Background
Adrian Fahrenheit Țepeș, better known as Alucard, is the dhampir son of Dracula. While he debuted as a supporting character in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Alucard became widely known as the main protagonist of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
As the product of an unnatural union between Dracula and a human woman named Lisa, Adrian possesses extraordinary powers, destined to surpass human limitations but not quite rival his father. Raised under Dracula's influence, Adrian was trained in the dark arts and shaped into a warrior expected to fight for evil.
Adrian's human side, however, often conflicted with his father's teachings. At the time of Lisa's execution—mistakenly condemned as a witch—she implored Adrian not to seek revenge against humanity, emphasizing the struggles of their mortal lives. Her final words had a profound impact, leading Adrian to question his father's vendetta. After enduring his father's tyranny for as long as he could, Adrian broke away from Dracula's forces and vanished.
Fearing his father's wrath against humanity, Adrian vowed to oppose him. Taking on the name "Alucard"—Dracula spelled backward—he signified his opposition to his father’s ideals. Alucard began targeting Dracula's armies to disrupt his plans and challenge his ideology.
Alucard is a skilled swordsman, favoring one-handed blades in combat. He is also proficient in dark magic and possesses shapeshifting abilities, allowing him to transform into a bat, a wolf, or mist.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse After aiding in Dracula's destruction, Alucard was left with feelings of guilt for having participated in the act of patricide, despite his noble intentions. To cope with his inner turmoil, he chose to enter a deep slumber, sealing away his powers and isolating himself from the world. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night With the aid of Richter's relative, Maria Renard, Alucard uncovered the truth: the dark priest Shaft had enslaved Richter's mind as part of a scheme to resurrect Dracula. After freeing Richter from Shaft's control, Alucard ventured into an inverted version of Castlevania, which was populated by even more formidable foes. There, he confronted and defeated Shaft, putting an end to his immediate threat. However, Shaft's resurrection ritual had already succeeded, and Alucard faced his father in battle once more. In their confrontation, Alucard reminded Dracula of Lisa's final words: that humanity should be left in peace and that she would always love him. This revelation caused Dracula to briefly show a spark of humanity before Alucard ultimately defeated him and returned him to the grave. Following Dracula's defeat, Alucard intended to return to his slumber. However, Maria, who had grown deeply attached to him, resolved to persuade him to remain in the world of the living. Castlevania: Nocturne of Recollection During their conflict, Magnus revealed to Maria Alucard's dark past, including his consumption of human blood and the turning of his former servant, Lyudmil, into a vampire. When confronted by Maria about these claims, Alucard did not deny them, leaving the truth of his actions ambiguous. Magnus exploited Lyudmil's loyalty to Alucard and manipulated him into confronting his former master in battle. Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody Castlevania Judgment The version of Alucard drawn into the rift originates from a period following the events of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. At this time, he is focused on discovering a way to permanently destroy Dracula. After being pulled into the time rift, Alucard's resolve is to confront and defeat his father at the peak of his power. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow It is eventually revealed that Genya Arikado is, in fact, Alucard in disguise. This revelation is hinted at during a conversation between Soma and Yoko in the Study, although Yoko avoids explicitly mentioning his true identity. Julius Belmont was also present in the castle, but his amnesia and advanced age limited his involvement in direct confrontations. Alucard was aware that the seal holding Dracula’s power was weakening. He feared that if someone with malevolent intentions, such as Graham Jones, were to claim that power, it could lead to his father’s rebirth. To prevent this, Alucard devised a plan. He sought the person destined to inherit the Dark Lord’s powers and ensured that individual would be summoned to the castle on the day of the solar eclipse. This person was Soma Cruz. Alucard guided Soma in understanding his unique ability to absorb the souls of enemies, encouraging him to use this power to collect the essence of the castle's energy. Alucard believed that a self-aware absorber could use the gathered power to access the Chaotic Realm, a dimension where the broken seal remained. Only someone with Dracula's essence could enter this realm and destroy its source, thereby stabilizing the seal. After defeating Graham Jones, Soma realized he was the reincarnation of Dracula. Alucard instructed him to sever the flow of Chaos and suppress Dracula’s spirit before it could completely consume him. Soma succeeded in resealing the castle within the eclipse, saving his friends, and preventing Dracula’s resurrection for the foreseeable future. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow Their paths cross again in the Demon Guest House, where Arikado berates Soma for ignoring his warning and involving himself in the cult's schemes. However, acknowledging that Soma has already entered the castle, Arikado reluctantly agrees to his continued involvement. Soma informs him about Celia's plan to replace Soma with one of the Dark Lord's candidates, Dmitrii Blinov and Dario Bossi. Arikado promises to investigate further and gives Soma a letter from Mina containing a talisman to protect him from evil energies before departing to track Celia. Later, in the Cursed Clock Tower, Arikado arrives alongside Julius Belmont, only to encounter Celia, who reveals that she has fused a flame demon with Dario's soul, greatly amplifying his powers. After Celia teleports away, Arikado instructs Julius to pursue Dario while he focuses on finding Celia. A pivotal moment occurs in the Garden of Madness when Celia deceives Soma by slaying a Doppelganger disguised as Mina. The ruse nearly causes Soma to succumb to his dark nature and transform into the Dark Lord. However, Soma's talisman protects him, breaking the transformation. Celia's plan is further thwarted when the Doppelganger absorbs a black soul from Soma, transforming into Dmitrii, who had previously been presumed dead. Dmitrii reveals that he has copied Soma's power of dominance, making it the key to his ascension as the Dark Lord. Dmitrii also uncovers Arikado’s identity as Alucard, though he keeps this revelation ambiguous. Dmitrii and Celia flee to The Abyss, the source of the castle's dark energy. To access The Abyss, Arikado enlists Julius Belmont to shatter the barrier separating it from the rest of the castle. Despite Julius's reluctance, as breaking the barrier will deplete his strength, he complies, enabling Arikado to continue his pursuit of Dmitrii and Celia. In the final confrontation within The Abyss, Arikado confronts Dmitrii, only to find himself powerless due to Dmitrii's manipulation of Celia's sacrifice, which reversed his powers. Dmitrii's flawed dominance leads to his downfall, as the dark energy overwhelms him and merges into the monstrous Menace, Soma's final opponent. After Soma's victory, as others celebrate his triumph, Alucard remains introspective. He muses that if the world requires a Dark Lord, one will eventually emerge, even if it is not Soma. Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Enlisting the help of heroes throughout the grimoires Alucard and Lucy work to prevent Dracula's resurrection in modern day. |
Personality
- Suffering and Bitterness: Alucard appears to be a cool, reserved individual with a strong determination. However, this persona hides the deep suffering he endures because of his blood curse, forcing him to roam the world forever fighting. His curse was born from the tragic death of his mother, Lisa, at the hands of humans, which has led him to develop a profound bitterness toward mankind. Alucard feels isolated, and this bitterness shapes much of his actions, fueling his determination to defeat Dracula at any cost.
- Pessimism and Strategic Thinking: Alucard’s pessimistic outlook on life stems from the burden of his immortality and the pain of his past. He always plans for every eventuality, leaving nothing to chance. This meticulous nature reflects his resolve to destroy Dracula, regardless of the personal cost. Alucard's pessimism is often seen in his cold demeanor and the detached way in which he approaches situations, as he has little faith in humanity or the world around him.
- Isolation and Emotional Distance: Due to his vampiric nature, Alucard distances himself from others. He exiles himself in eternal sleep, choosing to remain dormant until his awakening in Symphony of the Night. His isolation is also a way of protecting others, as he feels his curse makes it impossible for him to form genuine human connections. Despite this, Alucard occasionally displays a sense of responsibility, taking on the role of a reluctant ally, particularly when circumstances force him into action, such as during Dracula's Curse.
- Sense of Responsibility and Indifference to Others: In Symphony of the Night, Alucard feels an overwhelming responsibility to confront and destroy Dracula, regardless of the consequences. His focus on defeating his father supersedes any concern for Richter’s possession or the well-being of others, as he remains indifferent to the plight of those around him. Alucard’s cold farewell to Richter and Maria at the end of Symphony of the Night shows his detached nature, as he chooses to pursue his own mission rather than foster connections with them.
- Vulnerability and Emotional Response: While Alucard forges few human attachments, there are moments where his emotions break through. Notably, when the Succubus impersonates his mother, Lisa, Alucard’s emotions flare, revealing how deeply he still feels the loss of her. This emotional vulnerability contrasts with his otherwise stoic nature and highlights the internal conflict he experiences. His determination to defeat Dracula is also a reflection of his unresolved grief and need for closure.
- Reluctant Confrontation with His Father: Alucard’s cold indifference toward his father contrasts with the emotional weight of their final battle. He does not hesitate to fight Dracula again, despite the deep emotional turmoil that the confrontation brings. The battle culminates in Dracula’s words echoing the sentiments once spoken by Lisa, Alucard’s mother, showing that the conflict is not just between father and son, but also tied to Alucard’s own unresolved pain.

- Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[127])
- Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[128]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[129], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[130])
- Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[131]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[132]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[133], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[134], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[135], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[136]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[137]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[138], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[139])
- Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[140])
- Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[141]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[142]).
- Resistance to
- Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[143]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[144])
- Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[145], with their souls being completely free from time[146]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[147], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[148]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[149])
- Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[150], with their souls being completely free from time[151], with fate being a truth wound by time[152])

Can shoot out 3 fire projectiles at once from his cape[505]. Can shoot out green fireballs everytime he jumps[506]. Devil Forging has one to giving it a shape and soul, giving it a shell and applying stable power to the shell so the mass of energy without conscious can be transformed into a living devil[525]), Blood Manipulation (Can spit out blood as an attack[526]. Can create spheres of blood from his attacks[527]. Causes an entire blood rain to fall, with over hundreds of droplets, where if even one hits, it will deal damage[528]), Soul Manipulation (Dracula can use soul steal, to steal one's soul, absorbing their entire existence within him[529]. Can disconnect his soul from his body[530]. God is unable to help the souls of those terminated by Dracula's hand[531]), Animal Manipulation (Can shoot bats out of his mouth[532]. Can shoot out three bats to attack[533]. Sends out bats to attack for him[534]), Mind Manipulation (Dracula put Soleil Belmont under his vampire spell[535]. The suppressed desires of Maxim Kischine caused another spirit to be created due to him holding the remains of Dracula[536]. Dracula's remains alone are enough to consume their mind, even being noted by Barlowe that dominus devours the mind[537]. Not even the sacred blood of the Belmont Clan was enough to keep Albus from subcumming to the effects of the Dominus[538]), Memory Manipulation (Accepting the Dominus interferes with one's memories and emotions[539]. Dominus was the source that took Shanoa's memories[540]. Dracula's magic showed Hector visions of his past with a form of his child self trying to convince him to become a devil and promising to be friends if he does so[541]), Empathic Manipulation (Accepting the Dominus interferes with one's memories and emotions, stripping Shanoa of all of her emotions to the point that she could not shed a tear for Albus despite everything he did for her[542]), Fear Manipulation (Dracula's mere rib bone is enough to make[543] an ordinary hero feel like a spineless coward[544]), Mortality Manipulation (Metaphysical; One attempting to use the Dominus will cost them their life, Shanoa using it nearly killed her only being saved by Albus taking her place and having his soul fade away[545]), Weather Manipulation & Electricity Manipulation (Caused dark clouds to appear and came from a bolt of lightning[546]. Sent out a massive electricity wave[550]. Creates massive electricity orbs from his glyphs[551]. Summoned electricity from his hand that went across a small area[552]. Electricity formed around him while he transformed into his adult state[553]. Easily pushed Cornell back with the electricity field around him[554]), Curse Manipulation (Dracula placed a curse on[555] Simon after Simon defeated him, one that could only be undone[556] by finding the five body parts of Dracula, resurrecting him and then defeating him[557], though if Simon takes too long he will die from the curse regardless of killing Dracula[558]. The Curse also weakened Simon to where he was starting off with a leather whip, which is a weaker form the whip takes for inexperienced users[559]. After being defeated by Trevor and his friends, Dracula left a demonic curse that enshrouded all of Europe in misery and torment[560], this curse keeps festering even if Dracula dies, where Hector needed to put all of his life-force and energy into dispelling the curse, greatly tiring him to the point that he was ready to die in the collapse of the Castle if Julia did not come rescue him[561]. Along with this, even with the curse being removed, the curse was far too deep within people, making its mark hard to leave them, with some characters having it where only death could erase the curse[562]), Disease Manipulation (The demonic curse caused a hideous plague and dire famine[563]), Morality Manipulation (The demonic curse had people's hearts turn black and murderous, where the weak were slain without pity[564]. The curse gave Hector an immense thirst for vegeance, attempting to make him kill Isaac so that he could possess his body[565]. Dracula can cloud one's senses in darkness, having the evil eat away at their souls[566]), Madness Manipulation (Barlowe was driven made by the power of Dominus, making him willing to give his life to resurrect Dracula[567]. Shanoa with the dominus is using a power of Dracula's[578], where Aeon notes that power is governed by time[579]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[580], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[581]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Vital Souls are all just a part of Dracula's powers[582], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[583] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[584], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[585], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[586], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[587], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[588]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[589]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[590], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[591]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[592]), Law Manipulation (Vital Souls are all just a part of Dracula's powers[593], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[594]), Power Modification (Vital Souls are all just a part of Dracula's powers[595], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[596]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[597]).

With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[607], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[608]), Sealing (Dracula's power allowed Soma to easily repel away a multi-layered seal called aurora a multilayered rectangular barrier ritual that was supposed to isolate Soma and then remove Dracula's powers from him[609]. Even while greatly weakened, when the Aurora was used on Dracula, he greatly resisted it, requiring two master magicians to affect him[610]. Dracula's power is so great that very few magical items can truly hold his magic within a seal, requiring the usage of an entire library worth of grimoires in order to truly seal away just his magic alone[611]. The only reason Brauner was able to seal away Dracula was due to him not reviving completely otherwise his seals would be easily broken by Dracula's power[612]), Fire Manipulation (Dracula is naturally strongly resistant to fire-based attacks[613]), Electricity Manipulation (Dracula is naturally strongly resistant to thunder based attacks[614]), Poison Manipulation (Dracula is naturally immune to poison based attacks[615]), Spatial Manipulation (Brauner using Dracula's power spatially segregated Dracula from the castle[616]), Soul Manipulation (Dracula's soul was put in a vessel, yet despite many organizations efforts, their glyphs couldn't even scratch him[617]), Power Modification, Information Manipulation, Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Dracula's magic and powers have no limits posed on it from the grimoires where heroes summoned from the catalogue are unable to stray too far from its contents and have limited actions they can do having summoned heroes have their powers greatly limited from their true strength[618]), Fate Manipulation & Mortality Manipulation (Death serves Dracula with unfailing loyalty[619], where Death is noted to govern the fate of death[620], being noted to have the power to govern the end of all living things[621], and can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[622]. Death decides who lives and who dies[623]), Immortality Negation (The Vampire Killer is unable to strip Dracula of his immortality whereas the Vampire Killer can render immortal skeleton death gods like Death, mortal, having him bleed from attacks, giving him mortality as shown when Death dies to his own scythe cutting off his head and having blood spurt out, something not possible as a skeleton[624], and can kill Death to the point that he requires Mathias to survive in order for him to rise from the dead[625])

Bat

The Bat Familiar will attack enemies, and as Alucard levels up the Bat’s attack will become stronger. Also when Alucard morphs into a Bat, another Bat will show up after you level up, and eventually Alucard will have several Bats following him around when he morphs. The Bat Familiars will also shoot a fireball when the Alucard morphed bat shoots one.
To obtain the Bat Familiar you need the Bat Card, located in the Alchemy Laboratory.
Demon

The Demon Familiar pushes buttons in walls that Alucard cannot reach, which will open up new areas in the Abandoned Mine and Cave. As you level up the Demon will be equipped with Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Lightning Spears.
To obtain the Demon Familiar you need the Demon Card, located in the Abandoned Mine.
Faerie

The primary use of the Faerie Familiar is for healing, but she also points out entrances to hidden rooms, and gives Alucard advice on getting through certain difficult areas of the castle. She will help Alucard when poisoned or turned to stone.
To obtain the Faerie Familiar you need the Faerie Card, located in the Long Library.
Ghost

The Ghost Familiar will aggravate and hold back enemies, and will help out more when leveling up. After it gets stronger it has the ability to Soul Steal, and also can drain enemies HP and give the HP to Alucard.
To obtain the Ghost Familiar you need the Ghost Card, located in the Castle Keep.
Sword

The strongest of the group, the Sword Familiar can provide powerful attacks but is rather slow at first. When reaching level 50 it can be used as a weapon.
To obtain the Sword Familiar you need the Sword Card, located in Olrox’s Quarters.
Notable Techniques
- Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[890] regenerate[891], from any kind[892] of damage due to it absorbing blood[893].
- Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
- Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
- Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.

Neutral Combo

Alucard begins his combo with a fast horizontal sword swipe from left to right, then quickly follows with an upward diagonal swing to the left. He then performs another horizontal strike to the right, then jumps into the air while swinging his sword upward in a vertical motion. The combo ends with a swift downward slash aimed at the enemy below.
Directional Combo

Alucard swings his sword in a wide, sweeping motion from one side to the other, making sure to cover a large area. He then leaps high into the air and swings his sword upward, delivering a powerful strike that knocks any enemy in the way. As he descends, he swings his sword in a wide overhead arc, delivering a final blow to any enemies below him as he lands.
Jumping Attack

While leaping through the air, Alucard swings his sword in a graceful upward arc. He begins the motion from behind his body, moving it forward and upward, before finishing the strike above him. This allows Alucard to strike enemies both in front of him and overhead.
Dodge

Summon Spirit

Alucard summons a dark, purplish-black spirit from his hand, which arcs gracefully upward toward his target. The spirit seeks out any nearby enemies, striking them with its ethereal force.
Tetra Spirit

Alucard plants his hand firmly on the ground and shouts either "Devour them!" or "Take this!" He calls forth four spirits from the earth that stay close to the ground, awaiting to lock onto a nearby enemy. Once locked on, the spirits rush toward the target, dealing damage as they go. If Alucard is airborne during the casting, the spirits appear in front of him, hovering until they detect a nearby enemy, at which point they will move toward the target.
Wing Smash

