shown face (although the left half is either blank or covered in shadow); her head is sun disc-shaped, her open mouth resembles the moon, and her right eye resembles the earth. She is slain by Ultimate Madoka before she can consume the earth. Magia Record
The Doppel of Mercy. Her form is that of salvation. This Doppel is a replica of mercy. The owner of these feelings dreams of saving everyone and everything inside the Doppel. This Doppel, which has powers similar to that of a god's, will probably level the earth and reduce it all to dust.

Once it is summoned, it creates an existence within with all things around it are consumed, and then takes control of everything within that existence. After that, it floats higher into the air and a shower of light arrows rains down. While all of this is happening, the master of this emotion sleeps inside the huge Soul Gem.
The Doppel of mercy. Its form is a New Year’s Tidings. The master of this emotion is filled with aspirations for the new year from inside her Doppel, which gathers all wishes for the year the moment if manifests and bestows them upon its enemy in the form of blessings of mercy. Any and all life that has thrived on this earth over the millennia of its existence are sure to be equally condensed and crushed by the enormity of this fleeting creature's wish.
The Doppel of mercy. Its form is expulsion. The master of this emotion is identified as a foreign substance by her Doppel, and is mercilessly ejected from it. Having been separated from the representation of her emotions, only memories linger in its former master’s mind. But as she relishes those memories, they exude a new wave of emotion– and its charmingly quirky voice will surely mow down every enemy that she can see down below.
The Doppel of mercy. Its form is salvation. The master of this emotion is en route to a summer resort, her heart aflutter at the thought of all the rare experiences that one can only enjoy during this brief window. This has affected her Doppel’s appearance as well, but because its master struggles to visualize what the resort will actually be like, the Doppel’s body has transformed into a serving of special fruit ice cream. Everything in the vicinity that this Doppel absorbs will be bathed fairly and evenly in cold syrup and fruit. Though they experience freezing cold as a result, it’s said that enduring the cold will lead to both salvation, and the ability to exalt the glories of any summer one could have. Throughout this, the emotion’s |

Witch of salvation. Her nature is mercy. She absorbs any life on the planet into her newly created heaven--her barrier. The only way to defeat this witch is to make the world free of misfortune. If there's no grief in this world, she will believe this world is already a heaven.
The Witch of Despair. Her nature is direct petition. The mouthpiece for all the unfulfilled hopes of all spent magical girls. If a hope is born that can rewrite the universe, then at the same time, it is born from the mud of despair. Everlasting wailing fills her body, a continuously swelling, empty doll. At the end of a magical girl’s karma, this witch continues to swell to absurd sizes. And in the end, her body could even destroy the galaxy.
The Minion of the Witch of Salvation. Their task is measurement. They can expose the impurities of the hearts of those who go to Heaven by weighing the sins placed on their scales. The sinful are perhaps granted even more profound mercy from the witch.
Other
Standard Tactics:
- Regular: Madoka will use strategies of dodging and shooting her energy arrows.
- Ultimate Madoka: Ultimate Madoka has not been directly shown to fight asides from the one time when she destroyed her own witch, along with going throughout space-time to stop other witches, thus she is a wildcard.
Weaknesses
- Standard Magical Girl Weaknesses: Magical Girls lose control of their avatars if their soul gems are 100 meters away from their bodies[200]. If a Magical Girl blocks out the pain, their reaction time gets slowed by a bit[201]. The more a magical girl uses magic, the more their soul gem becomes packed with impurities, making them unable to exert the full magic power[202]. If the Magical Girls abuse their Doppels too much, they will fuse to them and become corrupted[203].
- Unique Weaknesses: Madoka's kindness is both her greatest strength and weakness, refusing to accept the idea of magical girls fighting other magical girls no matter what actions they did, leading to her causing problems such as throwing Sayaka Miki's soul gem on a truck, nearly killing Sayaka if Homura Akemi didn't go to retrieve it.
- Ultimate Madoka Weaknesses: As Ultimate Madoka, none of these weaknesses truly apply to her anymore, however if her memory is erased she will lose her powers as Ultimate Madoka, reverting back to her regular self[204]. Ultimate Madoka also cannot interact with reality, only being able to enter it when a magical girl becomes a witch to stop them from turning into one[205].
Standard Tactics: Kriemhild Gretchen attempts to destroy all life on Earth. | Ultimate Kriemhild Gretchen has the same strategy, though it's despair is increasing so it can eventually expand and destroy all life in the universe. | It uses its tentacles to automatically home in on all life, killing everyone.
