Battler was born to Rudolf and Asumu Ushiromiya and attended the family conference every year, forming close friendships with George, Jessica, and Shannon. Requiem of the Golden Witch reveals that Battler and Shannon shared a particularly strong bond due to their mutual love of mystery novels, and Battler promised to return for her on a white horse. When Battler was twelve, Asumu died of natural causes, and Rudolf quickly married Kyrie. Disgusted by his father's infidelity, Battler renounced the Ushiromiya name and went to live with his maternal grandparents. He still visited Rudolf's new family occasionally and spent time with his stepsister, Ange. In 1986, his grandparents passed away, prompting Battler to return to Rokkenjima for that year's family conference and reconnect with his cousins after a six-year absence. Twilight of the Golden Witch reveals that Battler's biological mother is actually Kyrie, as Rudolf had impregnated both Asumu and Kyrie around the same time, with both due to give birth on the same day. Kyrie gave birth to Battler, while Asumu had a stillbirth. Rudolf bribed the doctors to switch the records in order to conceal his illegitimate child. The ??? of Twilight also reveals that Battler survived the 1986 Rokkenjima Mass Murders but suffered brain damage from near-drowning, resulting in amnesia. He was later taken in by Ikuko Hachijo and given the name Tohya Hachijo. As Tohya began to recover fragments of his past memories, he struggled to accept them as his own and began writing stories about the Rokkenjima Mass Murders as a way of coping.
Legend of the Golden Witch He meets the servants on the island and helps Kanon pick up some dropped bags of fertilizer. Later, he heads to the guesthouse and reunites with Shannon, whom he had not seen in years. He attempts to grope her but becomes unsettled when she offers no resistance. Upon entering the mansion's main hall, Battler sees the large portrait of Beatrice and the witch's epitaph printed beside it. He expresses skepticism about witches and apologizes to Maria when she insists Beatrice is real and throws a tantrum. The cousins go to the beach and discuss the epitaph, and Maria gives Battler a scorpion charm. Rain begins to fall, and the cousins return to the guesthouse. Maria becomes upset while searching for her withering rose, throwing another tantrum. Rosa appears and slaps her, and Battler tries to intervene before George asks him to hold back. That night at dinner, the family listens as Maria reads a letter from Beatrice challenging them to solve the epitaph. After dinner, Kyrie discusses the letter's purpose with Battler, asking if there could be a hidden 19th person among them. Battler invokes the Devil's Proof, suggesting that proving the existence of a 19th person would be difficult. Kyrie proposes her own theory using chessboard thinking, but they are interrupted when Rudolf calls her back to the adults' discussion. Rudolf then tells Battler he wants to speak with him and Kyrie as a family later, ominously remarking that he will be killed that night. The next morning, Battler and his cousins notice the adults and servants are distressed and follow them outside. They find several people murdered and dumped in the rose garden storehouse, including Battler's own parents. After grieving, Battler discusses the murders with Eva. She suspects there is no 19th person and that multiple culprits were involved, as one person could not kill everyone in the dining room and drag them to the storehouse. Battler disagrees, believing the culprit deliberately directed the survivors' attention to the storehouse and must be sending a message. The remaining servants talk about Beatrice in the kitchen, and Battler listens in. He is warned that Beatrice will harm non-believers. Maria appears and tells him he would have died without her scorpion charm, but Battler reveals he lost it earlier and continues to deny the existence of witches. Battler realizes the letter from dinner foreshadowed the deaths of the entire family, and Eva questions Kinzo's disappearance from the study. She suggests Natsuhi killed him and hid the body, but Battler defends her and forces Eva to back down by pointing out she is not above suspicion. Eva and Hideyoshi are later found dead in their room. Battler grieves again, feeling powerless to catch the culprit. The group notices a strange smell and traces it to the boiler room, where Kanon has been stabbed after confronting Beatrice. Battler sees an open door leading to the courtyard and runs through it in hopes of catching the culprit but finds nothing. Battler concludes that the culprit stole a master key from one of the servants' bodies, and the group decides to hide in Kinzo's study, which can only be opened with two keys. He realizes the murders are following the epitaph. Another letter from Beatrice is discovered, and the survivors suspect Nanjo and Maria of planting it. Natsuhi instructs Battler to read it, and the accused are asked to go to the parlor. Battler gives Maria his scorpion charm, having lied about losing it earlier to contradict her. The study group receives a call from the parlor, during which Maria sings. They rush downstairs and find everyone except Maria dead, with her facing a wall. Natsuhi finds another letter and barricades everyone inside the parlor. When Battler and the others break out, they find Natsuhi dead on the ground, possibly by suicide. Battler picks up her gun as Maria recites the ninth twilight, and he shoots Beatrice's portrait as the clock strikes midnight. The credits reveal that no one returned from Rokkenjima alive. In the Tea Party, Battler congratulates the reader on completing Episode 1 and discusses the murders with his cousins, Shannon, and Kanon. The others believe the witch Beatrice was responsible, but Battler refuses to accept magic and insists a human could have committed all the murders. Beatrice appears, recreating some of the murder scenes and daring Battler to explain how a human could have done it. The others in the parlor writhe in pain as their bodies fall apart, begging Battler to believe in the witch before transforming into piles of flesh. Battler swears to Beatrice that he will deny her and explain all the murders. Turn of the Golden Witch On the morning of October 5, Battler is woken by Rosa fishing something out of Maria's purse. He later heads to the chapel, where the other Ushiromiya adults have been murdered. Meta-world Battler debates with Beatrice over the chapel door and relies on the Devil's Proof due to a lack of information, prompting Beatrice to introduce the Red Truth rule. After confirming certain details, Battler concludes that the human culprit took the chapel key from Maria's envelope, locked the door with it, and returned it that morning. Following Jessica and Kanon's deaths, Rosa begins accusing Kanon of murdering Jessica since his body is missing. Battler defends Kanon, arguing that he couldn't have done it because every master key is accounted for, preventing him from locking the room. Beatrice provides more red truths, and meta-world Battler struggles to identify a human culprit. Battler learns about the Wolves and Sheep Puzzle from Maria and begins to suspect Rosa might be a wolf, as she was determined to keep the other servants away. After Nanjo and Kumasawa die, Battler hugs Maria and apologizes for not believing in witches. Meta-world Battler continues searching for a theory to explain the murders. Battler and Maria read through the epitaph, and Battler wonders if Beatrice will keep her promise to stop the murders if they solve it. In the meta-world, Beatrice assures him she always keeps her promises, and Battler notes that Rudolf has committed fraud before. George, Shannon, and Gohda are found dead in Natsuhi's room. Battler tries to inspect the bodies, but Rosa tells him to stay back to preserve the crime scene. Back in the parlor, Battler finds another letter from the witch. Rosa points her gun at him and accuses him of planting it, causing Battler to break down and insist he didn't do it. Battler goes to the dining hall to drink, and Genji takes him to Kinzo's study to meet Beatrice. There, Battler professes his belief in the witch and learns how the murders were carried out. Beatrice humiliates him by using him as a footrest, forcing him to help her change into her dress, stripping him naked, attaching a chain collar around his neck, and dragging him around like a dog. He is then taken to the grand party at midnight and devoured by goats. In the Tea Party, Battler regains his will to fight and saves Rosa from torture, declaring to Beatrice that the game will continue. The ??? shows what happened before the Tea Party, with meta-world Battler cowering after his defeat. Bernkastel and Lambdadelta lift his spirits and encourage him to continue the game. Banquet of the Golden Witch On the game board, Battler reunites with his cousins and is teased for some cheesy English lines he said to Shannon long ago. Ronove makes his appearance, and meta-world Battler grows frustrated with the constant introduction of new fantasy characters. When the adults on the game board suggest the existence of a hidden mansion on Rokkenjima, Battler sees this as an opportunity to prove that a 19th person could truly exist on the island. Beatrice shows him the past of that mansion, revealing that a 19th person did exist but is long dead. She also confirms in red that there are no more than 18 people on Rokkenjima, forcing Battler to suspect his own family and friends. During the first twilight, Virgilia and Beatrice engage in an all-out magical battle on the game board. A shocked Battler takes a break to figure out how to explain it. Virgilia educates him about Schrödinger's Cat Box, and Battler concludes that the magic battle never happened because there is no evidence to support it. Battler and Beatrice debate the first twilight again, and Beatrice and Ronove later take their own break. After EVA-Beatrice's succession, she repeatedly kills Rosa and Maria, and Battler looks on in disgust. He slaps Beatrice for enjoying the torture of his family so much and declares that she is no longer his opponent, preferring to debate Ronove instead. Battler teaches Beatrice that human lives are not toys, and she leaves to try and become a better witch. On the game board, Battler, Eva, Jessica, and Nanjo head to the mansion after George disappears from the guesthouse. They find the number "07151129" written on the parlor door, and Battler recognizes 0715 as July 15, his birthday. Inside the parlor, they discover George's corpse. Battler is left alone with Eva after Jessica is injured and Nanjo leaves to treat her. Eva kills Nanjo and attempts to break through Beatrice's