“ | Long before time had a name, Ninjago was created by the First Spinjitzu Master, using the Four Weapons of Spinjitzu. The Scythe of Quakes, the Nunchucks of Lightning, the Shurikens of Ice and the Sword of Fire. Weapons so powerful, no one can handle all of their power at once! When he passed away, his two sons swore to protect them, but the oldest was consumed by darkness and wanted to possess them. A battle between brothers broke out, and the oldest was struck down and banished to the Underworld. Peace returned, and the younger brother hid the weapons, but knowing his older brother's relentless ambition for power, he placed a guardian to protect them. And for fear of his own demise, a map for an honest man to hide. That honest man was your father. The older brother is Lord Garmadon, and I... need to find those weapons before he does. | „ |
Background
Ninjago, formerly known as Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu is a computer-animated television show produced by The Lego Group. Created by Michael Hegner and Tommy Andreason, Ninjago has spanned multiple seasons, a feature-length film, video games and graphic novels. The series premiered on Cartoon Network on January 14th, 2011 with 4 pilot episodes and has been in production ever since.
The series follows a team of six brightly coloured ninja and their battles against the forces of evil to maintain balance in the world of Ninjago. The show centers on these six Elemental Masters, each possessing seperate elemental powers and lead by their elderly sensei, Master Wu. The Ninja consist of Kai, the hotheaded Master of Fire, Cole, the steadfast Master of Earth, Jay, the excitable Master of Lightning, Zane, the robotic Master of Ice, Nya, the mature Master of Water and Lloyd Garmadon, the legendary Green Ninja.
The Ninja are trained in a unique martial art known as 'Spinjitzu', the central fighting style shown in the series. The martial art involves rapidly spinning around, creating a tornado-like vortex of elemental energy to increase striking power and maneuverability.
The central story revolves around a prophecy regarding the Green Ninja, the Ninja destined to rise above the others and defeat the Dark Lord, also known as The Overlord. The Green Ninja is Lloyd Garmadon, son of the evil Lord Garmadon and youngest of the Ninja. He controls a mysterious green energy. Many events in Ninjago revolve around the Green Ninja title, such as searching for the fabled hero, the Ninja's struggles to train him, the team's mission to rescue him after his possession, and Lloyd's relationship with his own father.
The most recurring antagonist is Lord Garmadon, Wu's brother and The First Spinjitzu Master's firstborn son. Once a regular boy, Garmadon was bitten by The Great Devourer, a snake with a venom that could turn the purest of things wicked. Over many years, the venom corrupted Garmadon, but not before he could marry and father a son of his own. Tragically, it was around this time the Great Devourer's venom fully corrupted him and turned him evil against his will. Wanting to remake Ninjago in his own image, he tried to steal the legendary Golden Weapons, artefacts used by the First Spinjitzu Master to create Ninjago, and battled his brother over them. Defeated, Garmadon was struck down and banished into the Underworld, his body disfigured and his mind fully succumbed to evil.
Terms
- Spinjitzu: Spinjitzu is a close-combat martial art developed by The First Spinjitzu Master and passed down through generations. Fitting its name, Spinjitzu is the art of rotation. By spinning rapidly, the user summons a vortex-like tornado of energy around themselves. The technique adds force and momentum to blows. If the user has the mastery of an element, the vortex becomes made up of that elemental energy. The user of Spinjitzu can use the technique to boost their combat capibilities, change clothes rapidly, suck objects towards them, boost their speed and throw opponents around with ease. However, the technique is highly exhausting, with even the Ninja in peak physical condition can't maintain the art for more than around 15 seconds. The user can usually defeat any opponent fairly quickly while using Spinjitzu.
- Airjitzu: Developed by Sensei Yang, the lost martial art of Airjitzu is very similar to Spinjitzu, but also very different at the same time. While it has little use for combat, the user can tap into their innate elemental energy and spin rapidly, enveloping themselves in a pale vortex of energy, allowing them to temporarily take flight. It is highly useful for traversing the environment and making your way up tall structures. However, like with Spinjitzu, the user can only perform Airjitzu for one short burst, around 10 seconds in duration.
- Golden Weapons: The Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu are a set of extremely powerful weapons created by The First Spinjitzu Master in the molten steams of the Golden Peaks, used to create the landmass of Ninjago. The Golden Weapons consist of the Scythe of Quakes, Shurikens of Ice, Nunchucks of Lightning and Sword of Fire. Each possess the elemental essence of Creation and the Elemental Power of Earth, Ice, Lightning and Fire, respectively. Together, the weapons are so powerful that no-one outside of a select few individuals can handle all their power at once. The weapons have the potential to become anything in them, allowing the wielders to turn them into modern vehicles such as a plane or motorcycle. The Golden Weapons are also used to identify the Green Ninja, as they will react with green energy when the Chosen One is presented with all 4.
- True Potential: A Ninja's True Potential, also known as their Full Potential, is the highest level of elemental mastery they can achieve. Tapped into by overcoming the emotional obstacles inside them that are holding them. While in this state, the user's body glows, they are surrounded by the colour and energy of their element, and are free to control and manipulate their element to their will. It is a powerful force and almost unmatched by other methods, outside of The Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu. However, someone's True Potential must be maintained, and can be lost if it's not maintained.
- Realms: The Sixteem Realms are a series of inter-connected worlds that form the fabric of the Ninjago cosmology. Seperated and connected by a mysterious plane known as the Ethereal Divide. Like with everything, the Realms in Ninjago have a balance, and when one falls or is destroyed, their 'sister realm' also falls apart. The exact definition of the Realms are unclear, but it's most likely each Realm is a seperate universe. Despite this, artefacts such as the Realm Crystal and Traveler's Tea, or natural phenoma such as Dragons and several portals allow humans to traverse the realms of Ninjago. The Departed Realm is a special realm, as it can't be reached with the Realm Crystal. The Departed Realm is the afterlife, the place where all beings from all known realms 'depart' to after they die.
- Green Ninja: The Green Ninja, also known as The Chosen One is a legendary figure within the Ninjago world. The Green Ninja was said to be the strongest Ninja, destined to rise above the others and defeat The Dark Lord in a climactic battle. The prophecy has been around for thousands of years, since the days of The First Spinjitzu Master. Morro and Nya were both previously thought to be the Green Ninja, but the true Green Ninja turned out to be the young Lloyd Garmadon.
Power of the Verse
The verse has fairly powerful characters reaching City level and Relativistic+ speeds, mainly due to characters scaling to feats such as the Ninja surviving attacks from Morro and scaling from people such as Nya and Nadakhan deflecting or dodging lasers. The verse becomes even more powerful with characters such as The First Spinjitzu Master, who created the continent of Ninjago and split it in two, reaching Small Planet level, although their speed doesn't seem to be upgraded much. The verse also has a number of powerful hax, such as Time Manipulation, Creation, Shapeshifting and Resurrection.
Canon
The Ninjago canon, with its numerous shorts and side-stories, can be kind of confusing. The show is the primary canon and the final word on the canon for the show. If an outside source contradicts the show, the logic the show presents should be taken into account. While some shorts such as Wu's Teas and teh Chen mini-movies aren't canon, other shorts and books should be canon unless they contradict the show. As such, the canon timeline of the show is:
