User:Geo GeoZ/Eva Calcs 3.0

From The Codex

Another calc for the Lance of Longinus, the true god-tier of Eva. I hope you're proud Anno.

Rei grabs the Lance of Longinus and tosses it into space, splitting a huge section of the clouds in the sky. Re-calcing this feat as the previous calc on the OBD compared the volume split to the Japanese islands we see in the shot, despite the curvature of the earth being visible in the background and the fact that Eva has some weird landscapes to due to the lore. It also doesn't use full res images, which actually does slightly change the results.

Apologies for the images being so small, just click on them for full size. Anyways, we can just draw an ellipse around the shot to try and approximate the Earth's size here. Quick note, yes, I'm aware the shape isn't perfect. I spent a literal hour just trying out different shapes across different resolutions just to see which one would work, and this was the only shape that ended up matching both where the curve starts and ends while also somewhat resembling the shape of the Earth. IRL Earth is flattened out slightly at the poles, so this shape matches up better than you might think, and the curve in the shot is so wonky it's impossible to get a fully accurate shape anyways. If you're that concerned, note that this shape is sorta low-balling, since it extends slightly above where the curve actually goes meaning the pixel:real size ratio is smaller.

Anyways, diameter of the earth in this shot = 6750 px

Radius = 3375 px

Radius of Earth = 6371 km

1 px = 1.8877037037 km

Another note, before you ask, yes I did factor in the diameter line extending slightly above the ellipse. I measured the pixel count from the two points where it touched the shape to eliminate any chance of that changing the result.

Diameter of cloud split = 2545 px = 4804.20592593 km

Radius = 2402.10296296 km = 2402102.96296 m

This scene happened during a very heavy rainstorm, and the clouds appear as a very distinctly dark grey from the ground, so they're likely cumulus clouds, which have thickness ranging from 8000-11000m

Low-end (8000 meters):

8000 meters = 8 km

Total volume of cylinder = pi*2402.10296296^2*8 = 145000000 km^3

Ah, but there's a catch. If you look a few frames earlier, there's a section of the sky that's already clear, that we have to subtract from the total volume. Luckily, the curvature remains the exact same, so as long as we makes sure the canvases are the same size we can use our current px:km ratio.

Shape is rectangular

Length = 326 px = 615.391407407 km

Width = 462 px = 872.119111111 km

Volume of already clear space = 872.11911111*615.391407407*8 = 4293556.85771 km^3

Subtract that and the total actual volume of clouds cleared =140706443.142 km^3 = 140706443142000000 m^3

Density of clouds = 1.003 kg/m^3

Mass of clouds dispersed = 141128560000000000 kg

Now for speed. Luckily, I have a 24 fps high res version of the series readily available to me. The scene takes 58 frames total, so 2.41666666667 seconds

Speed = 2402102.96296/2.41666666667 = 993973.639844 m/s

Plug that into a simple KE calculator, you get 69716351153279632649384541918 joules or 16.662607828221898 exatons, Multi-continent level+

Juuuuust shy of moon level.

High-end (11000 meters):

11000 m = 11 km

Just substitute in 8 for 11 then, giving 199000000 km^3 for volume

5903640.67934 km^3 of clear space

Which means total volume of clouds dispersed is 193096359.321 km^3 or 193096359321000000 m^3

193096359321000000 m^3*1.003 kg/m^3 = 193675650000000000 kg

Plug that back into the KE calculator using our previously calculated speed

95674182640563203402137549309 joules or 22.866678451377695 exatons, Multi-continent level+

Again, just 7 exatons shy of moon level.

This scales to Awakened Unit-01 since it pretty much absorbed the Lance of Longinus. However, in End of Evangelion part 1, Asuka's Unit 02 tanks being struck by an identical copy of the Lance of Longinus packing this same sort of power, and her mech survives, only collapsing due to running out of power. That's impressive if you look at what it did to poor Arael. I also wouldn't say that's an outlier either, as it was explicitly Asuka fighting at her absolute peak with her highest synchronisation, which is why she wasn't that strong previously. If you accept that, I'd go ahead and place Awakened Unit-01 at "likely Moon level" considering it should be well over twice as strong as Unit-02.
