Jigokusei Remina

From The Codex
"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Background

Remina, also known as Jigokusei Remina, is a Japanese manga series by Junji Ito. It was serialized in Big Comic Spirits Zōkan Casual from September 2004 to July 2005, and later collected into a single volume. This work showcases Ito's signature style of cosmic horror, where humanity is confronted with terrifying, incomprehensible forces from beyond.

Plot

Following the discovery of a mysterious rogue planet on a trajectory toward the solar system, Remina Oguro, the daughter of the scientist who identified it, becomes an instant celebrity when her father names the planet after her. Initially admired and adored, this changes drastically when the planet—now known as Remina—shows signs of heading towards Earth and annihilating everything in its path. Fear quickly spirals into hysteria, leading to homicidal madness as people turn on Remina, believing her to be linked to the planet's destructive course.

As Planet Remina approaches Earth, it is revealed to be no ordinary rogue planet, but a massive, sentient organism with a cruel intent to torment and destroy humanity before devouring the Earth. Facing imminent death and relentless persecution, Remina, with only a mysterious homeless man as her ally, must escape the human mob that seeks to crucify her. This mob is led by a fanatical cult convinced that sacrificing Remina will end the cosmic catastrophe caused by the entity bearing her name. After the mob kills her father, Remina’s struggle for survival becomes even more desperate as she tries to outwit the cult and evade the horrors both in the sky and on the ground.

List of Misconceptions

The Planets' name is "Hellstar Remina"

The name itself comes from a specific fan translation of its Japanese title Jigokusei Remina. The 2020 VIZ edition of the manga even changes its title to simply Remina, likely to allude to both the entity, as well as the girl it is named after.

Thus "Hellstar Remina" is not an official name of the planet itself, and is just a fan-translated name for the title of the manga itself.

Power of the Verse

The story mainly has regular humans in a more futuristic society, though the main threat, Remina, is a large planet-sized creature able to move at near-light speeds to faster-than-light speeds to devour stars, planets, and the like, all the while having some abilities such as Gravity Manipulation, Madness Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, Acid Manipulation, etcetera.