Weaknesses: Nothing notable.
Note
- Despite how it may seem, Ultimate Madoka did not erase Madoka from every single universe, only the universe of the anime, as Madoka's still exist in other universes.
- Madoka never erased the concept of witches, this is a misunderstanding of the scene, what Madoka did was go through every point in space-time and purify Magical Girls before they became witches, bringing them to the law of cycles. Madoka also did not rewrite the entire multiverse, as shown in the previous note, other Madoka's still exist and she only directly affected her universe.
Trivia
- Madoka owns many stuffed animals in her room.
- One of Madoka's stuffed animals resembles Lady from Disney's movie "Lady and the Tramp".
- Madoka loves cats like Homura.
- According with Urobuchi, he made Junko a strong woman so Madoka would want to emulate her strength and courage.
- Madoka's last form is known as Ultimate Madoka. Prior to this information, fans called her form "MadoKami", Godoka, or Goddess Madoka.
- In one of the original artwork designs, it is noted that Madoka is holding a shinai sword or a bow.
- Wehihihi ♥ "ウェヒヒヒヒ" is an onomatopoeia for Madoka's trademark laughter. You can hear it here. (Or here.)
- Gen Urobuchi tweeted that he chose October 3 as Madoka's birthday, because that was the day when the ‘Mahou Shoujo Apocalypse Madoka☆Magica Project’ document was created[1].
- The project was developed under the working title "Mahō Shōjo Mokushiroku Madoka☆Magica", ("Magical Girl Revelation Madoka☆Magica" or "Maho Shojo Apocalypse Madoka☆Magica"), a reference to the Bible.
- 黙示録 specifically refers to the Book of Revelation.
- The project was developed under the working title "Mahō Shōjo Mokushiroku Madoka☆Magica", ("Magical Girl Revelation Madoka☆Magica" or "Maho Shojo Apocalypse Madoka☆Magica"), a reference to the Bible.
- There is a petition to change the official name of the NGC 6357 nebula to the "Madokami nebula".
- As an adult, she looks similar to her Ultimate Madoka form, though without the pigtails.
- Up until Magia Record, Madoka is the only one without a transformation sequence as a magical girl within the anime series; however during the anime's opening scenes, she does appear in a transformation sequence.
- It is suggested that the reason Madoka is so miserable is that she wishes for power in order to be selfless so that she won't be miserable any more. Kyubey uses this to manipulate Madoka's thinking into making her wish through her guilt. He tries to manipulate Madoka into a belief that she can be free from her misery by making a selfless wish.
- Without the wish and the life experience as a magical girl, Madoka's character never grows and develops into a courageous heroine. However, her life experience as a scared teenage girl, constantly crying and mourning the death of so many, always wanting to do what's right yet feeling powerless, the failure of attempting to save friends and strangers, and the sorrow she feels for the victims of innocent girls deceived by a calculating cold alien allows Madoka to finally develop the courage to confront her fears to save Homura and the world, instead of succumbing to despair and running away. In other words Madoka finally grows up. The scene with her mother in Episode 11 leaves that impression.
- It is speculated that any wish Madoka ever made would be twisted because of the nature of the wish, according with Episode 11. Kyubey suspects that as long as the motives are selfish, the wish will always be twisted because the wishers' desire would always fail to meet their expectation.
- Madoka may have realized that as long as her thinking was selfish or incorrect, then her wish would also be twisted. It is suspected that Madoka contemplates what to do to save Homura and her town in Episode 11, without being caught into the snare of the wish's trap. It is suspected that Madoka goes from wanting to be selfless for selfish reasons to wanting to be selfless for selflessness itself. By removing Madoka's selfish desire from her wish, she literally removes her self and her physical presence as a consequence.
- A philosophical analysis tries to determine Madoka's motive here.

It is suspected that Madoka goes from wanting to be selfless for selfish reasons to wanting to be selfless for selflessness itself. - An argument can be said that Madoka has two ways to develop her courage. One is through Kyubey by magic (which is the easiest path); the other way is more difficult and hurtful, the painful life experience and lessons she receives through friends, family members, and from strangers. But the most influential character in Madoka's life would be her mother; her source of wisdom, courage, and strength.
- The characters of her last name mean "deer" (鹿) and "eye"(目), respectively.
- Her last name can also be used as a first name.
- Her last name sounds the same as (要), a word which means "keystone" or "hub".
- Madoka could also mean "wish" or "ambition" or "flower".
