Mewtwo

From The Codex
Pokémon/Mewtwo
Jump to navigationJump to search

Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon that debuted in Generation I. While it has no pre-evolution, it can undergo Mega Evolution into two distinct forms: Mega Mewtwo X when holding Mewtwonite X, and Mega Mewtwo Y when holding Mewtwonite Y. Mewtwo is a clone of Mew and shares a close association with it, leading fans to refer to the pair collectively as the Mew duo. It is the final Pokémon listed in both the Mountain Kalos Pokédex and the Lumiose Pokédex.

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Mewtwo’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Mewtwo's history is found in the Cinnabar Mansion/Pokémon Mansion where diaries there indicate how an investigation in South America found Mew and through experimenting with Mew, it gave birth to Mewtwo.

Mewtwo seemingly was too powerful to control and was too vicious eventually escaping and residing within Cerulean Cave. The cave was deemed too dangerous for trainers not of a champion level to enter, with the cover up being that the wild Pokémon there are too dangerous.

It is eventually caught by the trainer Red or Leaf, and later seems to go into other Pokémon trainers possession.

During the era of Generation 6, it is found that Mewtwo came to the Kalos region for reasons unknown, Team Flare scientist theorize that Mewtwo came due to hearing of Mega Evolution and wanting to obtain it to grow stronger.

During the era of Generation 7, Mewtwo is one of the legendary Pokémon that can be found within the Ultra Beast space, likely looking for a worthy opponent.

In Pokkén Tournament, Mewtwo is shown to be corrupted by a mysterious crystal, turning it into a Shadow Pokémon, it is eventually purified and returned to normal.

Name Meaning

The name "Mewtwo" is very literal, it is born from the Pokémon "Mew" and has its DNA composition, thus "Mewtwo".

As a genetically modified version of Mew it has a similar look to it.

Appearance

General Description: Mewtwo is a bipedal, humanoid Pokémon with some feline features. It is an artificial Pokémon.

Physical Features Regular: Its body is primarily gray with a long, purple tail and a large purple underbelly. Two short, blunt, ear-like horns are on top of its head. It has purple eyes. A tube extends from the back of its skull to the top of its spine, bypassing its neck. It has a defined chest and shoulders resembling a breastplate. The three digits on each hand and foot have spherical tips. Its tail is thick at the base but thins before ending in a small bulb.

Shadow Mewtwo: A unique variant of Mewtwo with dark gray skin, a dark gray tail with a yellowish-orange tip, and a shard of Shadow Synergy Stone coming out of its shoulder.

Mega Mewtwo X: Larger and bulkier than its normal state. The horns on its head are longer and extend from brow-like ridges on its forehead, now pointed and curving upward. Two tubes are behind its neck. Its eyes are light blue. Large, purple ridges over its shoulders fuse behind its back as a single, hump-like growth. Its forearms and legs grow much bulkier and gain two protruding ridges resembling veins. Its hands and feet grow bigger with longer, more prehensile digits. Its tail is slightly shorter and stiffer with a curled tip.

Mega Shadow Mewtwo X: Greatly resembles Mega Mewtwo X, but maintains dark gray coloring due to the influence of the Shadow Synergy Stone. The glowing yellow-orange of the stone's infection spreads to both shoulder growths, arm ridges, and the tips of its ears. The Y-shaped line running across its body, now including its legs, glows the same yellowish-orange color.

Mega Mewtwo Y: Smaller and lighter, losing its long tail, underbelly, and the tube behind its neck. It grows a long, purple appendage with a curled tip from the back of its head, similar to its previous form's tail. Two pointed, backward-curving spikes are on its head with a half-ring structure connecting to the base of each and crossing over the top of its head. Its eyes are now red and slightly larger. The digits on its hands and feet are now purple and more bulbous, with the middle toe longer than the others. A bumpy ridge similar to a sternum replaces the breastplate structure on its chest, though this form is still largely smoother than the other two.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: Shadow Mewtwo, Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Shadow Mewtwo X, and Mega Mewtwo Y are considered alternate forms of Mewtwo.

