Background
Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game programmed by Ninjamuffin99 with soundtrack by Kawai Sprite and artwork by PhantomArcade and evilsk8r. It can be downloaded on Itch.io for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux devices or played on Newgrounds for free.
Friday Night Funkin' is drawn and animated in a chibi-like manner with an art style inspired by graffiti street art. The game features multiple weeks where the player is confronted with different opponents with multiple songs.
The player takes on the role of Boyfriend, a wannabe rapper, who is trying to win the heart of Girlfriend. However, her ex-rockstar father, Daddy Dearest, viciously disapproves of their relationship. The father challenges Boyfriend to a sing-off for him to prove his worth. Even if Boyfriend succeeds, it won't be the last time you will hear from him, and he won't be the only one to get in your way.
Power of the Verse
The verse hosts some regular humans, skilled mercenaries and people with superhuman strength and speed. The mod universes add some more powerful characters, some reaching to cosmic tier. They mostly fight with singing which has several abilities such as Durability Negation, Absorption, Non-Standard Interaction, etcetera.
Explanations
- Rap Battles: Rap battles engage further then just a simple battle, it can lead to death. They also extend further than just simple rap battles as after Boyfriend wins, characters trying to kill him or possess him on the spot are incapable of doing so and Boyfriend survives the situation unharmed. Also those same characters trying to kill/possess him also lead with singing. This is not a game mechanic as there are several things suggesting its a legitimate thing in the verse such as Phantom Arcade confirming that Boyfriend's bones crack from losing and he requires Girlfriend to rewind time (which she can perform by doing the same head bobbing she always does) to bring him back to the start of the battle as shown here. The official itch.io page directly states that characters such as Daddy Dearest are trying to kill him and not to die in the instructions with the only way of dying being to lose a rap battle. Daddy Dearest also hired Pico as a bounty hunter to kill Boyfriend and there are implications of even more going on during rap battles in canon. Tankman even implies that boyfriend was killed by losing the rap battle itself and and not to mention every character has a death icon when they are pushed all the way to the end of the bar that shows who is winning the rap battle. That same bar is also directly called a health bar by Phantom Arcade.
- Pico: Pico's School and the Pico Verse is canon to Friday Night Funkin'. It has even been approved by Tom Fulp who called it official Pico lore while Ninjamuffin called it Friday Night Funkin' lore and their relationship is not a joke. Pico is even shown with Boyfriend in Pico's School: Love Conquers All which is only a timeline split due to Pico simply talking about a band he likes which stopped the shooting all together, which would confirm Boyfriend exists in the main universe too. Its even stated to be a retelling of that exact same event and everything prior is the same as the main universe where Friday Night Funkin' and Pico's School takes place. It has even been confirmed multiple times that they were exes in the main universe. (context) Tankman even directly mentions Pico being ''sexually ambigious" refering to his past relationship with Boyfriend and directly references the events of Pico's School. (Note: It's a common misconception that Pico was the shooter despite being the hero)
- Mods: It has been essentially stated by ninjamuffin that mods are canon, due to this we have set it so we can reasonably tier the mods side of Friday Night Funkin' without it becoming an incoherent scaling mess of unreasonably high statistics. Mods are allowed if they have their own week, have cutscenes, their own song charts, and have lore behind them. This means that character replacements, or a character replacing another character on a week are not allowed.
Verse Scaling
Everyone naturally scales to Boyfriend's superhuman speed and singing hax which are Durability Negation, Absorption, and possibly Non-Standard Interaction.