With a commanding shout of "No escape!", Alucard sprouts bat wings and swiftly glides forward. During this high-speed glide, he swings his sword powerfully, knocking any enemy in his path to the ground with a single, devastating strike.
Dark Lightning

While suspended in the air, Alucard summons dark lightning that strikes downward from his position. The dark lightning arcs toward the enemy’s location on the ground, dealing massive electrical damage upon impact.
Summon Sword Familiar

Alucard summons a magic circle beneath a nearby target, from which a sword familiar emerges. The familiar rises from below, attacking its target with swift sword strikes from beneath, dealing significant damage as it continues its assault.
Form of Mist

Alucard transforms his body into mist, becoming intangible. As mist, he is able to glide in the direction the analog pad is facing. If the analog pad is left neutral, Alucard will move toward the opposite side of his opponent, allowing him to quickly reposition or pass through obstacles.
Infernal Blade

Alucard cries out "Now!" and performs a powerful Wing Smash, sending his opponent soaring. If the strike lands successfully, Alucard transports the enemy to another dimension. He plants his sword into the ground, igniting it in flames. His wings grow massive as he charges at the opponent, striking them with his fiery sword, sending them flying upward. As Alucard backflips in the air, he launches himself from a magical circle and charges downward with another fierce attack. With a final, powerful strike, he declares, "It's over!" and his opponent is engulfed in flames. As Alucard lands, he says "Burn away!" as the opponent is consumed by fire.
Other
Standard Tactics: Alucard has notably utilized various weapons in combat that best suit the situation along with notably using Soul Steal against multiple targets at once, even in his suppressed Genya Arikado form. Along with this Alucard has a variety of different items, attack items, sub-weapons, and magic he uses that best suit the situation.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[894]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[895], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[896]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[897].
- Standard Vampire Weaknesses: After a vampire is sufficiently weakened, the sunlight can kill them[898]. Otherwise Vampires can stand out in the sunlight just fine[899]. Though some weaker vampires can have the sun burn them overtime, killing them[900]. Oak Stakes are able to break through the magic of a weakened vampire[901]. Defeating a vampire will stop the effects of someone they have bitten, but only before they've turned[902]. This is shown in Harmony of Dissonance where through Juste killing Dracula's Wraith, the bite marks on Lydie have vanished[903]. Vampires reflections do not appear on mirrors, making them easier to identify[904]. Vampires are noted to be weak during the dawn[905].
- Magic Weaknesses: Summoning items and weapons inscribed in grimoires takes a lot of magic[906].
- Unique Weaknesses: If Alucard dies, his human side will be gone and he will fully transform into a vampire, becoming essentially a second Dracula[907]. If Alucard taste human blood, he will have a hard time controlling his desires[908].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[909]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[910], a knight who has natural holy powers[911]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[912]. Characters like Jonathan Morris wear armor like the Holy Mail, an armor that reduces damage from holy attacks[913].
- The Sky Fish feat moving so fast that it appears as a beam of light and only slows once time is stopped[914] is a natural indication of Faster Than Light travel as at the speed of light, time is zero from its perspective. Soma Cruz having a hard time catching up with it initially does not mess with his scaling either as we know it's an unquantifiable level into Faster than Light at the most.
- While vampires have some weakness to sunlight and can burn overtime in them[915], higher tier vampires[916], can stand out in the sunlight just fine[917] without being weakened. It should also be noted even with Dhamphir's like Alucard, in original lore, he was considered a full vampire yet could stand out in the sunlight perfectly fine.
- Alucard's Genya Arikado form is a form he uses to suppress his powers[918], going back into his true self is him transforming to "draw out my full power"[919].
Explanation
Usage of games like Castlevania Legends & Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Castlevania Legends
The game was originally meant to be a prequel to all the other games in the Castlevania series, this can be seen with Sonia's boss fight against Dracula serving as the first time Dracula ever encountered a Belmont along with the ending of the game saying "this story marks the beginning of the Belmont family legend that has been passed on through many ages". Along with this, Sonia shared a relationship with Alucard, heavily implying that her child is between her and Alucard. The existence of Lament of Innocence already greatly messes with this. The game manual even mentions that Sonia was the first of the Belmont family to leave her name to posterity as a vampire hunter[920]. Despite Leon Belmont being the one to start the legend of the Belmont Hunters being vampire hunters. Along with this, Trevor is canonically the first Belmont to defeat Dracula. Iga has gone out of his way to note too that Castlevania Legends was intentionally redacted from the timeline so that it doesn't conflict with the timing used in other titles.
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Although it was in the original 2006 timeline, it was removed by Iga from the timeline, along with Castlevania (N64), Legacy of Darkness, and Legends.