Personality

  • Vicious Heart: Mewtwo is noted in several Pokedex entries to have no compassionate heart or to have a vicious heart. This is due to being genetically modified for the pure purpose of battle.

Goals

  • Prove itself the strongest Pokémon (Ongoing).
  • Find ways to get stronger (Ongoing).

Mew

Should also be physically superior to weak pokémons such as Magikarp who has one of the weakest attack stats and even with stats this low it can can break apart large boulders overtime[14], crater the ground with splash[15] break trees in half over time[15] and break frozen trees in half over time[15]). At least Country level (Potency) with Psychic Powers (Mewtwo's moveset consists of using psychic powers and augmentations when fighting against Pokémon, making his offenses and defenses impenetrable even to some of the strongest Pokémon[16]. Bright Powder

  • Description: The Bright Powder, formatted BrightPowder prior to Generation VI, is a type of held item introduced in Generation II that decreases the opponent's accuracy.
  • Usage: Used as a held item.
  • Function
    • Generation II: Moves targeted at the holder have an additional 20/256 (~8%) chance to miss, including for one-hit knockout moves.
    • Generation III onward: Bright Powder now reduces accuracy of moves targeting the holder by 10% of what their accuracy would be otherwise. Bright Powder no longer affects one-hit knockout moves.

Notable Techniques

  • Pressure: Pressure forces an opponents attack to expend more stamina (in the context of Pokémon, expend more PP usage). Outside of fights, it makes it more likely for more powerful wild Pokémon to spawn.
  • Unnerve: Unnerve makes the opponent too nervous to do things like eat berries.

