Introuction
Shielding is the ability to block or deflect projectiles and attacks using shields or similar protective constructs. These shields can be physical objects, spiritual constructs, or magically created defenses. While similar in purpose to Forcefield Manipulation, Shielding relies on distinct, discrete protective tools or constructs rather than generating widespread barriers of energy or magic.
Applications
- Projectile Blocking: The ability to intercept or block physical or energy-based projectiles using a shield or similar construct.
- Energy Deflection: Redirecting or reflecting energy attacks using the surface of the shield.
- Targeted Protection: Shields protect a specific target, such as an individual or object, rather than providing a broad-area defense.
- Temporary Defense: Shields may appear for limited periods, such as during attacks or critical moments.
Comparison to Forcefield Manipulation
While both Shielding and Forcefield Manipulation share defensive capabilities:
- Shielding involves the use of discrete, defined shields, whether physical, spiritual, or magical, to block attacks.
- Forcefield Manipulation creates broader, energy-based, or magical barriers that can encompass areas or protect multiple targets.
The distinction lies in Shielding's reliance on localized, targeted defenses versus the widespread nature of forcefields.
Examples
- Bat Umbrella (Kid Dracula): A shield-like construct that deflects energy projectiles.
- Undyne's Shield (Undertale): A magical shield provided to protect another’s soul during combat.
Limitations
- Coverage Area: Protection is limited to the shield’s size or area of effect, leaving other areas exposed.
- Durability: Shields may weaken or break after repeated use or powerful attacks.
- Activation Dependency: Shields may require activation or summoning, leaving the user vulnerable if unprepared.
- Special Attacks: Certain attacks, such as intangible, phased, or overwhelming strikes, may bypass or break through shields.