- The name Madoka can be written with the character for "circle" or "round" in kanji (円) reflecting the cyclical nature of the magical girl-witch incubator relationship as well as the circular repetition of timelines that revolve around her. It could also be written with the character for "wish" or "ambition"; the connotations of that should be obvious. Her last name, Kaname, can also be read as "pivot" or "vital point", which is apt to say the least due to Homura's time-meddling making Madoka's existence the pivotal point of every timeline she creates.

- According to witch animator and designer InuCurry, Walpurgis Night's and Kriemhild Gretchen's silhouettes are supposed to make a pair
- Puella Magi Production Note further reveals that Kriemhild Gretchen is meant to look like the lower half of a sand timer, while Walpurgis Night looks like the upper half. Interestingly, Homura's shield has also been described as a sand timer
- In Madoka Magica Portable, in addition to her ribbon, Kriemhild Gretchen's grief seed is shown with black wings in the Kyoko route. It's also shown with black wings for the witch kiss available in the PSP custom themes available with the limited edition version of the game. Art from Inu Curry's special gallery game bonus reveals another depiction of the grief seed and the interior of the Kriemhild Gretchen, otherwise known as the Witch of Salvation
- Her Doppel form in Magia Record is based off concept art by InuCurry for Madoka Magica Portable. In that game, it was noted to be in the center of the witch and is perhaps her true form.
- In Episode 1, shortly after the runic text reading "Prologue in Heaven", we see the upside-down form of a giant shadow above Walpurgis Night's spell circle (the symbols seen behind Walpurgis Night). Based off her appearance and her desire to create "heaven", it can only be concluded that this shadow is Kriemhild Gretchen
- Kriemhild can only be defeated if the world is rid of all misfortune within the ten days it will take for her to destroy it. This could mean that the only feasible way of defeating her is by having a girl become a magical girl with the wish to rid the world of misfortune (or, alternately, to just kill Kriemhild outright -- which would probably make the new magical girl a witch even more powerful than Kriemhild herself)
- Since she rids the world of misfortune herself in given time that means the witch might just die out once her job is done and all the Incubators would have to do is pick up her huge grief seed afterwards
- It's probable that when Kyubey says Kriemhild will "destroy the planet" he simply means that Kriemhild's barrier will grow to encompass it or that she will wipe out all life on it in favor of her dream world barrier. In the event the latter were the case, Kriemheld could be likened to the biblical Apocalypse. All sinners (misfortune) are destroyed before paradise itself (the witch's barrier) settles on Earth for those still alive
- Kriemhild's Grief Seed has a symbol that resembles a shooting star. Shooting stars are associated with wishes
- In Goethe's Faust, Gretchen, also known as Margarete, was the name of Faust's lover. She dies at the end of Part 1 of Faust, but returns at the end of Part 2 as a Pentinent in heaven. She is allowed to lead Faust's soul into heaven's higher spheres
- Some studies suggest that Faust refers to the girl as Margarete (meaning pearl) at the beginning because of her purity and innocence, and changes to the diminutive Gretchen after their intercourse, to point out her spoiled purity. In the same way, the fact that this witch is named Gretchen, rather than Margarete, could represent the corruption of Madoka's soul
- Kriemhild, also known as Gudrun, is a figure from Norse Mythology. She is an important character in the epic poem Nibelungenlied. Note also that Kriemhild comes from the German words for "mask" and "battle".
- Some have come to believe that the mask shown at the end of the ending credits is actually Kriemhild's face, considering "Kriemhild"'s meaning of "battle mask"
- In the Madoka Magica Online game an accessory named "Faust's Masked" (ファソトマスク) appeared for a limited time. The mask is halved, like Ultimate Kremhild's, and can be equipped to any Magical Girl's face
- Kriemhild Gretchen's appearance as a giant shadow may be based off the phenomenon known as a Brocken spectre. In both German folklore and Goethe's Faust, Walpurgis Night occurred on the Brocken, a mountain peak in Germany. The conditions on the Brocken often cause Brocken spectres, which are magnified shadows of climbers being projected onto mist or clouds. Kriemhild Gretchen appears after the witch known as Walpurgis Night is defeated. If this is true, it's also possible that Kriemhild is not as large as she appears
- Meine Göttin ("My Goddess"), also a poem written by Goethe on 15 September 1780 and sent at once to Charlotte von Stein. It was first published in 1789 in Goethes Schriften. Written in hymnic form, the poem is a panegyric of the poetic imagination