Why abilities from them are still usable for main timeline
These games were at one point officially a part of the original timeline before ultimately being removed, making them hypotheticals that could be done. This is further supported by an interview in the History of Castlevania - Crescent of the Moon book, where executive producer of Castlevania Netflix Adi Shankar noted that even the "non-canon" games are parallel timelines in the overall multiverse, sharing the same spirit and lore[921]. While one could argue his statement shouldn't be used, it comes from a book titled, "History of Castlevania - Crescent of the Moon", where it wouldn't make much sense if his statement was wrong and there was no correction over it. The book even has asterisks to give further context, yet they never claim him wrong. Along with this, it's consistent with the fact that most of the Castlevania games that are "non-canon" now were originally a part of the timeline. Thus this statement is usable. Thus abilities and the likes from these games can carry over to the main timeline games.
Trivia
- The name "Alucard" is "Dracula" spelled backward, which is likely an analogy for being Dracula's rebel son.
- The name "Alucard" originates from the 1943 Universal horror film Son of Dracula. In the film, Count Alucard initially poses as Dracula's son, although it is later revealed to be Dracula himself. Despite later employments of the name being used to avoid notice, in this film, every character he meets immediately deduces the connection, but still believe his claim of being Dracula's son.
- Țepeș is not actually a surname, but rather an epithet meaning "impaler" (as in "Vlad the Impaler"). Nonetheless, it is treated as Alucard's surname.
- Originally, in the Japanese version of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Alucard was a vampire, due to his father selling his soul to the Devil in order to gain more power.[922] However, this was later retconned with Symphony of the Night's addition of Lisa to the storyline, making Alucard into a dhampir from birth.
- In the Japanese version of Symphony of the Night, when telling his father what Lisa's last words were, Alucard states them in a manner indicating he was holding back tears from recalling them.
- According to Koji Igarashi, Alucard can use holy sub-weapons without harm because Lisa was a descendant of a "holy bloodline".
- According to Tōru Hagihara, Alucard was supposed to have an "alignment system" in Symphony of the Night. Using the sub-weapons a lot would have given him a holy alignment, and using magic a lot would have given him a dark alignment.
- Alucard's quote in the American version of Symphony of the Night, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing", comes from the Irish philosopher Edmund Burke.
- In Dawn of Sorrow, when playing as Alucard in Julius Mode, he does not project his reflection on mirrors as the other characters do. This is in reference to the legend that says that vampires don't reflect their image on mirrors. However, some sources state that dhampirs, unlike vampires, indeed cast their reflection on mirrors and other reflective surfaces.
- This is particularly the case in the animated series. In the "Shadow Battles" episode, when Alucard contemplates skulls of vampires behind a showcase, his reflection can be seen.
- Alucard's voice actor in the Japanese version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Ryōtarō Okiayu, also voiced Trevor Belmont in the animated series.
- Although Sephiroth facing Dracula in his Classic Mode path in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was overall a reference to their respective status as final bosses in their games, it ironically enough also resembles how Alucard faced off against Dracula in both Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Symphony of the Night.
- "有角" literally means "having horns", possibly clues in to Alucard's dark heritage. "幻", which may refer to "mirage" or "illusion", could mean that this identity is just a facade. Also, "Arikado" is a pun that sounds like Alucard through Japanese pronunciation (Arukādo).
- In the opening of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Arikado can be seen destroying multiple enemies with a magical attack. This is presumably Alucard's Soul Steal spell.
- While under this persona, Arikado's hair is black. This is most likely the work of his magic power, as when playing Julius Mode in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, which takes place soon after Soma embraces the role of Dark Lord, Alucard is encountered with his usual blond/platinum hair.
- Ironically, Arikado's black hair has him resembling his father's original identity, Mathias Cronqvist.
- Early concept artwork for Alucard in Symphony of the Night depicted him with similar black hair.
- Genya Arikado is alluded to in Alucard's ending in Castlevania Judgment.
- Based on his first meeting with her in Grimoire of Souls, Genya Arikado had not even been aware of Charlotte Aulin's existence until Lucy Westenra summoned her.
- Castlevania Legends takes place in an alternate universe, different to the main Castlevania timeline.
Misconceptions
"Gaiden" means "Non-Canon" or "Alternate Timeline"
This stems from the belief that when Iga or a producer calls a Castlevania game a "Gaiden" it is therefore non-canon or an alternate timeline and can be dismissed. This, however, is not the case.
The term "Gaiden" merely just means a side story, spin-off, or a separate tale. The term "Gaiden" does not determine the canonicity of a work, it just lets you know if the game is a spin-off/side-story or if it's a main story. Take, for instance, the Kingdom Hearts series. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories would be considered a gaiden, as it's a side-story and spin-off title that isn't a mainline numbered title, however, it is in all manners canon and important to play to understand Kingdom Hearts II.
