Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ghost’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

The story follows a collector who enjoys hunting down bootleg Pokémon games for fun, often mocking their absurd content. One day, long before the official release of Pokémon Black and White, he comes across a bootleg copy of Pokémon Red at a flea market and decides to buy it.

When he starts playing, the game appears to run normally, except for one odd detail: in addition to Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur, there is a fourth starter option called Ghost. Its sprite matches the ghosts found in Lavender Tower. It starts at level one and knows only one move: Curse. The player selects Ghost.

During battles, opposing Pokémon are unable to attack, with the game stating they are too frightened to move. When Curse is used, the screen goes black, and the cry of the defending Pokémon can be heard. When the screen returns, the Pokémon has vanished, and the opponent trainer has one fewer Pokéball, indicating that the Pokémon was killed. After the battle ends, the trainer's sprite also disappears. Returning to that location reveals a tombstone where the trainer once stood.

The player assumes the game's gimmick is that Pokémon and trainers actually die. He begins relying on Curse as his main strategy to advance, although it does not work on other Ghost-types and does not kill bosses or rivals during earlier encounters—though it does work during final battles.

After defeating the Elite Four, the screen goes black and displays the text "Many years later..." The scene returns to show an elderly version of the player character standing in Lavender Tower, surrounded by tombstones of all the defeated trainers. The player no longer has any Pokémon and moves very slowly. He eventually makes his way back to his house in Pallet Town, but no other NPCs or Pokémon are present, and the Lavender Town theme plays everywhere. Upon entering the house, the game cycles through the sprites of every Pokémon and trainer killed by Curse.

The screen then shifts to a battle, where the elderly player faces Ghost. The player cannot escape or use items and can only use Struggle. Ghost's attack simply displays "...". When the player's health drops low enough, Ghost uses Curse, and the game resets.

The player later tries multiple playthroughs with different approaches, including avoiding Ghost entirely, but each one ends the same way—with Ghost fighting and killing the player's character. Baffled and frustrated, he becomes obsessed with the game, eventually experiencing mental breakdowns as he tries to uncover its secrets.

Curse

Curse is the primary ability of Ghost. It allows one to fully kill a Pokemon or trainer when used, leaving no trace of them in the game.

Other

Standard Tactics: The Ghost will use Curse on anything it sees.

Weaknesses: For unknown reasons, its curse will sometimes fail against trainers[1]. Cannot use curse on unidentified ghost[1] but can use it on ghost type pokemon[1].

Trivia

  • Although the story has gained widespread recognition as a Creepypasta and has spawned numerous fan games, mods, and hacks, it remains unconfirmed whether Pokémon Black actually exists as a real game.
  • Internet personality Jon "JonTron" Jafri featured Pokémon Black as a joke during his episode on bootleg Pokémon games, describing it as "the one where Pokémon actually die instead of faint, and it has that version of Lavender Town that caused all those Japanese kids to become mysteriously ill." However, the latter detail actually originates from a separate Pokémon urban legend known as "Lavender Town Syndrome," which claimed that problematic audio frequencies in Lavender Town caused psychological reactions in headphone users. This legend is unrelated to the Pokémon Black story.
  • "Pokémon Creepy Black" was ranked #10 on Tats TopVideos' "Top 22 Gaming Creepypastas" list.
