Extrasensory Perception

From The Codex
(Redirected from Supernatural Perception)
Dragon Ball characters can sense ki signatures

Background

Extrasensory Perception (ESP), also known as the sixth sense, refers to the ability to detect and perceive energy, matter, or phenomena beyond the range of ordinary human senses. This includes detecting entities, forces, or objects that would otherwise go unnoticed, such as hidden presences or abnormal disturbances. The scope of ESP can vary greatly based on the user’s mastery of the ability and the type of energy or phenomenon being sensed. Highly skilled users can pinpoint minute energy signatures from vast distances, while less experienced users may only sense vague impressions within a limited range.

Also Called

  • Sixth Sense
  • Energy Detection
  • Metaphysical Perception
  • Aura Perception

Possible Applications

  • Precognition: The ability to sense or detect future events before they occur, allowing the user to prepare for or avoid impending dangers. This can range from subtle warnings to full visions of potential future outcomes.
  • Enhanced Sight: A specific application of ESP where the user augments their vision to detect energy traces, auras, or hidden disturbances that are typically invisible to ordinary sight.
  • Life Detection: The ability to sense living beings nearby, including their location and movement. This can extend to identifying different types of lifeforms, distinguishing between living and non-living entities, or detecting hidden or camouflaged beings.
  • Power Reading: A form of ESP that allows the user to sense the energy levels and specific abilities of others. This enables the detection of an opponent’s power, the identification of specific abilities, or finding exploitable weaknesses based on energy fluctuations.
  • Danger Sense: A heightened awareness of impending danger or harmful events, enabling the user to react or avoid threats before they manifest physically.
  • Spatial Awareness: A deep understanding of the user’s surroundings based on the detection of energy or matter within an area, which is useful for navigation and gaining an advantage in combat by recognizing terrain or hidden objects.
  • Emotional or Mental Perception: The ability to sense the emotional states or mental conditions of nearby individuals by interpreting energy fluctuations or auras, providing insights into intentions, feelings, or potential hostility.
  • Energy Source Location: The capacity to detect and track specific energy sources such as magical artifacts, weapons, or supernatural phenomena, even from vast distances.
  • Dimensional Awareness: The ability to detect anomalies in space-time, such as portals, rifts, or entities existing outside of conventional dimensions, through shifts in energy patterns or disturbances in the fabric of reality.

Practical Uses

  • Threat Detection: Enables the user to react preemptively to attacks or other dangerous situations by sensing potential hazards before they occur.
  • Tracking and Navigation: Used to locate hidden objects, individuals, or areas of interest by sensing their energy signatures.
  • Empathy and Social Interaction: Helps the user understand the emotions and intentions of others, aiding in negotiation, conflict resolution, or avoiding ambushes.
  • Battle Strategy: Provides a tactical advantage in combat by detecting subtle shifts in the environment or the presence of hidden enemies.
  • Artifact Search: Utilized to locate magical or energy-based artifacts, sometimes even across great distances.

Variations

  • Precognitive ESP: The ability to perceive future events or possible outcomes, aiding in decision-making and risk assessment.
  • Aura Perception: Sensing the energy fields around living beings, which can reveal emotions, physical states, or even powers.
  • Lifeform Detection: The ability to detect the presence of living creatures, even if they are concealed or disguised.
  • Energy Signature Detection: The perception of specific energy patterns, allowing the user to identify distinct sources or locate energy-based items.
  • Dimensional Perception: The ability to sense anomalies in space-time, such as portals or rifts.

Enhanced Senses

Although closely tied to ESP, Enhanced Senses specifically focus on amplifying the user's physical perception of their surroundings. While ESP can detect energy or forces beyond normal sensory limits, Enhanced Senses improve the natural faculties themselves—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch—enabling the user to perceive details or phenomena far beyond typical human limits. Enhanced Senses are generally physical in nature but can be used in conjunction with ESP to increase the user's overall awareness.

  • Enhanced Sight: Improved visual acuity, such as the ability to see in the dark, detect minute details, or even perceive different wavelengths of light like infrared or ultraviolet.
  • Enhanced Hearing: Amplified auditory perception, allowing the user to detect sounds at greater distances, hear at frequencies beyond human capabilities, or even interpret subtle vibrations in the environment.
  • Enhanced Smell: Heightened olfactory sensitivity, enabling the user to detect even the faintest of odors, or identify complex scent patterns.
  • Enhanced Touch: Increased tactile sensitivity, allowing the user to perceive the finest textures, temperature changes, or vibrations from even the smallest environmental shifts.
  • Enhanced Taste: Refined gustatory senses, granting the user the ability to distinguish between minute flavor differences, even identifying the exact ingredients in food.

Possible Limitations

  • Overload: Exposure to overwhelming or concentrated energy signatures can result in confusion, disorientation, or sensory overload, hindering the user's ability to function.
  • Invisibility: Some forms of concealment or invisibility can render energy signatures undetectable, limiting the effectiveness of ESP in certain situations.
  • Narrow Range: Some ESP users may be restricted to detecting specific types of energy or phenomena, while others may remain beyond their sensing range, making it difficult to perceive all threats or entities.
  • Dependency on Focus: Some users may struggle to filter out background noise or irrelevant data, making it challenging to focus on specific targets or events.

Users

  • Son Goku (Dragon Ball): Goku can sense Ki, allowing him to gauge the power and presence of others based on their energy signatures along with get an idea of how powerful they are.