The same can be applied to Castlevania itself, Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a gaiden game. Yet it is very obviously canon and pretty important to play to understand more of Alucard's backstory. The idea of a Gaiden game for the Castlevania series itself would be any game not dealing with one of Dracula's main 100-year-resurrections, which in this case, even Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest is in a way a gaiden, despite being completely canon.
This is all to say that Gaiden does not at all mean "non-canon" or "alternate timeline" and should never be treated as such, the term itself has nothing to do with the canonicity of a product.
IGA Statements Quoted by a Fan
Any statements Iga has made about Judgment that don't come from this IGN interview or a sourced and reputable article are not usable. This is, of course, referring to the popular statements used when discussing Judgment's Canoncity about a fan asking IGA about the game's Canoncity on Facebook, here are some of them below:
- Fan: You mentioned Legend of Cornell was an alternate continuity. However, Cornell appears in Castlevania Judgment, which I believe is not an alternate continuity. How does that work? is he from a different universe than the other characters? It is not really explained in the game itself so I was hoping you could give some clarification on the issue.
- IGA: Judgment is a work that surpasses space and time and brings them together.
- Fan: I get it. So, is the explanation I suggested in the previous reply possibly correct?
- IGA: I don't think it's exactly correct. Judgment is a work born of thinking it would be fun to remove all the hedges and bring characters that appeared throughout the series together. I think that you need to view it as an event from another world which does not consider things like timelines or parallel dimensions at all.
Now these seem like pretty clear-cut statements until you start to try to find where these come from.
They come from both a timeline archive discussion on the Castlevania Wiki back on January 15th, 2012 and from a forum post from the same user as the wiki article.
There is no way to find anything sourced or verifiably proven that this person spoke to Iga. Trying to look up the person didn't get any real results either.
Some other issues fall under the inconsistencies within these Iga talks, the person claims that Iga confirmed that Order of Shadows and the Arcade are non-canon because they were intended from the very beginning to be such, however, an officially sourced interview has the lead game designer of Order of Shadows state that Iga was actively involved with ensuring the game was consistent with the current canon, this would be a weird thing to do if he intended it to be non-canon from the very beginning.
He also claims that Iga said Super Castlevania IV was an alternate continuity, when the wiki also notes Iga saying that the games are all legitimate and the same scenario of defeating Dracula, however this quote is also unsourced, they just claim Iga says this with no link or anything.
There is another one not related to the user who spoke to Iga, but a user on reddit who claimed that a magazine claimed that Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was stated to be in a "different time axis". Attempting to get it translated got no wording that said anything like that, with it not even mentioning anything about canon, timeline, time axis, or any other wording of the sort in a machine-translated attempt. Do note however that this is a machine translation so it could potentially be that it is there, but until a reputable and verifiable translator can confirm or deny this translation, the jury is out with it and it will not be used for the canoncity of Circle of the Moon.
Thus all of these quotes are merely hearsay until shown or proven otherwise.
Remakes/Remasters Being Non-Canon
This comes from an Iga quote that says:
- "IGA: FC版とX68000版ですが、X68000版はFC版をベースにアレンジを加えたものになっています。ゲームのアレンジは、その時に応じて、色々と施されるものですので、正直どちらも正統であると思ってよいのではないかと思っています。結論として、ドラキュラと戦い勝つというシナリオで、中間部分の切り抜きが違うと考えてもよいのではないかと考えています。スーパーファミコン版も違いますし…。どうしてもと考えるのであれば、FC版を尊重すべきかと考えます。
- Translation: Regarding the Famicom version and the X68000 version, the X68000 version is an arrangement based on the Famicom version. The arrangement of a game is the kind of thing where you add a lot of different things as needed, so honestly speaking, it think they both should be considered legitimate. In conclusion, I think they should be considered as the same scenario of fighting to defeat Dracula, just with a different middle part. The Super Famicom version is different as well... If you simply must have a clear answer, the Famicom version must be given deference."
Now the quote itself doesn't state remakes or remasters are non-canon despite what people believe. It's moreso a quote of Iga stating that all of them are the same scenario, just with differences. However, an interesting point is that Iga says the NES version should be given "deference", as in to defer to the NES version.
Of course, though, this has the same issue as the Judgment quotes, everyone claims Iga said this, but there is no source of him saying this. In fact, in Castlevania Chronicles, there's a reward interview you receive from Iga himself where he talks about the game, Iga pretty much explains how the game came to be and never says anything about the game not being canon or to defer to the original[923], if anything he treats this as just an updated version of the original. Interestingly to note too, the original he's talking about is not Castlevania on NES but instead, he's talking about the computer version of Castlevania[924], though it borrows a lot of elements from Castlevania NES.
