| On February 27th, 1996, a peak in suicides and illnesses of children between the ages of 7-12 in Japan occurred shortly after the release of the first Pokémon games, Pokémon Red and Green. Lavender Town Syndrome was later the name given to it after it was learned that Lavender Town, an in-game location of Pokémon Red and Green featured extremely high frequencies that only children and young teens could hear.
Those affected would become irrational, complain of severe headache, develop conditions and afflictions and at worst take their own lives. After the incidents, the programmers fixed the location's music to be at a lower frequency making it so children are no longer affected by the song. In 2010, a video would be uploaded, the creator used a "special software" to analyze the audiowaves of Lavender Town's music, discovering that when played, the software created images of the Unown near the end of the audio spelling out "LEAVE NOW". This created controversy, since Unown did not appear in the series until Generation 2. |
