Flash generating speed to travel through time
Flash generating speed to travel through time

Speed

Speed is the rate at which someone or something is able to move or operate. Speed is separated into the following categories:

Attack Speed

The speed at which an attack moves. For example, X character is hypersonic, but he can do an attack that is a natural beam of light, the speed for the attack is different from the speed of the user, hence the attack would be lightspeed even if its user isn't.

Combat Speed

The speed at which a character can fight. This does not relate in any way to travel speed, for example, Steven Universe in travel speed is only subsonic, however, he's Relativistic in combat speed.

Reaction Speed

Reaction speed is the speed at which a character can react to an event or action. This usually only grants a short movement upon reaction, whereas several movements at the same speed switch it to combat speed. For example, characters from Avatar the Last Airbender can react to lightning attacks.

Travel Speed

The speed at which a character or object can move by running, or through similar means that do not involve flight or teleportation.

Flight Speed

The speed at which a character or object flies a certain distance, like going from the earth to the sun for example.

Conversion

You can use this calculator to convert from one speed unit to another.

Faster Than Light Scale

Once we surpass light we are going beyond standard conventional physics. According to physics, it is not possible to accelerate to the speed of light in reality without producing infinite energy, whereas even swifter velocities produce imaginary numbers. With this in mind, fiction very clearly ignores this on several occasions with characters moving beyond light speed still having finite values of energy. This contains the widest speed tiers, from FTL to Massively FTL+, stretching all the way through every finite speed value that is greater than the speed of light. Kinetic Energy does not apply to characters with any degree of FTL speed due to the KE formula being based off speeds below the speed of light. For information regarding actions such as real light view our light dodging feats page.

Names xSpeed of Light Explanation
FTL 1x - 1.4e+8 The end border is the distance to travel the solar system in one second, rounded to 1.4e+8.
FTL+ 1.4e+8 - 8.01e+13 The end border is the distance to travel the galaxy in one second, rounded to 8.01e+13.
Massively FTL 8.01e+13 - 3.33564095198152059e+35+ The end border is the distance to move significant distances in one Planck time.
Massively FTL+ 3.33564095198152059e+35+ Planck time characters to any higher finite speed.

Incalculable levels

These are levels that are completely incalcuable and have to do with some form of movement surpassing standardized time as we know it.

Names Explanation
Instantaneous Speed Able to move anywhere indefinitely, infinitely, or instantly. Certain methods such as Teleportation, for example, would only count towards travel speed (Do note this is only in situations where teleportation is treated as truly instant and not speeds such as lightspeed). The character can also get this speed through moving in an infinitesimal amount of time.
Extra-Temporal Movement while time literally stands still or where time is meaningless/does not exist. Movement beyond timelines, movement between timelines, and movement beyond linear time itself. This is why the speed cannot be measured. Given that S = D/T, if T or D is undefined, the speed formula cannot be applied. This is the same reason why moving between or beyond multiple temporal dimensions may also grant Extra-Temporal speed.
Inapplicable Characters who are conceptually beyond and qualitatively superior to all forms of space-time themselves and/or the concept of dimensions in general. This also includes characters who are capable of existing in a plane where the concept of speed (distance & time) itself has no relevance to them.

Other Abilities Similar to Speed

Teleportation (Teleportation is the ability to move instantly from one place to another without physically occupying the space between the two. It can often be a form of spatial manipulation or magic. In some situations, this allows one to move not only in space, but also in time, between dimensions, parallel worlds, and metaphysical planes)

Omnipresence (This is specifically a state of being, rather than a type of speed, to be present everywhere at once, this includes being able to exist throughout Space-Time, exist in any form of consciousness (e.g. Mind), and all other types of realms imaginable. For practical comparisons, each case requires more detailed consideration.)

Additional terms

"+" symbol

The "+" symbol is used when the speed level has reached one with a + on the chart, unlike Attack Potency where it is calculated to be greater than the average (arithmetic mean) of the high end energy level and low end energy level of a particular tier.

Example: One gets a speed level of 1185 m/s gets Supersonic+.

At least

Should be used to denote the lower cap of a character, if the exact value is indeterminate. Usually listed for characters that have done a feat superbly casually.

At most

Should be used to denote the higher cap of a character, if the exact value is indeterminate. Usually listed for characters that have done a feat that is questionable compared to their other feats.

Likely

Should be used to list a hypothetical statistic for a character, but inconclusive due to lack of feats or viable power-scaling. Probability of said hypothetical statistic should be favourable.

Possibly

Should be used to list a hypothetical statistic for a character, but inconclusive due to lack of feats or viable power-scaling. Probability of said hypothetical statistic should also be indeterminate.