Overall due to the quote itself having no source, it is unusable. The way we will treat remakes, remasters, or ports here however is that they are all equally canon unless stated otherwise. Most of these tell the same story with the only real differences being extra background information added, such as Haunted Castle having it be Dracula stole Simon's wife, though the same overall story still applies even here. Iga himself has already expressed that the original Castlevania's story is pretty simple[925] and Simon having a wife does not affect anything in the overall narrative. Super Castlevania IV notes that Simon is a vampire, though this was due to a novel writer making him a vampire in their novel. The novel was originally supposed to be an adaptation of Super Castlevania IV but was then dropped and made its own thing. Super Castlevania IV itself is still canon, but the subplot of Simon being a vampire is not. The most recent timeline even acknowledges it as canon[926].
Iga Only Allows Stuff He Works on To Be Canon
There is a weirdly believed idea in the fandom that Iga only considers works he worked on canon, however, an officially sourced interview has the lead game designer of Order of Shadows state that Iga was actively involved with ensuring the game was consistent with the current canon, along with this Iga did not work on a lot of Castlevania games considered canon, such as the NES trilogy and the Gameboy games. In fact, he has only made 12 Castlevania games, out of the 30 Castlevania games in total, and most of them from the older console eras are still a part of the canon. Thus Iga does not only allow stuff he works on to be canon.
Iga is a Producer of Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
A Nintendo Power magazine calls Iga the producer of Circle of the Moon, with Iga talking like he worked on the game in that interview. However Iga can be found nowhere in the credits of the game. Making this Nintendo Power issue questionable as to if they were talking to Iga or if the game was mixed up. Though we have direct in-game proof that Iga was not a producer of Circle of the Moon.
Elements and Statements can be used from Lords of Shadows for the main continuity
This argument comes from Adi Shankar saying that even "non-canon" games are parallel timelines in the overall multiverse, sharing the same spirit and lore[927]. However, the Lord of Shadow games are directly noted in an interview with the lead developer, that the game has nothing to do with the canon, sharing none of the lore or original stuff for the characters. This directly conflicts with Adi Shankar's statement and it was very likely he was not even thinking of Lords of Shadows when making this statement but moreso games like Castlevania Legends. On top of this, Adi Shankar has no actual position within Konami, and being an executive producer for the Castlevania anime, thus he does not have any true say in terms of how Castlevania canon works and can only be used at most as a supporting piece of evidence.
Codex Statistics Questions
Q: Shouldn't the characters be around Tier 2 for defeating the Time Reaper who would've destroyed the very fabric of time[928], attempted to destroy the specific era of time[929], cause all beings everywhere to disappear, forever[930] and that the age was on the verge of collapse[931]?
A: We actually never get a direct outright method of Time Reaper's plan for doing this, from what Aeon mentions to Golem, if the Time Rift is not erased, all beings everywhere will disappear, forever[932], implying that it's the Time Rift causing this, this is further backed up by the fact that in Time Reaper's boss fight, there is a vortex in the background consuming everything[933], meaning this is an overtime feat that scales to no one physically.
Q: Shouldn't they get tier 2 for Dracula's influence destabilizing the flow of time[934]?
A: This is a potent ability but has nothing to do with Attack Potency, there is no quantification for "destabilizing the flow of time", along with this, even if it was taken as physically, then it would be overtime as the effects are not noticeable throughout most of Curse of Darkness. Thus this is merely potent Time Manipulation.
Q: Shouldn't Dracula and by proxy anyone that scales to him get tier 2 for him being able to sustain his castle?
A: This goes under our Stabilization Feats standards, which treats sustaining feats are non-combat applicable Attack Potency normally, though in Dracula's case the Castle is speficially powered by the existence of a Dark Lord, and doesn't necessarily need their strength to rise. In the Castlevania novel, the castle rose without a Dark Lord as an example. Along with this, no one scales to the collapse of the castle, in Curse of Darkness Hector would've died to the collapse of the castle if[935] Julia didn't come save him, and Isaac died within the castle[936]. In other cases the Castle does not collapse[937], but instead slowly fades away[938]. At the end of Dawn of Sorrow Soma Cruz and Genya Arikado (aka Alucard) must escape the collapsing abyss.
Q: Shouldn't Castlevania characters that scale to Death have Infinite speed due to Death being able to kill distance itself with his attacks?
A: Killing distance to attack is not a speed feat, it's a method of Spatial Manipulation by circumventing and ignoring distance, while one can say the attack spawns on you instantly, this is not really something quantifiable. Along with this, it would only scale to characters comparable to Death during post-Dawn of Sorrow, as Soma notes Death is far faster than he remembered from his fight with him in Dawn of Sorrow[939].