defenses into the parlor. Battler pulls Eva into the meta-world to debate her and thanks Beatrice, now viewing her as a true witch. Eva summons the Chiesters to attack him, but Battler's Endless Nine manifests and blocks their golden bows. Battler begins constructing a theory with Eva as the culprit, with Beatrice providing help and evidence. He becomes stuck on Nanjo's death, as it was impossible for Eva to have done it. Eva strangles Battler with webs of red truth, and Beatrice sacrifices herself by denying witches in red. Battler closes his eyes and covers his ears as Beatrice denies witches, erasing Eva and the meta-world. On the game board, Battler declares Eva is the culprit as she shoots and kills him. Battler and Beatrice reunite in the Golden Land, greeted by all the humans and furniture. Because Battler finally accepted Beatrice as a witch, he was welcomed into the Golden Land. He is guided to a document and asked to sign, officially recognizing Beatrice as a witch. Battler realizes he has been tricked the entire time—Virgilia was pretending to be on his side, and Beatrice's reformation was merely an act. An unknown girl soon breaks into the Golden Land and tells Battler not to sign. Alliance of the Golden Witch On the game board, Battler spends time in the guesthouse, where Kumasawa and Gohda tell him that Kinzo has been summoning witches and demons to kill people. The cousins receive calls from the prisoners in Kuwadorian and lock Kumasawa and Gohda inside the garden warehouse, throwing the key to Gohda inside. The cousins are then told to stay in the guesthouse until they are called for their succession tests. Jessica and George go first, and Battler later receives a call from Jessica, who says she has been killed and will die again soon. Kyrie also calls, telling Battler she is being attacked by a golden thread, urging him to believe in witches before she is killed. Beatrice herself then calls and tells him to come to the front of the mansion. On his way, Battler checks the storehouse and sees what appear to be Kumasawa and Gohda dead and hanging from the ceiling. He also finds George's body lying in the rose garden arbor. Battler approaches the mansion and sees Beatrice on the balcony, with a box containing his test waiting at the front. The test asks him to choose one of three things to give up: his own life, the life of a blank figure (which Beatrice left empty because she did not know who Battler cared for), or everyone else's lives. Battler does not take the test seriously, so Beatrice changes it to one where he must remember his sin—the reason many people die on Rokkenjima. Battler has no idea what she is referring to, and Beatrice leaves. In the meta-world, Beatrice presses Battler on the same question and tells him in red that he does indeed have a sin. Battler remains clueless. Beatrice later plans to abandon the game, meaning Battler will neither win nor lose. She wants to ensure her opponent—Kinzo's grandson—is worthy and forces Battler to repeat several things in red, revealing that Asumu is not his biological mother. Beatrice suggests that Battler may have been a replacement set up by Rudolf in a plot to secure the inheritance, causing Battler to suffer an identity crisis before disappearing into oblivion. Battler is eventually called back to the meta-world and reawakens when Gretel tells him he can still be Beatrice's opponent as long as he is Rudolf's son and Kinzo's grandson. Gretel then reveals she is actually his sister Ange, tearfully urging him to defeat Beatrice and return home so she will not be alone in the future. Ange is torn apart into bloody pieces, and Battler is filled with renewed determination to truly defeat Beatrice. In the Tea Party, game-piece Battler explores the island. He finds Kyrie's body and holes in the wall that support her story of a thread attack. He also discovers Kinzo's burnt corpse in the boiler room. He finds Maria's body in the dining hall and suspects she was poisoned. After discovering the corpses of the prison escapees, he realizes he is the only one left alive on the island. Having completed his investigation, meta-world Battler begins his final debate with Beatrice, attempting to answer every mystery since the first game. He pursues the theory that Kinzo was dead all along and that an 18th person X took his place. Beatrice asks about the fourth game and summons a ghostly Kinzo, who transforms into a dragon. Battler disperses the dragon by stating that everyone in the dining hall acknowledged Kinzo's existence. Beatrice then declares in red that Kinzo is truly dead and that there are no more than seventeen people on Rokkenjima. Battler revises his theories and impales Beatrice with multiple blue spikes. Beatrice uses her remaining power to "expose her heart" and sends a ghostly version of herself to present Battler with one final riddle: he is alone on the island with no one to interfere, yet she is there now and will kill him. She asks, "Who am I?" Battler embraces Beatrice and vows that he will kill her.
End of the Golden Witch Battler returns to the smoking room and observes past events on the game board. Bern asks for his thoughts on Kinzo's status, now that his death has been shown and confirmed in red. Battler also expresses frustration when Bern states that Natsuhi was alone during her tea with Beatrice, implying no one else was present. To ease the comatose Beatrice's suffering, Battler declares in blue that he only needs to deny the existence of witches on October 4 and 5, 1986. He then retakes the detective position from Bern and learns that the game has already reached the second day, with a piece version of Battler placed by Lambdadelta having taken his place for most of that time. On the first day of the game board, Erika Furudo arrives on the island and introduces herself to the Ushiromiya family. Battler confirms the number of humans present in the parlor, establishing that everyone on the island is gathered there. Battler and Erika work together to solve the epitaph, and Battler receives guidance from Kinzo pointing him in the right direction. They soon find the gold room, and Erika allows Battler to take credit for the discovery. The family gathers to celebrate, and they agree to discuss matters further the next day. Before retiring for the night, Rudolf tells Battler he wants to talk as a family later about circumstances regarding his birth. In the meta-world, Battler discusses the gold with Virgilia and learns that Beatrice has nothing to gain whether the epitaph is solved or not, and that Battler is not the culprit in any of the previous games. Battler falls asleep in the cousin room and wakes the next morning to find that the cousins and Rosa have been killed. He screams, drawing everyone's attention. He and Kyrie cover the bodies with blankets, and when Battler attempts to stop Erika from investigating, she invokes the Detective's Authority. Later, Erika investigates Kinzo's study and attempts to prove that Kinzo is dead and does not exist at all. Eiserne Jungfrau is summoned to enforce this claim against the magic side and Kinzo's spirit. Piece-Battler tries to prove that Kinzo could have escaped the study. Dlanor A. Knox challenges his claim, but Battler proves it by jumping out the study window, allowing Kinzo's spirit to vanish into the forests of Rokkenjima. This enables the magic side, including piece-Beatrice, to escape. In the meta-world, Battler, Virgilia, and Dlanor discuss the mystery genre. Lambdadelta convenes a court session at midnight in the Great Court of Illusions, with Battler attempting to prove Natsuhi's innocence against Erika's accusations. Battler struggles to counter Erika's claims, and Virgilia grants him a red truth that Natsuhi is not the culprit. He uses it as his final defense, but it is dismissed due to a lack of proof. Battler is impaled by Dlanor's red longsword and falls unconscious. On the game board, Erika labels Natsuhi guilty, but Battler suddenly interjects, and the episode ends. In the ???, a previously unseen part of Battler's conversation with Dlanor is shown, in which he learns about Knox's Decalogue and how its rules serve more as guidelines for solving mysteries rather than strict laws. He also realizes that Beatrice's games are indeed solvable and reflects on all the previous games. Battler finally discovers the truth and regains consciousness, seeing Beatrice holding his hand before she disappears. Regretting that he figured it out too late, Battler pulls himself free from Dlanor's sword and claims it as his own. The blade turns gold, and he declares to a surprised Erika that he can overturn her Natsuhi culprit theory. Lambdadelta allows the court to reopen, and Battler and Erika exchange arguments. Battler proposes that he himself was the culprit in this game, noting that Natsuhi had received threatening phone calls and had admitted to disposing of a baby nineteen years ago, with earlier hints regarding Battler's birth. Erika's theory depended on Kinzo being alive and acting as Natsuhi's accomplice. With the help of the Seven Stakes, Battler declares in red that Kinzo is truly dead and could not have been an accomplice. Dlanor demands proof that Kinzo's corpse is authentic, and Battler uses the Gold Truth to guarantee it. Lambdadelta declares the match a tie and names Battler the new Golden Witch and Endless Sorcerer. Dawn of the Golden Witch BATTLER opens a new game against Erika, aiming to prove that he truly understands Beatrice. Meanwhile, Chick Beato tries to learn how to become more like the original and participates in Zepar and Furfur's love trial. BATTLER joins in and plays along as he oversees the game. In the first round, each participant is required to kill one person. BATTLER assists Chick Beato in killing Natsuhi, and the victims are used as the first twilight victims for his game, with BATTLER's human piece also becoming one of the casualties. On the game board, the remaining survivors are unable to determine how Battler and the others died, as they were all locked in their rooms with chain locks. Even Erika cannot figure it out, having given up her Detective's Authority. She manages to convince BATTLER to give her some duct tape and makes a series of retroactive moves, using the tape to seal the survivors inside the guesthouse and also seal Battler's room. When Erika returns to check on Battler's corpse, she finds it gone. The first twilight is revealed to have been a prank staged by Battler's accomplices to fake their deaths. BATTLER declares in red that he escaped the room, planning to hide in the closet while Erika searched, then swap places with another first twilight victim to reset the chain lock. However, Erika reveals that she killed the