Status Effects

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of Pokémon

Status Effects
Name Effect Apperances
Burned Reduces one's physical attack and takes damage overtime from the burns. Usually caused by Fire type moves and generally lasts indefinitely unless an external item, ability like shed skin, or move like rest is used. In Generation 1, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. In Generation 2, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/8 of its maximum health. In Generation 8 onward, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. Burn status can be caused by the following moves: Beak Blast (if a Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move during the move's charging phase), Blaze Kick, Blazing Torque, Blue Flare, Burning Bulwark (If contact is made with the user of the move), Burning Jealously (If the Pokémon has increased stats during that turn), Ember, Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Fire Punch, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Fling (if holding a Flame Orb), Heat Wave, Ice Burn, Infernal Parade, Inferno, Matcha Gotcha, Lava Plume, Psycho Shift (If the user of the move is already inflicted with the burn status), Pyro Ball, Sacred Fire, Sandsear Storm, Scald, Scorching Sands, Searing Shot, Secret Power (when used on a volcano), Shadow Fire, Sizzly Slide, Steam Eruption, Tri Attack, and Will-O-Wisp. Most Pokémon Games
Freeze Prevents any action in battle. Usually caused by Ice type moves and generally only lasts for multiple turns, they can be thawed out early if hit by a fire move. The thaw out chance ranges from generation, in Generation 2 the thaw out chance is a 25/256 chance. In Generation 3, the thaw out chance is 20% each turn. In Pokémon Champions, the thaw out chance is 25% each turn. In Generation 1, a frozen Pokémon cannot break out unless hit by a fire-type move that can inflict burn or if an opponent uses the move Haze. Frozen status can be caused by the moves: Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Freezing Glare, Ice Beam, Ice Fang, Ice Punch, Powder Snow, Secret Power (when used in snow or ice weather), Shadow Chill, or Tri Attack. Most Pokémon Games
Frostbite In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the freeze status conditions is replcaaed with frostbite. Frostbite has the Pokémon lose 1/16 of their maximum health every turn and reduces damage dealt by a frostbitten Pokémon's special moves. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Paralysis Has a chance of preventing any action in battle and lowers speed stat. Usually caused by Electric type skills, it lasts indefinitely without external help, any ability like shed skin, or a move like rest. In later games, attacking a shocked enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Paralysis in general has a 25% chance of having a Pokémon be unable to attack asides from Pokémon Champions. In Generation 1, paralysis reduces a Pokemon's speed by 75% rounded down due to a stats modification glitch (along with this, using moves like agility would return the dropped speed to normal and double it and the speed drop would stay even after being cured of Paralysis using an item or through Rest). In Generation 2, the irregularities are fixed. In Generations 7 and 8 the paralysis reduces the Pokémon's speed by 50%. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the paralysis is changed to reduce the affected Pokémon's movement speed during battle. In Pokémon Champions, paralyzed Pokémon have a 12.5% chance to be fully paralyzed. The ability to paralyze can be done by the following moves: Body Slam, Bolt Strike, Bounce, Buzzy Buzz, Combat Torque, Dire Claw, Discharge, Dragon Breath, Fling (if holding a Light Ball), Force Palm, Freeze Shock, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Stun Shock, G-Max Volt Crash, Glare, Lick, Nuzzle, Psycho Shift (if user of the attack is already paralyzed), Secret Power (When used on plain terrain, building floors, link battles, Sky Battles, Distortion World, or Electric Terrain is in effect), Shadow Bolt, Spark, Splishy Splash, Stoked Sparksurfer, Stun Spore, Thunder, Thunder Fang, Thunder Punch, Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Tri Attack, Volt Tackle, Wildbolt Storm, and Zap Cannon. Most Pokémon Games
Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. In Generation 1 a poisoned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of their maximum health at the end of every turn. A badly poisoned Pokémon still takes 1/16 of their maximum health at first, however the damage increases by 1/16 each time it takes poison damage. In Generation 2, the damage is lowered to 1/8 of its maximum damage and poison damage taken by a badly poisoned Pokémon doesn't interact with other types of recurrent damage. From Generation 1 to 4 all poisoned Pokémon in a trainer's party loses 1 HP for every four steps taken (in FireRed and LeafGreen it's instead every five steps). In Generation 1 to 3, the poison Pokémon will take poison damage until they faint. In Generation 4, a poisoned Pokémon's HP will be brought to 1 and then they will cure themself of poison. In Generation 5 to 8 poisoned Pokémon no longer take poison damage outside of battle. In Legends: Z-A, poisoned Pokémon take damage whil it is outside its Poké Ball. The moves that inflict poison are as follows: Baneful Bunker (If Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move), Barb Barrage, Cross Poison, Dire Claw, Fling (if holding Poison Barb), G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Malodor, G-Max Stun Shock, Gunk Shot, Mortal Spin, Noxious Toruqe, Poison Gas, Poison Jab, Poison Powder, Poison Sting, Poison Tail, Psychco Shift (if the user of the move is poisoned), Secret Power (When used in tall grass), Shell Side Arm, Sludge, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Smog, Toxic Spikes, Toxic Thread, and twineedle. Most Pokémon Games
Confusion Confused Pokémon become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy or attack themself. In Generations 1-6 it was a 50% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Generation 7 and onwards, it was a 33% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Legends: Z-A, confusion causes the Pokémon to move sporadically. The following moves cause confusion: Axe Kick, Chatter, Confuse Ray, Confusion, Dizzy Punch, Dynamic Punch, Flatter, G-Max Gold Rush, G-Max Smite, Hurricane, Magical Torque, Psybeam, Rock Climb, Secret Power (only when used on a rocky surface), Shadow Panic, Signal Beam, Strange Steam, Supersonic, Swagger, Sweet Kiss, Teeter Dance, and Water Pulse. Most Pokémon Games
Infatuation Infatuated Pokémon have a chance of not attacking the Pokémon they're infatuated with. There is a 50% chance of the move failing due to infatuation. The following moves cause infatuation: Attract and G-Max Cuddle. Most Pokémon Games
Flinch The Pokémon flinches from an attack, costing them their turn. Only Pokémon with abilites like inner focus will prevent flinching. The following moves cause flinch: Air Slash, Astonish, Bite, Bone Club, Dark Pulse, Double Iron Bash, Dragon Rush, Extrasensory, Fake Out, Fiery Wrath, Fire Fang, Fling (only if King's Rock or or Razor Fang is held), Floaty Fall, Headbutt, Heart Stamp, Hyper Fang, Ice Fang, Icicle Crash, Iron Head, Low Kick, Mountain Gale, Needle Arm, Rock Slide, Rolling Kick, Secret Power (only in caves, rocky terrain, burial grounds, or in space), Sky Attack, Snore (Only if asleep), Steamroller, Stomp, Thunder Fang, Triple Arrows, Twister, Upper Hand, Waterfall, Zen Headbutt, and Zing Zap. Most Pokémon Games
Sleep Prevents any action in battle. The Pokémon is asleep and will normally take some turns to wake up. In Generation 1, sleep lasts for 1-7 turns, with a 1/4 chance to wake up turn 1 and a 1/8 chance to wake up in 2-6 turns. In Generation 2 sleep lasts 2-8 turns, the Pokémon has a 1/4 chance oto wake up in 2 turns or 5 turns and a 1/8 chanc eot wake up in 3 turns, 4 turns, 6 turns, or 7 turns. In Generation 3 sleep lasts 2-5 turns. In Generation 5, sleep now lasts 2-4 turns. In Pokémon Champions, sleep now lasts 2-3 turns. The following moves cause sleep: Dark Void, Dire Claw, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Snooze, Grass Whistle, Hypnosis, Lovely Kiss, Psycho Shift (if user is asleep), Relic Song, Rest, Secret Power (only in long grass, tall grass, or grassy terrain being in affect), Sing, Sleep Powder, Spore, Wicked Torque, and Yawn. Most Pokémon Games
Drowsy The replacement for the sleep status in the Legends games. It has a chance of the afflicted Pokémon being unable to move along with taking increased damage from attacks. Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Fainted Can no longer participate in battle. In most games, if the all Pokémon faint, the trainer whites out and returns back to their last save with some of their money gone. Can only be recovered with revives, healing at a bed or Pokémon Center, or through specific moves. Most Pokémon Games
Wrap Prevents any action from a unit until the wrap ends. Pokémon Generation 1

