Youkai (also rendered as yōkai or 妖怪) is a class of supernatural creatures and spirits in Japanese folklore. The term encompasses a vast range of beings, including demons, ghosts, shapeshifters, and mischievous entities, varying greatly in appearance, behavior, and temperament. In modern fiction, Youkai frequently appear as characters in anime, manga, video games, and literature, often drawing from traditional folklore while introducing new interpretations and original creations.