other victims and decapitated them, creating a Logic Error. BATTLER's mind becomes trapped in a closed room, unable to escape until he solves the error. Erika arranges to marry the comatose BATTLER in order to become the new Territory Lord. The love trial concludes with Shannon's victory, and Kanon and Chick Beato begin to fade away. Chick Beato transforms into the true Beatrice, while Kanon saves BATTLER from his Logic Error by swapping places with him in the room. Beatrice interrupts Erika's wedding and proves that Kanon rescued BATTLER, freeing his mind and reawakening him. Together, Beatrice and BATTLER defeat Erika with a red truth stating that, even with Erika, there are only seventeen humans on the island. In the Tea Party, Beatrice and BATTLER are wed. Requiem of the Golden Witch During the main episode, Battler is unable to visit the island in 1986 for reasons that remain unclear. In flashbacks to Yasu's past, Battler and Shannon are shown discussing mystery novels in 1980, with Battler emphasizing that the heart of a mystery is always what matters most. He promises to return for her the following year on a white horse. However, the year after that, Rudolf marries Kyrie, and Battler announces his decision to leave the family. While the rest of the family expresses sadness over his absence, Shannon continues to hope that he will come back. In 1983, Battler sends letters to his family and cousins updating them on his life, but Shannon is crushed when she receives no letter meant for her. Beatrice convinces her to let go of her love for Battler and pass it on to someone else. The Tea Party reveals the true events on Rokkenjima as described by Bern, in which the adults solve the epitaph and discover the gold room. Rudolf and Kyrie kill their siblings and attempt to convince Battler to join them in taking the gold after eliminating everyone else. The cousins are summoned by Rudolf under the pretense of a trial and sent to different locations, with Battler being called to the chapel. His ultimate fate remains unknown. At the end of the ???, BATTLER finds a young Ange crying in the chapel and comforts her by telling her the truth of what really happened on Rokkenjima—a final, happy game created just for her. Twilight of the Golden Witch Beatrice arrives as the 19th guest, and Battler welcomes her. The family holds a party, with the issues of the gold and inheritance resolved, followed by a quiz tournament. Ange grows sleepy and rests in the parlor, while Battler and Beatrice host an afterparty with the magical beings. Bernkastel invites them to play a special murder mystery game, where the culprits are revealed to be Battler, Kyrie, and Rudolf. Meanwhile, Ange falls into Bern's game and is confronted by goats spouting theories that her family are murderers. She is saved by Erika and EVA-Beatrice and becomes convinced that Battler's game is a farce. She learns that the book they saw earlier was Eva's Diary, which contains the true events of Rokkenjima, and that her key can open it. Ange returns to the party and tells Battler she wants to find the one truth, but he tells her it does not exist. Angered by his lie, she declares herself ANGE-Beatrice, and EVA-Beatrice summons goats from the future to devour Rokkenjima. Battler and Beatrice prepare an escape to the Golden Land as the partygoers hold off the horde. They seal the door after everyone escapes and head to the chapel where Eva's diary is kept. Ange's group attempts to break in, and Battler is trapped in a crystal where Erika challenges him to a closed-room duel. During the fight, Battler insists that learning the One Truth will only make Ange sadder, and that she needs to move on. Battler ultimately loses, and Ange retrieves the diary and heads to the City of Books. When Ange's group retrieves the diary, Erika challenges Battler with theories surrounding the fifth and sixth games. She declares that in the fifth game, Battler was an accomplice to the real culprit and could have been the caller. Battler counters with red truths but is ultimately defeated. Confession of the Golden Witch reveals more about Yasuda's relationship with Battler and how his return in 1986 became the primary motive for planning the Rokkenjima Mass Murders. Ange reads the diary and falls into despair, plunging into the void and reawakening in the Golden Land. After reconciling with everyone, Battler and Ange, with Lambdadelta's help, plan to sneak into the City of Books and retrieve the diary before Bern and Featherine can reveal its contents. They sneak around and play rock-paper-scissors to decide who will act as a distraction, which falls to Lambdadelta. She fights Bern while Battler and Ange retrieve the key, but Featherine intervenes. Lambdadelta dies, and Bern mocks her death, prompting Battler to punch her repeatedly. The two Game Masters begin a battle in which Bern attacks Battler with countless closed-room mystery stakes. Battler dodges many but is killed. Ange revives him using her powers as the Witch of Resurrection, and the rest of the family and magical beings are summoned to deliver a final blow to Bern. The diary is successfully retrieved, and Battler and Beatrice see Ange off into the future, presenting her with two doors. In the Visual Novel, there is both a magic ending and a ??? ending. In the Magic Ending, the events of October 6, 1986 are shown: Battler and Beatrice escape the island on a motorboat, taking a gold bar from the gold room. After driving some distance, they kiss. Battler then sees Beatrice throw herself overboard with the gold bar tied to her ankle, intending to kill herself to atone for her sins. Battler dives after her and embraces her, and they sink into the ocean together. In the ???, many years after Ange has accepted the events of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders, she meets with the author Tohya Hachijo and learns that he is actually Battler, who survived drowning and was found by Ikuko Hachijo. He suffered brain damage and amnesia and was given the name Tohya because he could only remember his age—18. As the Rokkenjima Mass Murders grew in popularity, Tohya began recovering memories of Battler but could not accept them. He wrote forgeries about the murders to cope. Although Ange wanted to meet him years earlier, Battler declined because he feared that seeing her would fully turn him back into Battler and cause Tohya to disappear. Ange eventually convinces him to meet her at a party, and they later visit the refurbished Fukuin House, which has been remodeled to resemble the Ushiromiya mansion. Ange also commissioned the original artist to create a new Beatrice portrait for the house. Upon seeing it, Tohya is finally able to let go of his memories as Battler. In the manga, both endings are used. A retelling of Requiem's Tea Party is shown, where after Battler was called by Rudolf, he asked Gohda for directions to the chapel and stumbled upon his corpse. He soon found Jessica and everyone else dead. He made his way to the gold room and found the adults' bodies, then saw Beatrice. She led him through a tunnel to Kuwadorian after hearing footsteps behind them. Battler realized Beatrice was Shannon in disguise, as their voices sounded similar. They escaped the explosion and rested in the tunnel, then left the island on a motorboat. Beatrice threw herself overboard, and Battler dived after her. They drowned and soon ended up in the Golden Land. Beatrice saw that Battler had forgotten who he was and decided to play a game with him to help him remember, beginning with Legend of the Golden Witch. Then it cuts to many years later with Ange as an accomplished author meeting with Tohya Hachijo and the same events play out. As noted by Ryukishi07, he believes the manga adaptation is the official answer[1]. |

Personality
- Kind-Hearted: Battler is fairly kind-hearted, helping others whenever he can and intervening in arguments between his relatives.
- Intelligent and Skeptical: Battler is fairly intelligent and a fan of mystery novels. He is very skeptical of magic and prefers logical explanations, but is held back by his refusal to accept that his family and friends could be murderers, preferring to accuse an unknown person X as the culprit.
- Perverted: Battler is very perverted, attempting to grope Jessica and Shannon when he reunites with them and joking with Maria about her being too young. He does note however he never actually plans on touching anyone and is always expecting to be hit when he does it, noting he acts silly in hopes that the person will react and tell him off[2].

Relationships
Rudolf Ushiromiya
Rudolf is Battler's father, though their relationship has been strained ever since Rudolf married Kyrie. Battler viewed this as a betrayal of his deceased mother Asumu and was deeply disgusted, leading him to abandon the family name and live with his grandparents for a time. Even after reuniting in 1986, the two remain on poor terms—Battler occasionally calls his father a bastard, while Rudolf jokes that he would gladly hand his son over to robbers. Despite their rocky relationship, Battler still sheds tears whenever his parents are killed.
Kyrie Ushiromiya
Kyrie is Battler's stepmother, though Battler himself remarks that their relationship feels more like that of siblings. Kyrie does not consider Battler to be her son and sometimes treated him coldly simply because he was Asumu's child. In Twilight of the Golden Witch, Kyrie breaks down upon learning that Battler—whom she had resented all those years—was her biological son all along.
Ange is Battler's younger sister. Despite his estrangement from Rudolf, Battler maintained a close bond with Ange and enjoyed spending time with her. During a trip to an amusement park, he won some hair ornaments from a crane game as a gift for Ange—a token she continues to cherish.
Beatrice
Beatrice serves as Battler's opponent and rival, delighting in mocking and tormenting him whenever he fails to produce theories. Battler is frequently disgusted by Beatrice's cruelty and her brutal displays of magic. This tension comes to a head in Banquet of the Golden Witch, when he refuses to continue playing against Beato after she sits by and laughs at EVA-Beatrice's torment of Rosa and Maria. Beato begins attempting to reform herself, and Battler accepts her change—but quickly returns to fighting her when he discovers her reformation was merely an act.
In End of the Golden Witch, Battler grows to understand Beatrice more deeply, crying in the ??? when he finally reaches the truth—too late. He falls in love with her and attempts to recreate her after her death. He initially regards the new Beato as a failure, but eventually comes to accept her and marries her after her memories return.
