| Joe is an orphaned, half-Japanese 18 year old who was captured by the crime organization, Black Ghost. There, he was experimented on by the chief scientists and was converted into a Cyborg, with the intents of using Joe, as one of nine prototypes, in order to create their own race of Cyborg Soldiers. However, Joe and the other prototypes were able to escape with the help of Doctor Gilmore, a scientist who was tricked into helping Black Ghost. Joe Shimamura, labeled as 009, would fight alongside eight other of his Cyborg "siblings" against Black Ghost and any other organization which may threaten peace on the Earth.

Background
Arus, more well known by his title Erdrick, is the main protagonist of the Square Enix-published game, Dragon Quest III, which originally debuted on the NES before being remade for the SNES. Among the protagonists of Dragon Quest, Arus is perhaps the most well known, as Dragon Quest III was an incredibly inspirational game in terms of story, design and gameplay for JRPGs during the days of the NES, as many of the mechanics and story beats used in modern RPGs were effectively created, or at least inspired from the game. Due to its massive success, Arus is sometimes seen as the face of the Dragon Quest series, if not the main hero. This holds true in the series itself, as Arus's actions have ultimately inspired many other heroes who also took up the mantle of Erdrick.
Born as the son of the great hero Ortega, Arus was born into a rather unfortunate time period. The demonic Archfiend Baramos was terrorizing much of the Earth, and Arus's father was tasked to track down and kill the monster. Ortega traveled to a far-away volcano, but during a great battle disappeared and was presumed dead. Once Ortega's disappearance was heard of, the burden of slaying Baramos was passed down to his remaining son, being Arus. For sixteen long years, Arus trained in his hometown of Aliahan.