Trivia

  • Mewtwo is listed before Mew in the Pokédex, despite having been created from Mew's modified DNA.
  • Even though Mewtwo is a clone of Mew, a Mythical Pokémon, it is classified as a Legendary Pokémon.
    • Mewtwo was the only Pokémon banned from a battle facility that is neither a Mythical Pokémon nor a game mascot. It would later share this trait with Zygarde, Cosmog, and Cosmoem, all of which are connected to game mascots.
  • Mewtwo was originally portrayed as the sole member of its species, being a clone of Mew. In the animated series and manga, however, it is implied that multiple Mewtwo have been created.
  • Mewtwo and Charizard share several similarities regarding Mega Evolution. Both were the first Pokémon to receive two Mega Evolutions rather than one, with their Y Mega Evolutions revealed before their X ones. Both change type in their X Mega Evolutions while retaining their original type in their Y Mega Evolutions. Both X Mega Evolutions are physically oriented, while their Y Mega Evolutions are specially oriented.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y was the first Mega Evolution revealed to the public.
    • It was also the first to appear in the animated series, even before Mega Evolution was officially announced.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y is one of four Mega Evolutions that are smaller than the Pokémon itself. The others are Mega Gengar (which only shrinks because it partially clips under the floor), Mega Alakazam (which loses size due to assuming a sitting position), and Mega Falinks.
  • Mewtwo's Mega Evolutions are tied with Mega Rayquaza for the highest base stat total of all Pokémon at 780, excluding the unobtainable Eternamax Eternatus.
    • Mega Mewtwo X has the highest base Attack of all Pokémon, as well as the highest single base stat of all Fighting-type Pokémon.
    • Mega Mewtwo Y has the highest single base stat of all Psychic-type Pokémon.
      • With a Mild Nature, perfect IVs, and optimized EVs, a Level 100 Mega Mewtwo Y's stats sum to 2038, the highest total of any Pokémon.
      • Mega Mewtwo Y has the greatest decrease in weight of any Mega-Evolved Pokémon, losing 89.0 kg.
      • It also has the greatest proportional weight decrease of any Mega-Evolved Pokémon, becoming approximately 0.27 times as heavy.
  • Lugia and Ho-Oh share base stat values with Mewtwo, albeit with some values swapped.
  • One of the Pokémon Mansion journals states that Mewtwo's birthday is February 6.
    • The same journal implies that Mew was impregnated with the modified clone, similar to real-life cloning. All other depictions show Mewtwo being grown using laboratory equipment.
  • In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, wild Mewtwo are programmed to always hold a Berserk Gene, but Mewtwo cannot be obtained in those games without trading. Even if Mewtwo could be found in the wild, the Berserk Gene would be consumed immediately, making the item unobtainable.
  • In Pokémon GO, Shadow Mewtwo is the only Shadow Pokémon that has a different aura from other Shadow Pokémon that isn't an Apex Shadow; instead of purple fire, it is surrounded by an aura resembling its Psychic power. It does not have a unique appearance when purified, however.
  • Mewtwo is currently the only Legendary Pokémon in Pokémon GO to have an event-exclusive form.
  • Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y were the last Mega Evolutions introduced in Generation VI to be released in Pokémon GO.
    • Additionally, they are the only Mega Evolutions not introduced in Legends: Z-A to be battled in Super Mega Raids.
  • In Pokémon GO, Mega Mewtwo Y has the highest maximum CP, at 7,267.
  • In Pokémon Pokopia, Mewtwo breaks out of a Master Ball. This is the second time a Pokémon has done so, with the first being Terapagos in Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC.
  • Mewtwo was the first Pokémon seen in the English dub of Pokémon the Series, as it appears at the very beginning of the first dub opening.
  • Mewtwo has the most animated series opening appearances of any Legendary Pokémon, with seven in Japan.
  • Mewtwo is depicted on the door of Bill's lighthouse in "Mystery at the Lighthouse," despite having only been seen by its creators and Team Rocket at that point in the animated series. Similarly, Mewtwo's sprite was depicted as a portrait in Viridian Gym, despite it being a public area.
  • In Pokémon GO, regular Mewtwo cannot learn the non-plus variants of Dynamic Punch or Future Sight and can only use the plus versions if Mega Evolved into Mega Mewtwo X or Y respectively. The non-plus versions can be learned by Armored Mewtwo, which cannot Mega Evolve or use Adventure Effects.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't end game Pokémon scale to Groudon raising the continents?

A: This is further elaborated on in more modern Pokedex entries that it used magma to do so and by evaporating the water, if you want to argue the Pokedex entires contradict each other, we have Team Rainbow Rocket, a segment based off what if timelines where the villains won, Maxie directly notes that he will use Groudon to do this exact thing of shrinking the oceans to raise the lands[66]. So this would be through abilities and not Attack Potency.

Q: Shouldn't at least late game Pokémon get Faster Than Light due to being able to dodge solar beam?

A: Solar beam is absorbing light and then shooting out a blast, it is not a light speed attack but an energy blast that absorbs light energy. On top of this, Pokémon cannot dodge this move without lowering the opponents accuracy or raising their own speed. Dazzling Gleam is a flash of light that is also 100% accuracy. Flash which is a literal flash of light is 100% accuracy. So it's clear light speed attacks are generally unmissable unless their accuracy drop or a character ups their speed to make it harder to tag them. Further examples of them not being this speed, Dragonite is pretty consistently stated in its pokedex as an impressive speed feat for it to circle the globe in 16 hours, and Garchomp is treated as impressive for being able to keep up with planes and fly at sonic speeds.