Virgilia
Virgilia acts as Battler's advisor against the witch side starting in Banquet of the Golden Witch. Though he remarks on the irony of accepting a witch's help to deny witches, Battler takes Virgilia's advice seriously and is able to move forward with his reasoning. Even after Virgilia betrays him by revealing she was on Beato's side all along at the end of Banquet, she continues to offer him guidance in End of the Golden Witch.
Battler and Erika are rivals, both tasked with denying the witch—yet their approaches differ significantly. Battler adopts an anti-fantasy stance, willing to entertain any ridiculous theory as long as it excludes magic. Erika, by contrast, remains strictly mystery-focused, grounding her theories in logic and evidence. Her pride leads her to despise having her theories disproven by Battler, and she always strives to have the final word.

Above Average Human level (Battler is seen as pretty strong with them noting his muscles come in handy[2]), Higher in the Meta-World (Capable of using magic amplification to amplify oneself[12], where one's absolute determination awakens the magic[13]). Can ignore conventional durability in the Meta-World (The Meta World is largely a conceptual plane where attacks are done[14] through the usage of truths[15]. Where witch hunters normally need to consider conceptual areas that witches escape to[16], with conceptual denials used as a primary weapon[17])
Above Average Human level. At least Wall level (Potency), likely Far Higher as the Endless Sorcerer (Sorcerers are naturally superior to a witch's familiar[18] which should make him superior to Jessica amplified by Ronove to be able to cause craters in walls with her punches[12]). Can ignore conventional durability in the Meta-World
At least Universe level (Potency) as the Endless Sorcerer (Battler was amplified by his story refusing to allow any other stories to touch his[11], allowing him to harm and overpower Bernkastel with his punches[19], where it was directly noted in Lambdadelta and Bernkastel's fight that they were destroying the universe itself[20]. Although Bernkastel did imply it was likely due to her fight with Lambda tiring her out[11]). Can ignore conventional durability in the Meta-World
Above Average Human level, Higher in the Meta-World. Existence in the Meta-World makes them very difficult to kill (Death in the Meta World is ultimately meaningless[21] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[21], the other being the death of being outside of the game[21] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore[21] effectively being a death as they refuse to come back[21], otherwise standard "death" does not exist. Even if a witch is killed in the human domain they still exist within the Meta World)

- Reality Warping (Red truths change facts[40])
- Logic Manipulation & Mind Manipulation (Red Truths can change logic and everyone's perception of logic to where everyone suddenly believed Kinzou could survive a jump out of a third-story window and be unhurt despite beforehand trying to claim Natsuhi is hiding Kinzou[41])
- Law Manipulation (Red Truths can be shared across all game boards and can operate into the human world[42])
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics
- Intimidation (A witch's portrait and stories can unnerve one enough to send a chill down their spine[47])
- Longevity (Witch's can live for over a thousand years[39], and this is considered young for a witch[48]. In the world of wtiches, six years can be a thousand and a thousand years can pass in a single sweep[49])
- Contract Bestowal (Witch's can forge contracts in return for one's soul[50])
- Immortality
- Dimensionless Existence (Witches are real and exists[51] however they has no form[51] lacking a body therefore ordinary people cannot see them unless they wish it[51])
- Abstract Existence
- Mathematical
- Primordial Source: Witches exists as illogical integers, having a case where there can be more then 18 people but less then 19[52]. Battler likens a witch's existence to an imaginary number[53]. Witches can exist as mere illusions that should not exist[54], even after being noted to be a hallucination by a red truth[55][56].
- Personal Nonexistence
- Mathematical Nonexistence:
- Logic Manipulation
- Mathematical
- Transformation
- Extra-Planar Existence (Witches naturally exist in higher planes where they can view the "game world" from[7]. Witches are cast adrift from the physical human plane and walk between fragments[8]. The accepted theory of a witch is that one becomes one the moment they gain possession of a power surpassing the boundaries of Humans that they can use as will[9]. In the world of Umineko it is noted that there's the Chessboard, the Meta Room, and the witches world which each of the different worlds being hierarchically piled up and the witches critiquing the lower world[31])
- Personal Domain (Witches create a world or Fragment in which they can use their powers freely known as a "territory"[9])
- Avatar Creation (Witches can make themselves pieces in the game world as they view themself from the higher-plane[7]. The pieces can also still operate even if their higher plane self is effectively loses all will[7]. It's noted that choosing a piece is the equivalent of a character select screen of a video game and one's consciousness from the higher plane can be sucked away when throwing their piece in[32])
- Incorporeality (Witches initially manifest as shadowy figures that cannot be seen or felt asides from the occasional odd sixth sense[47])
- Invisibility (It's noted that witches like Beatrice have mysterious happenings happen around the mansion with no one ever seeing anyone[50], down to claims of seeing floating lights and shining butterflies along with eerie footsteps echoing through the halls[50]. Witches are completely invisible to those who either do not believe or they do not wish to show themselves too[57])
- Intangibility
- Abstract Existence

- Fate Manipulation (Witches can bestow one with the Golden Butterfly Brooch, an object that arranges all fate variables in a favorable manner to form relationships between the sexes[67])
- Resistance Manipulation (It is revealed in reality that witches set their own weaknesses as they believe being an all-powerful witch with no weaknesses would lead them to boredom[68])
- Plot Manipulation (Witches like Bernkastel and Lambdadelta showcase that they can interfere in a game master's gameboard and tamper with the story[69]. This is even shown in Bernkastel and Lambdadelta's story mode in Umineko: Golden Fantasia where they tamper with Beatrice's game board just by entering it[70]. The witches domain is a world of narrative[21], where a witches true form resides while their human self resides in the human domain[71]).
- Resistance to
- Disease Manipulation (Noted by Maria that witches don't get sick[72])
- Mortality Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Witches are incapable of being killed through the execute command which changes a character's bio to explain how their story ended[73])
- Conceptual Manipulation (Witches need to fight against the trials where[74] disproving their existence[75] puts their life on the line[75] though denial of their existence is translated as pain which they can take until there's no possible way to prove their existence[75])
As Battler became the Endless Sorcerer[4], he gains access to Beatrice's abilities which are:
- Resurrection

Beatrice has 72 Great Demons working under her[18], giving her a wide variety of different abilities from each one including:
- Gaap
- Furfur and Zepar
- Bestowal (Furfur and Zepar can bless one with immortality, this is shown when Jessica is stabbed in the head with a leviathan spike and survives regardless[12])
- Emotion Manipulation (With Zepar, has the ability to control love, bestowing an ultimate defensive barrier of immortality upon the maker of the contract, giving them enough courage to unflinchingly face any wounds love might cause[84]. With Furfur, has the ability to control love, bestowing endless inexhaustible offensive power upon the maker of the contract, giving them enough courage to fearlessly overcome any barriers to their love[85])
- Ronove
Raised to the level of Game Master after finding Beatrice's truth[71], giving him:
- Reality Warping (Game Masters are the controllers of the game board)
- Bestowal (Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[86], known as "the right to spectate"[86])
- Plot Manipulation
- Author Authority: Game Masters are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[54] gameboard stories are compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[54]. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[87]. Game Masters can smoothly alter their plot at will[88].
- Illusion Manipulation (The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[69])
- Law Manipulation (Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[74])
- Truth Manipulation (Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[75]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[89])
- Mortality Manipulation (Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[71])
All previous powers and abilities to an unfathomably greater extent.
- Invulnerability
- Metaphysical Invulerability: Battler refuses to let other stories interact with his story, impressing even the likes of[11], Umineko When They Cry/Featherine Augutus Aurora. Only one at the level of a game master can challenge him.
Golden Longsword
- Description: An extremely powerful weapon formed out of Dlanor A. Knox's Red Key, having been imbued with Battler's power as a Territory Lord and fully recognized him as its only master[90].
- Usage: Used as a weapon.
- Function: It retains all of the characteristics of the Red Key, being a purely conceptual blade whose purpose is to deny the existence of opponents, while completely negating the very concept of resistance against attacks and skewering them regardless of stamina; that is, they are denied of the right to evade, erect barriers (Be them physical, mental or conceptual) or reversing time, and even increasing their own statistics or resurrecting themselves becomes an impossibility against this weapon. In addition, Battler is also capable of imbuing the longsword with both the Red and Blue Truths, channeling their effects into its attacks.
Notable Techniques
Endless Nine
Battler does not possess any magical abilities of his own and typically relies on his intellect, the Devil's Proof, and chessboard thinking to make theories. His staunch refusal to accept magic gives him the magical defense of Endless Nine, which nullifies any magic attacks used on him.
Golden Sorcerer Abilities
In End of the Golden Witch, Battler reaches the truth of Beatrice's game and ascends to Game Master, receiving a golden longsword which he uses to spin blue and red truths at will. Battler also obtains the power of Gold Truth, enabling him to guarantee certain aspects that would be impossible to prove prior. He gains Ronove, the Stakes of Purgatory, and Virgilia as his Furniture.
Taking on the name Lord BATTLER and the titles of Golden Sorcerer and Endless Sorcerer, he is able to create game boards of his own and manipulate the pieces within.