Notes

Note 1:

The speed tiers used have intersecting limits, and this may be confusing to some members. The divisions are made based on Exclusive Form grouping, in which the true lower limit is the given lower limit and the true upper limit is just short of the given upper limit.

Examples:

1) Mach 10 is High Hypersonic, not Hypersonic+.

2) Mach 5 is Hypersonic, not Supersonic+.

Note 2:

Kindly note that Massively FTL+ is a very broad category which starts at 1000x Speed of Light (SoL) up to any higher finite number. As such, Massively FTL+ characters need not be even remotely on a similar level of speed. In fact, the difference may be as great as the magnitude of the difference between Massively FTL and regular human level.

In conclusion, one Massively FTL+ character can speed blitz another Massively FTL+ character, and assuming otherwise without a logical reason is fallacious.

Note 3:

A commonly misused form of rating a person at FTL is using a feat where they're moving over a parallax scroll of stars. These are very invalid form of feats due to the reason for star crossing existing. The reason for star crossing's existence is that there's a problem portraying motion in space. Moving in sublight speed, even if you're going insanely fast by Earth standards, you're going to look like you're standing still judging by the distant starfield and even relatively close planets. So the author needs a way to convey motion. Another issue that can be pointed out is usually in these feats how close the stars are to each other as you're closing over them, implying either these aren't real stars or they're still really far away meaning you aren't doing any form of interstellar travel. Another common problem with these feats is that going around the circumference of the earth would net you similar background aesthetics. For more information regarding this read these few articles.

Note 4:

Omnipresence is not speed but a state of being. There is no distance, time nor movement as the person is already there because they were always there.

Omnipresence, for example, a being that is almost everywhere In addition, if a certain character is omnipresent on a universal scale, it does not make them Massively FTL+, Instantaneous or Extra-Temporal. Due to this, a character that is Omnipresent is not swifter than all non-omnipresent beings.

Although a being that is not only omnipresent throughout space, but also time, would also be able to react to every attack from a being with normal speed before the opponent would even begin to throw the attack. This is the case because such a being would be able to exist throughout all of time itself by experiencing both the past, present and future simultaneously at once while not being bound to the normal flow of time, not due to their speed.

Note 5:

Being able to move into a timeless void falls under our Timeless Void Standards.

Note 6:

Characters that are able to move backwards and forwards through time simultaneously by movement alone qualify for Extra-Temporal speed. Additionally, characters able to move through separate space-times through speed alone would also qualify for the speed.

The difference between Instantaneous and Extra-Temporal is that the former can go everywhere via movement speed alone instantly or in an infinitesimal amount of time, whereas the latter can move everywhere and everywhen with their movement speed simultaneously.

Note 7:

Infinitesimal is a number so low that it is below all real numbers but still not zero. To understand how low this is, the lowest recorded number in the universe is a Planck's Time which is roughly 10^−43 seconds. For times less than one Planck time apart, one can neither measure nor detect any change. It is therefore physically impossible, with current technology, to determine if any action exists that causes a reaction in "an instant", rather than a reaction occurring after an interval of time too short to observe or measure. Take note that even in our reactions page, Massively FTL+'s starting point is only 3.336 × 10^-12 seconds. With this in mind, infinitesimal is a number so small it is far below a Planck's Time, to the point that a Planck's Time would be relatively large compared to it. Due to this, moving in an infinitesimal amount of time is not measured under Massively FTL+ speed as it's a number below even real numbers and cannot truly be measured to argue it such. It is also constantly attributed to an instant in most real life studies.

Note 8:

Please don't use the following speed terms on our wiki: "Sub-Relativistic," "Sub-Relativistic+," "Infinite," and "Immeasurable" being the terms.

The former pair were deemed unreliable to use for a couple key reasons. Firstly, the "sub" part of both terms means beneath Relativistic speed. This can be potentially confusing to use as the term is typically associated with a velocity slower than the speed of light to which relativistic effects do not matter. This could technically apply to all preceding speed names as none of them are fast enough to experience significant relativistic effects, so that is partially why our wiki doesn't use these pair of terms. The other reason is the lack of any meaningful scientific classifications using the terms around the speed values usually proposed with them. They have been merged with the Massively Hypersonic and Massively Hypersonic+ values because of these issues.

"Infinite" and "Immeasurable" speed tend to cause confusion when different mediums use the term but not to the same definition as our wiki. Considering that our wiki handles the idea of the former "Infinite speed" differently from most others too, the term doesn't exactly fit how our current description works. It should be noted that Infinite speed has been renamed to Instantaneous speed while Immeasurable speed has been renamed to Extra-Temporal speed as these terms better fit how we currently treat these speed classifications.

Usage of these four terms on profiles is prohibited because of this, and it is heavily discouraged on threads to say them.
