Demon Slayer

Background

Demon Slayer, known as Kimetsu no Yaiba in Japanese, is a manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. It first began its serialization on Feburary 15th, 2016, and was finished on May 18th, 2020. The series later received an ongoing anime adaptation, which began its run on April 6th, 2019.

Demon Slayer is a story following a young boy named Tanjiro Kamado, who experienced the death of his family at the hands of a demon. With the only survivng member of his family, Nezuko Kamado, having been turned into a demon herself, Tanjiro was inspired to take up the blade and find a way to turn her back. This started his journey towards becoming a Demon Slayer.

Along this journey, Tanjiro learns special techniques known as Breathing Styles, which bolstered his fighting ability. In particular, Tanjiro became specialized in Water and Sun Breathing, which allowed for him to combat some of the most powerful demons out there. This included Muzan Kibutsuji, the elusive demon king who slaughtered Tanjiro's family.

Terms

• Demon Slayer Corps: The Demon Slayer Corps are an organization of humans who dedicate their lives towards protecting citizens against demons. They have existed since ancient times, and over the years have gathered hundreds upon hundreds of deidcated members. Each member is trained in sword combat and put through a grand trial known as the Final Selection before they can enter the Corps. After making it through the Final Selection, the Demon Slayers are given a color-changing Nichrin Blade, and are categorized into one of ten different ranks.

• Pillars: Also called the Hashira, the Pillars are the highest ranking members of the Demon Slayer Corps, who serve as the most elite and powerful Demon Slayers available. There are very few Pillars around at one time, and each specializes in one specific Breathing Style, some of which they themselves have created. In order to become a Pillar, one must first either have defeated 50 demons on their own, or be responsible for the defeat of one of the Twelve Demon Moons.

• Demons: A race of monstrous, animalistic, and immortal creatures who have existed since ancient times, all originating back to their leader and king, Muzan Kibutsuji. Originally being human, demons are formed after inheriting some of Muzan's blood, which turns them immortal and distorts their body in many different ways. Demons must consume humans to grow in strength and recover their wounds, and they are unable to walk in sunlight without crumbling away.

• Twelve Demon Moons: Also called the Twelve Kizuki, the Twelve Demon Moons are a group of Muzan Kibutsuji's twelve most powerful and elite demon servants. In a sense, they rival the Pillars. Each member of the Demon Moons are unique in their abilities and highly dangerous even for a Pillar to face. They are split into two groups, the Upper Six and Lower Six Moons, which is denoted by the symbols on their eyes. Defeating one of the Twelve Demon Moons marks a significant blow dealt against Muzan.

• Breathing Styles: Developed over countless years, the Breathing Styles are swordsmanship styles practiced by the Demon Slayer Corps. Originating with a technique known as Sun Breathing, the Breathing Styles were developed out of this singular style as it took many different forms in the hands of many different swordsmen. All of the Breathing Styles are based around some form of element, such as Flame, Thunder, or Water Breathing. Although the users don't actually wield such elements, their styles are clearly based around them. Each Pillar is a master of one of these Breathing Styles. Each Breathing Style, and their relationship towards one another, are as follows:

Power of the Verse

Demon Slayer is a fairly tame verse power-wise, though it has very clear power progression as the series goes on. All standard Demon Slayer Corps members and lower-levelled demons reach Room level and Transonic speeds, with more advanced Demon Slayers (who have awakened their Demon Slayer Marks) and demons reach Building level. The most elite of both groups, the Pillars and the Twelve Demon Moons, reach up to Multi-City Block and High Hypersonic speeds. The verse has a fair amount of hax, including: Enhanced Senses, Clairvoyance, Precognition, Regeneration, Perception Manipulation, etc.