Standard Attacks (A Button)
Short-ranged, low damage dealing attacks, the typical fighter's attack, however these attacks come out fast[24].
Standard Attacks (B Button)
Average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks, these move also at decent speed[24].
Standard Attack (C Button)
High-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[24].
Partner Switch
The fighters can switch in with their partner fighter during battle[24].
Throw
A typical throw attack, can be countered if the opponent uses inputs throw at the same time[24].
Specials
When the special gauge is up, a character can utilize their special attacks[24].
EX Specials
Stronger specials that take away one of the fighters stocks[24].
Super
The fighter's super attack that causes two stocks to use[24].
Break Limit
A break limit is a gauge dictating how long fighters can block and guard from attacks before it breaks[24].
Touch
Guard Touch is a method to counter against guard breaks to temporarily stun the enemy[24].
Knockback Guard Touch causes the enemy to knockback from the counter[24].
Damage Touch is a combo breaker that causes the opponent to fly far away[24]. Though damage touch greatly increases the charge recovery time[24].
Assault Touch is an invicible dash attack that has the fighter crash into the opponent[24]. Though it greatly increases the charge recovery time[24]. Assault Touch can go through special attacks[24].
Stunning
Fighters can combo a fighter enough to where they enter a state where they're dizzy[24]. In this state, they cannot do bursts.
Metaworld Gauge
A red gauge appears beneath the timer. Once fully charged, a fighter can activate Meta-World at the cost of one stock, which alters the stage's appearance[26]. While Meta-World is active, the passive abilities of the activating fighter takes effect. The fighter also gains access to their meta attacks for the duration[26], as long as they continue performing the correct button inputs. The opponent can cancel Meta-World by activating it themselves as soon as it is declared[26]. In response, the first fighter may reactivate it again, provided they still have enough stocks[26].
Red Truths
The Red Truth is an absolute truth spoken in red text, introduced by Beatrice during her game with Battler. Everything said in red is the truth, and the speaker is under no obligation to provide further proof confirming what they say. Red truths cannot be used for things where the speaker cannot give an explanation, though they can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided.
It is normally advisable not to use red truths when one already has the advantage. They can be used to insult someone as if it were the truth, and can fix quick mistakes. In Episode 3, Beatrice notes that everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute.
Battler discovers that red truths are a double-edged sword that can cut one down if used carelessly. The red is information that exposes the truth and allows a counterattack if used incorrectly.
The Red Truth is defined as an absolute truth and a tool available to witches. Witches can permit humans to use Red Truths. Red truths cannot be used to force oneself to speak in red when unable, which will cause suffocation. There are no red truths in the Human World.
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing.
Red truths can only be said about actual truth. If a witch's trick contradicts the red truth, it is a lie which breaks the rules.
There are two types of red truths: one that applies to a specific game board and one that is shared across all game boards and can operate outside the cat box.
Blue Truths
Blue Truths were introduced when Beatrice allowed Battler to use them in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, but the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid. For example, "There are five master keys" is not a valid blue truth as it does not deny the witch. Instead, it must be phrased as "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"
Blue truths allege that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter. Witches can use blue truths too, as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent, forcing the opponent to disprove the blue with a red truth.
Blue truths not only refute red truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter.
Golden Truths
Golden Truths were introduced when Battler rose to the level of a Game Master and used one to prove a corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it. Golden truths can only be used by the Game Master. The strength of the truth varies; its power is equal to a red truth, sometimes inferior but other times superior.
Purple Truths
Purple Truths were introduced by Bernkastel during the final game. Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, only the culprit is capable of lying in purple statements.
—Stakes containing the seven magics that represent the seven deadly sins. In accordance with the user's orders, they bury themselves into the desired location of the desired target with perfect accuracy. Because they flit about at ultra-high speeds and change trajectories at will by bouncing off walls and the like, they have no blind spots, and will hit their targets without fail no matter what form of cover they might be hiding behind. Furthermore, it is possible to change the force they hit with depending on the part of the body at which they strike. They are extremely powerful weapons, but they cannot target pure people who have not committed one of the seven deadly sins or people who have a strong resistance to magical power. The Seven Stakes of Purgatory Files
An attack from the Seven Sisters of Purgatory that shoots out ultra-high speed stakes that hit the target with perfect accuracy.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Chess Board Debates: Characters in Umineko on the chess board largely fight in debates, normally over one's existence (notably witches or supernatural creatures), as a typical fight will not do much to either side if it's two witches or it would be unfair for a human. Game Masters normally need to construct a story in order to do a debate[21] making sure there's no paradoxes or fatal logical fallacies[21] as these all largely matter to make the debate even otherwise the witch would just win.
- Out of Chess Board: When not cosigning to debates, characters instead decide to fight physically being able to utilize different punch and kick combos along with weapons or supernatural powers. Battler in specific has shown no matter the state he's in to throw punches at his opponents.
Weaknesses
- Witch Weaknesses: One can make special chants or charms to protect themself and others from witches[50]. These charms protected Natsuhi from the witches attacking her[51]. Maria initially thought Battler was safe from Beatrice due to the charm she gave him[57] with Battler admitting later he actually did have it[92]. It's further explained that these charms are the fifth pentacle of mars, acting as a powerful ward against evil making it difficult for magical beings to get past[93]. A witch cannot fully complete their miracle if one person born with a high resistance to magic doesn't believe in magic fully[39], making their magic slowly stop working overtime[39]. Witches cannot appear before everyone as long as someone with a high resistance to magic denies their existence[94]. If too many gazes turn a witches way with their anti-magic toxins they will cause the witches body to vanish[95]. Spiders and their cobwebs are able to ward off evil[94]. Witches are in constant need of entertainment or else they will literally die of boredom[96]. Beatrice notes most witches grow tired of life after a millennium[72]. Boredom is considered a direct toxin to witches[70]. Eternal boredom is the worst poison of all: that which kills all witches[64]. Holy based magic even if it's not targeted towards a witch can seal and weaken their powers[97]. Items such as the Spirit Mirror showcase their ability to suppress the evil spirits of Akujikishima and by proxy can effect witches and holds evil spirits at bay[98]. Witches cannot completely debunk the argument of the human realm as scientific and magical theories co-exist making it where to fully prove their existence they would need to show it[33], allowing things like Battler to ever deny a magical battle happening because there are no leftover traces or proof of it[33]. Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch's magic[36]. Witches when using summoning or resurrection spells require a vessel, without it, a difficult spell becomes virtually impossible[99]. A denial of a witch's existence is translated as pain for them[75]. Most witch items lose their power if they are not given directly by the witch[100]. Magic is limited by what the user believes they can achieve, it being the reason the seven sisters of purgatory couldn't kill Ange's classmates at St. Lucia's[101]. Witch's cannot commit logic errors within the rules of the game as it would go against red truths causing them to not make magic that's still feasibly a trick under human methods[88]. If they are caught within a logic error their soul is trapped in the sealed room for eternity with them trying to figure out how to get out of it through the logic error[102]. Unless a witch becomes a Voyager Witch, most witches cannot leave their territory at will[9].
- Truth Weaknesses
- Red Truth: Red Truths[40] cannot be used[40] for cases where the explanation cannot be given an explanation with a red truth[40]. They are a double-edge sword that can be used against the user if they use it incorrectly[103]. One cannot use[29] red truths[29] to speak in red for something they do not believe[29]. Red Truths do not exist in the human world as[72] they possess powerful anti-magic toxins. Witches cannot use red truths to lie and can only be said about the actual truth[88].
- Blue Truth: Blue Truths can only be used to deny the opponent's position[27], it cannot be used to make an assertion unless it specifically is worded in a way that denies the opponent's position[27].
- Golden Truth: Golden Truths can only be used by the Game Master[43].
- Purple Statement: Purple Truths hold the same power as red truths, however the culprit can lie in purple statements, making it harder to be able to tell when it is the truth or not[44].
- Game Master Weaknesses: Game Masters in reality have a difficult process[21] when constructing their stories as they need to watch out for paradoxes and logical fallacies[21] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[21].
- Magic Weaknesses: Magic requires risk, every kind of magic carries its own risk and weaknesses[58].
- Unique Weaknesses: As noted several times by characters, Battler is incompetent and too trusting. He fell for Beatrice's tricks in Episode 3 making it look like she turned over a new leaf.
Explanations
Rokkenjima
Rokkenjima is an island in the Izu Archipelago South of Tokyo[104], being a small island no more than six miles across and owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family[104]. The island is plentiful with wildlife (specifically large flocks of seagulls) being left largely untouched by the Ushiromiya family and they only disappear to incite disaster occurring[47]. The island was bought by the head of the Ushiromiya Family after the great Kanto earthquake nearly brought the clan to ruin in 1923[47].
During the events of Episode 3 and onward, Rokkenjima entered a state of being a layered world, where both scientific and magical theories coexist thus neither side can cancel out the others arguments[33].
Ushiromiya Family
A wealthy family that annually goes to Rokkenjima island for family gatherings[104]. There was a time when the great Kanto earthquake brought the Ushiromiya clan to ruin in 1923 but the head of the Ushiromiya family used his considerable talent and astonishingly good luck to revive the family's fortunes, being the one to have bought Rokkenjima where he makes his home[47]. This is done due to his legendary ten tons of gold that he used as the foundation of his fortune[50], which other members of the Ushiromiya family are trying to get through inheritance of finding the location of the gold[105]. According to Kinzou Ushiromiya he got ten tons of gold by making a contract with the witch Beatrice[50].
Those that marry into the Ushiromiya family are not treated the same as those born by blood into it[105], they are never allowed to wear the family's crest even after marrying into it and are treated like a complete outsider due to not sharing the blood[105] being considered by some of the family members "glorified maid-servant"[105] and insulted at the idea of receiving any orders from those that do not share the blood[105].
The family is sat in according to the line of succession which is as follows:[105] Head of the Family, Kinzou Ushiromiya[105] -> Future Head of House, Krauss Ushiromiya (Jessica's Father)[105] -> Second in Line, Eva Ushiromiya (George's Mother)[105] -> Third in Line, Rudolf Ushiromiya (Battler's Father)[105] -> Fourth in Line, Rosa Ushiromiya (Maria's Mother)[105] -> Fifth in Line, Jessica Ushiromiya[105] -> Sixth in Line, George Ushiromiya[105] -> Seventh in Line, Battler Ushiromiya[3] -> Eight in Line, Maria Ushiromiya[105] -> Ninth in Line, Natsuhi Ushiromiya (Jessica's Mother)[105] -> Tenth in Line, Hideoyoshi Ushiromiya (George's Father)[105] -> Eleventh in Line, Kyrie Ushiromiya (Rudolph's Second Wife)[105]
Spirit Attunement
It's explained by the family servant Chiyo Kumasawa that every human being has the ability to sense the presence of ghost, but this affinity gradually fades with age, characters like Maria Ushiromiya being the youngest of the family is able to sense oncoming calamities and disasters[104].
Witch of Rokkenjima
The Witch of Rokkenjima is a legend[47] that was told to the children of the Ushiromiyas about how Beatrice comes on dark, stormy nights wandering out of the forest in search of human sacrifices[105]. With this legend also comes a mystery with Beatrice's epitaph that reads as follows:
If you seek the Golden Land, follow the river and seek the key downstream, you will find a village. In this village, seek the shore of which two will speak. There the key to the Golden Land sleeps.Whoever finds the eky should follow these directions to the Golden Land.
On the first night, offer up as sacrifices the six the key chooses.
On the second night, those who remain will tear apart the two who are close.
On the third night, those who remain will praise my noble name.
On the fourth night, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth night, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth night, gouge the belly and kill.
On the seventh night, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth night, gouge the foot and kill.
On the night night, the witch will revive, and none shall be left alive.
On the tenth night, the journey will end, and you shall reach the capital in which the gold dwells.
The witch will praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold in the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be the ressurection of love lost. One shall be the witch, put into an eternal sleep.
Rest in peace, My beloved witch, Beatrice.

—The Witch's Epitaph Original Japanese Text
Despite it being a legend, Beatrice the witch is real and exists[51].
It is also revealed by Genji that Beatrice was the second lover of Kinzou who perished before the mansion was built and he spent years focusing on his dark arts in order to revive her[106].
Debates
There is a plane that watches the regular plane where one can deal with debating, effectively the same as a chess game[108], effectively being the same as viewing them from a different plane[108] where witches can simply restart over and over the game, the number of times they can play being entirely up to them[108].
Gameboards can have witches effectively get everything they want, making it harder to prove them wrong during a debate[109]. One can tweak facts previously established on the game board to effectively create new rules and truths[40].
Gameboards can have turns stalled if one of the members refuse to continue[33], one can even fall into the reality of the game board[33].
Death is also handled differently in the gameboard where the lost of a piece means they simply bide their time on the side of the chessboard[33]. One's voice cannot reach into the Game Board[110].
Along with this it has no effect on anything in the main world[111].
It is established further in Battler's game board against Eva Beatrice that witches are allowed to[10][112] resurrect the dead for testimony[10] the human side cannot use this move even if there's witches on their side[10]. Along with this, witches can[112] bind one in solid undeniable red truths that they cannot break out of unless they can deny the truth[112]. Though red can also be used to fully deny a witch[112] exposing the answers and destroying all the magic[112].
Witches can also add new pieces into the Gameboard that function as detectives[113].
Each gameboard is its own world with each one's conclusion having an effect on reality[113]. For example, Eva Ushiromiya being the only survivor in one of the gameboards allowed her to live in the real world and escape the island, even when Ange found other bottles that listed the other game worlds endings.
Each gameboard exists as one small game in the endless sea of Fragments[70].
Pawns
Pawns are pieces on the game board set by the people in the Metaworld.
Some pieces have awareness that they're pieces on the game board[72].
The rights a pawn are given within a game allow them to enforce their rights within the gameboard making them able to push others off of them if it gets in the way of their role in the game[114].
The injuries pawns receive in a game board[28] or events they experience within a game board[28] have no effect on those in the metaworld[115]. Battler even makes note that the versions of him and Beatrice on the game board aren't actually them but just pawns under the Game Master's control[95].
Pawns cannot do what it deems impossible, and will execute actions best suited to the original personality[95], Dlanor notes that due to this, if Battler and Beatrice of the game board were in the same position as the pawn they would have done the same thing[95]. Battler makes note that the people within the chessboard aren't a meter metaphor, they really are chessboard pieces[69].
Game Masters
Game Masters are the controllers of the game board. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[87].
In these games, they are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[54] with these gameboard stories being compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[54].
The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[69].
Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[74].
Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[75]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[89].
Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[71].
Battler as Game Master learns how difficult in reality game board stories are to construct[21] with Beatrice constantly agonizing over contradictions in her story and a constant battle with logical fallacies[21] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[21].
Noted during Ange and Featherine's discussion that the Game Master is allowed to smoothly alter their plot at will[88].
Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[86], known as "the right to spectate"[86].
Death in the Gameboard
Death in the Game Board occurs in two ways[21] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[21], the other being the death of being outside of the game[21] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore, Beatrice gave up her victory during the previous game causing her to die and disappear[21] thus she will never come back to life[21].
It is later revealed that Beatrice as the game master made all of these stories as an attempt to hide the true story in Rokkenjima of the Ushiromiya's all being killed by Rudolf and Kyrie before Eva killed both of them[116].
Truths
Red Truths
| “ | In that case... From now on, when I speak the truth, I will use red. | „ |
| ~ Beatrice introducing the Red Truth |
During the gameboard between Battler and Beatrice, she introduced the concept of red truths, where when she speaks the truth, she will use red[40]. Everything said in red is the truth[40], when speaking the truth one is under no obligation to provide further proof that will confirm the truth of what they say[40]. They cannot[40] be used[40] for things where they cannot give an explanation with a red truth[40]. Red truths can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided[40]. It is normally advisable to not use red truths when one already has the advantage[117]. They can be used even to insult one as if it was the truth[118] along with being used to fix quick mistakes[118]. In Episode 3 when explaining red truths again Beatrice notes everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute[64]. Battler finds out the loophole to red truths as they're a double-edge sword that can cut one down if they're not too careful with it, where the red is actually information that exposes the truth and allows one to formulate a counterattack if used incorrectly[103].
The red truth is defined as an absolute truth, a tool available to witches[27]. It is later shown that witches can permit humans to use Red Truths[29].
Red Truths[29] cannot be used[29] to force oneself to speak in red when they cannot which will cause them to suffocate[29].
It is noted by Ronove that there are no red truths in the Human World[72].
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing[41].
Red Truths can only be said about actual truth[88], if a witch's trick contradicts the red truth then it is a lie which breaks the rules.
Battler later reveals there are two types of red truths, one for red that applies to a specific game board and a red truth that is shared across all game boards and can operate in the world outside of the cat box too[42].
Blue Truths
Beatrice: As of now, Battler, I will allow you to use the blue.Battler: Blue...? Meaning that I can demand that you repeat my words if I say them in "blue"? Beatrice: Not quite. Your requests could be concerning any minute detail. But the blue truth must deny the witch's position, or it is not valid. Battler: ?
Beatrice: For example: "There are five master keys." This is merely a confirmation of the number of keys and does not deny the witch. In order to use the blue, you must change your phrasing. In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room! ...And by doing so, you have now forced the witch to respond.
Blue Truths are something Beatrice allowed Battler to use in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, however, the catch is that the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid[27].
For example, a blue truth cannot be used to claim "There are five master keys." as that does not deny the witch, instead the phrasing must be "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"[27].
Blue truths alleges that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter[27].
However, witches can use blue truths too as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent where the opponent must disporve the blue with a red truth[29].
Blue Truths not only refute Red Truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter[28].
Golden Truths
| “ | The Golden Truth... It is the divine truth, derived through different means than the red truth. Its power is equal to the red truth- sometimes inferior, but other times superior!! | „ |
| ~ Dlanor on the Gold Truth |
Golden Truths were first introduced when Battler raised to the level of a game master and used it to prove the corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it[43]. However, golden truths can only be used by the Game Master[43] along with the strength of the truth varying, its power is equal to a red truth; sometimes inferior but other times superior[43].
Purple Truths
| “ | Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, the culprit alone is capable of lying in purple statements. | „ |
During the final game made by Bernkastel, she introduced a new statement known as "Purple Statements" (otherwise Purple Truths)[44], Battler directly asks what they are with Bernkastel responding that it's a rule devised to make the story easier to understand, purple statements have the same power as red truth, however, only the culprit can lie in purple statements[44].
Souls
One's soul can linger even after they are killed[117].
Kinzou nearly resisted through his soul being erased until a red truth was placed on him[65].
Fate
When something is fated to happen it is hard to change such, if a vase is broken even if a witch uses magic to remember its original state the ultimate fate "the vase was smashed" has not been changed thus it will remember the true state and break[64].
The Endless Witch
The infinite realm that all witches ought to aspire to, the endless witch is free of all worldy suffering, certain to eternal bliss[64]. Life and Death are empty concepts to the Endless Witch[64].
The Endless Witch succession has them pass their most secret arts to a single pupil, once they pass down their arts they retire to further stem their propagation[119].
Normal custom includes that a witch from another sect makes a recommendation before a succession may occur[119].
Lambdadelta recommended EVA and Bernkastel recommended Ange[119].
Initially the name Beatrice was not passed down but it later became customary for the name to be inherited as well with EVA following suit giving ANGE the name of Beatrice[119].
Knox's DecalogueThe ten commandments created by Dlanor A. Knox's father and used in heresy trials.
Knox's 1st: It is forbidden for the culprit to be anyone not mentioned in the early part of the story.
Knox's 2nd: It is forbidden for supernatural agencies to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 3rd: It is forbidden for hidden passages to exist.
Knox's 4th: It is forbidden for unknown drugs or hard-to-understand scientific devices to be used.
Knox's 5th: (not included)
Knox's 6th: It is forbidden for accident or intuition to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 7th: It is forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.
Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented.
Knox's 9th: It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and interpretations be heard.
Knox's 10th: It is forbidden for a character to disguise themselves as another without any clues.
The debate over the interpretation of these laws continues to this very day, and it has become the source of countless unfair controversies. While fundamentalists call any infringement upon these commandments heresy, revisionists point out that many canonized geniuses have violated these rules.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 5 Tips Knox's Decalogue
Knox's Decalogue were first mentioned by Bernkastel as a way to refute arguments used against Lambdadelta in their game.
Duel Pistol SetA set of demon duel pistols prepared by Zepar and Furfur. The number of shots loaded depends on the format of the duel. In most cases, it holds just a single round.
The emotions of the duelers are loaded into them, and if one of their bullets grazes any part of the body, the concept of the target will be denied without exception.
In the past, duels were performed in the classic style with swords, but this took a great deal of time before an outcome was reached, which displeased certain impatient theatergoing witches.
For this reason, a duel weapon that would always kill with a single shot was asked for and created.
Of course, this weapon is not particularly popular among theatergoing witches who are fans of good-old drawn out, dramatic duels.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 6 Duel Pistol Set
A pistol set created by Zepar and Furfur for duels that were made in order to reconcile impatient theatergoing witches.
Even if one grazes the other with a bullet, the concept of the target wil be denied without exception.
City of Books
"The Honored City of Books Curated By Her Majesty The Witch Of Theater, Drama, and observation", a massive "library" that contains all stories, including[122] where the entire stories in Umineko are merely a single book[122].
Virgilia describes it as a place where the witches who traverse the sea of fragments collect those fragments in text form and store them[123].
The City of Books is sacred territory under the administration of the Senate and there are holy barriers erected around it[123].
Only Witches of the Senate are allowed in the City of Books, though non-members can be given a special invitation that temporarily grants them entrance tot he sacred territory, but the invitations specify arriving on the dot, a second late tot he party's starting time and they automatically lose the effect[123].
Creators
Creators are mentioned multiple times throughout the series, however Lambdadelta defines them more properly, noting they are omniscient all-powerful beings beyond even witches[8].
Canon
Manga
The manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[1].
Anime
There are some beliefs the anime for Umineko is non-canon, however this is not true. In an interview, Ryukishi directly stated he is all for anime and manga adaptations of his works[124], which adds on to a later interview where he noted that he fully overlooks and supervises the anime suggesting one to watch all of the versions of Umineko[125].
Minor Differences
While it is noted that one won't be able to discuss all mysteries by looking at just the anime, Ryukishi not only notes[125], though as explained in the same quote, this is due to the impossiblity of having the mystery written the exact same way across different media, an anime cannot perfectly replicate a visual novel and vice versa, thus the anime is limtied in the amount of clues it can receive as opposed to the visual novel. Ryukishi himself directly notes that things need to be condensed to fit in the manga or anime versions but there's also far more fake leads in the original compared to the manga and anime and he believes one should enter into Umineko from the type of media they are most comfortable with and then look at the different formats to see the information in a new light[126].
Trivia
- The kanji in Battler's name, when translated literally, mean "battle person." This makes sense with Battler throwing physical punches in most of his fights.
- When designing Battler, Ryukishi07 drew partial inspiration from Phoenix Wright of the Ace Attorney series, giving Battler a pointing pose similar to Phoenix's iconic gesture[127].
- Battler's alternate color scheme in Golden Fantasia is taken from his father, Rudolf Ushiromiya.
- Ryukishi07's later work, Rose Guns Days, features a character named Philip Butler who closely resembles Battler in both appearance and personality.
- In the manga adaptation, Battler is depicted wearing his cape much earlier than in the visual novel; it materializes at the moment he becomes a sorcerer in End of the Golden Witch.
- According to one of Ryukishi07's Twitter posts, Battler's favorite sport is dodgeball[128].
- Another Twitter post suggests that after Battler abandoned the Ushiromiya name, his new surname was Akinaka, after Asumu[129]. "Akinaka" (八月十五日) can be read as "August 15th."

Misconceptions
Witches lose their powers as soon as one does not believe in them/One can simply debate a witches existence away
Throughout most of Umineko, Battler and Beatrice are debating over her existence, and Beatrice's strength slowly comes back with each game[3] due in part to the hesitation within Battler's heart[3]. Battler even establishes that simply refusing to believe in Beatrice is not enough to beat her and instead will turn him more and more into the defensive until he's simply overpowered and loses[3].
It should be noted too during majority of the first episode, none of the characters left alive believe in Beatrice asides from Maria Ushiromiya, yet she was still able to manifest in the end as she killed everyone[39].
On top of this, simply not believing would not be enough to work; Beatrice makes direct note that Battler has a strong resistance to magic thus her magic cannot reach him[39].
Of extra note, Battler directly has Bernkastel helping him[96], Lambdadelta slightly raising the chances of Battler winning[130], and Beatrice's own teacher explaining to Battler how to counter Beatrice's arguments[33]. Beatrice's teacher mainly being the reason for why Battler was able to argue against Beatrice's points[131]. It was even further noted by Lambdadelta and Bernkastel that Battler couldn't win Beatrice's game even with all of the sloppy loose ends it had and the amount of help he received[132]. Battler himself realizes while Beatrice faces against Bernkastel that she was going easy on him in all their games so that it would be a fair fight between them, constantly giving Battler hints until he got used to the game[75].
Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch[36].
It's further noted too that people who've lost their sight also lose all anti-magic power and magical resistance[133].
Even while Battler was battling against Eva-Beatrice, he couldn't truly deny her witch form for good and required Beatrice to use a red truth to kill off all magic there[10][112].
Kinzou further reaffirms that Battler was born with more of his anti-magical blood than anyone else[37].
It's noted by Maria during her status as the Witch of Origins that all humans are born with toxins that block magic[63].
It's noted by Greed that humans are walking blobs of anti-magic though she can manifest as long as a witch like Ange concentrates[63].
Despite all the anti-magic toxins, due to Ange fully believing in magic and her determination being strong she was able to have her familiars interact with the human world to kill all the guards that were after her[134][135].
Eva even tries to argue that there's no way for Ange to call the seven sisters of purgatory due to her anti-magic toxins, yet she still does[135].
Thus simply denying the existence of a witch is not enough to defeat them, as Battler himself with a narrative strong resistance to magic needs a lot of help to truly even counter Beatrice. On top of this, it's specifically noted in-universe that humans built up a strong anti-magic toxin overtime that became strong enough to deny a witch's existence[136], thus this is not a weakness that applies out of universe unless a series has a similar mechanic.
Magic Isn't Real
This comes from the arguments of debates over whether or not it's truly just characters having mental issues as a way to cope with scenarios.
For example, Maria believes she is the daughter of the Holy Ghost as a way to cope with the fact that her mom abused her whenever she asked about her dad.
However, it is proven that the Meta-World is an actual place[107] that witches reside in and there are many scenes throughout the series that can't truly be explained through characters hallucinations.
Such as Ange having her familiars directly interact with the human world and kill all of its people[134][135].
The truth of "magic isn't real"/"magic is real" debate is also answered multiple times in the Umineko franchise.
Using the final talk between Beatrice and Ange, Beatrice does a magic trick and asks Ange if it is magic of a sleight of hand[137] with Ange noting it's a cheap trick but it is also magic as Beatrice has taught her this magic to spread to others to give them happiness. No matter the magic one cannot use it properly and cannot see it without love[137].
It is also repeated multiple times throughout the series how there is no one true truth, it is everyone's point of view as to what their truth is.
Effectively magic is real but also isn't, it is in the situation of a catbox.
It should also be noted that the manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[1], giving all the answers for the reader to conclude.
Witches can easily die to guns
This statement is noted by Ronove noting that witches are weak to weapons such as guns and require anti-bullet barriers in order to be made[36].
The issue is within the scan itself, within the context of Umineko, bullets specifically contain anti-magical power that cuts right through witches and demons.
Battle Records
2 - 6 - 1
- EVA Beatrice - Fight[138]
- Conditions: It was a debate over the existence of EVA Beatrice as a witch. Battler had help from Virgilia and Beatrice.
- Location: Beatrice's Catbox
- Notes: Eva had Battler trapped within truths[112], which required Beatrice to use a red truth to get him out of[112]. Otherwise Battler would have lost.
Erika Furudo & Dlanor A. Knox - Fight[28]
- Conditions: Battler stood in for Beatrice who lost her debate. Facing both Erika Furudo in the human domain and Dlanor A. Knox in the witch's domain.
- Location: Kinzou's Study
- Note: It was revealed by Dlanor that Lamb is likely responsible for why they were not able to use their red truth and that Battler would have lost if it was used[95].
- Beatrice - Fight[139] (The entirety of Episode 1 is effectively Beatrice's game)
- Conditions: The conditions were to either solve Beatrice's epitath or they die to the witch.
- Location: Rokkenjima Island
- Note: As the entirety of episode 1 is absurdly long, the notebook notes how all of the Ushiromiya's died in the first game[140].
- Beatrice - Fight[141] (The entirety of Episode 2 is effectively Beatrice vs Battler over a chess game)
- Conditions: Match was a rematch. The same conditions as before but now on top of it, Battler is attempting to disprove the existence of witches.
- Location: Rokkenjima Island
- Note: As Episode 2 is absurdly long, Battler admits to giving in here and asks for another rematch[142].
- Beatrice - Fight[143] (The entirety of Episode 3 is effectively Beatrice vs Battler over a chess game)
- Conditions: Match was a rematch. Same conditions as before with the inclusion of the likes of EVA Beatrice.
- Location: Rokkenjima Island
- Note: Episode 3's is more complicated as Beatrice was pretending to turn over a new leaf, nearly making Battler sign the piece of paper having him acknowledge Beatrice as a witch[144] if Ange didn't come in and interfere[144] noting to Battler it was all the witch's trap[144]. Still he never disproved the existence of the witch and nearly fell for the trap meaning he lost again.
- Beatrice - Fight[145]
- Conditions: Match was a rematch. The same conditions as before.
- Location: Rokkenjima Island
- Note: Despite Battler seemingly defeating her in battle, the winner was still declared to be Beatrice the Golden Witch[145].
- Frederica Bernkastel, Erika Furudo, Dlanor A. Knox - Fight[74]
- Conditions: The case was a court trial where Erika argued for Natsuhi Ushiromiya to be the killer and Beatrice argued for Natsuhi's side saying she was the killer.
- Location: Illusory Court
- Frederica Bernkastel - Fight[19]
- Conditions: None.
- Location: City of Books
- Frederica Bernkastel, Erika Furudo, Dlanor A. Knox - Fight[43]
- Conditions: Battler ascended to the level of a Game Master.
- Location: Game Board
- Note: Battler did not outright deny Erika's truth but merely made their truths co-exist, effectively making it a draw.

Ryukishi07: The secret of the character of Sayo is the core of Umineko's story, so her inner workings and development were designed carefully and with the utmost complexity.
In the original version, in order to leave room for imagination for the reader to solve the mystery, I chose not to draw Sayo's secrets in great detail (of course, it's still possible to grasp, but I didn't show things in a way where everyone would get it.)
With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a "period" to the "sentence" that is the world of Umineko.
Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko's eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.
Thus, all of the episode of Sayo that appeared in the EP8 manga is the official answer to the world of Umineko.
By no means is the manga version an individual interpretation. It is an official answer from me, Ryukishi07." - ↑ 2.0 2.1 2.2 Umineko When They Cry -Episode 1- Legend of the Golden Witch Chapter 2 (Manga)

After reading that, there was nothing left but to take her up on the challenge. It had been awhile since Lambdadelta had played around with a game board of substance. Since Bernkastel had gone out of her way to pass it along, it was sure to be an entertaining one.
Lambdadelta touched the Fragment.
The moment she did, an array of constellations was suspended in the air, pivoting around the Fragment and forming a miniature galaxy.
"…Oh, now this is nostalgic. So the stage is set in the Japanese countryside. Reminds me of Hinamizawa. …Though, it looks like this place is more desolate than Hinamizawa ever was. …Right then, time to pick my piece. Which one should I choose?"
Lambdadelta held out a hand, and white, black, blue, and red pieces in various shapes and sizes, reminiscent of chess, appeared in the air.
"Which one would be best? …Hmm…"
To participate in a game within a Fragment, you first must send in a piece. In other words, this was much like the character select screen of a video game.
After folding her arms and giving it some deep thought, she eventually settled on a black piece.
She wasn't sure of the situation, but if the point of the game was to survive, she figured her best option would be a sturdy, clever all-rounder with a strong desire to live.
"…In which case, it's gotta be this piece. Let's go, my other self."
She plucked the piece out of midair, then tossed it into the galaxy.
As soon as she did, an infinite number of dazzling lights scattered about, and within a moment, the world was completely buried in a sea of stars.
Within those bright lights, Lambdadelta's consciousness was sucked away…" - ↑ 33.00 33.01 33.02 33.03 33.04 33.05 33.06 33.07 33.08 33.09 33.10 Umineko When They Cry - Episode 3 - Banquet of the Golden Witch Chapter 8

- ↑ Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: There are many of your works that have been adapted into anime or manga. How is it decided as to which works receive adaptations?
Ryukishi07: Basically, we receive an offer from the company, and we accept it.
So far, the availability of anime and manga adaptations of our works is made possible by courteous cooperation with such companies, and for this I am sincerely grateful.
So, for those who are rooting for more anime and manga of our work, I would be happy if you could support the Japanese companies responsible. (laughs)" - ↑ 125.0 125.1 Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""Will people be able to enjoy 'the fun of speculation' in the anime and manga versions too?"
Ryuukishi: Of course. I have been supervising those very carefully. In Higurashi, there were some problems with presentation, and they were allowed to do as they pleased in certain areas. But this time, I have been checking very carefully to make sure there are 'no misconceptions in the presentation' this time, so I think people will be able to significantly enjoy speculation in those as well.
Keiya: In that case, will people who only watch the anime be able to speculate about the series?
Ryuukishi: There is an overwhelming difference in the amount of information contained in an anime and the original work, so it will probably be best to play the original as far as 'the number of hints' is concerned. But as I just said, mysteries in pictures and mysteries in text focus on foreshadowing in very different ways, so things that you didn't notice in the original might feel very out of place in the anime. Then when you return to the original and read the same scene again, you might suddenly feel that something is very suspicious in certain places...... The opposite holds true as well, since some places might not leave an impact when on screen, but the text would lead one to wonder "why is this part being described so thoroughly?" So it might be useful to see it through different mediums." - ↑ Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""If you were to assign a difficulty to the other formats, would you say that they're easier or harder than the original?"
Ryuukishi: I believe that the primary factors that decide the difficulty of a puzzle are the amount of hints and the amount of information. In that sense, you might be able to say that the original will actually be the easiest. As you know, things need to be condensed to fit in manga or anime versions. You can't just copy every line word for word and use the same description, so the amount of information naturally shrinks. Because of this, the original will always be easy as far as the quantity of information is concerned. Although there are also more fake leads in the original (laughs). But I wonder if that makes the difficulty equal between the two. Just like Higurashi, I think you should enter into Umineko from the type of media that you are most comfortable with. Then, when you also look at the different formats and see the information in a new light, you might be able to get close to something." - ↑ Ryukishi07 Interviews (Epitanime 2012) "1/ First off, Klashikari himself asked about the references in Umineko, why did he put Touhou references, and if Battler was inspired by Naruhodo Ryuichi/Phoenix Wright.
Ryukishi07 answered that he’s the kind of author who has the bad habit of putting references in his works just to have them. (I agree with him and thought about anime like Nyaruko when he said that but I’ll leave that for another post). He said that he just puts a reference to something he currently likes a lot. At the time he was designing Battler, he definitely was hyped on Gyakuten Saiban/Phoenix Wright. He also did the Objection Finger pose." - ↑ Screenshot if twitter link dies
