Background

Super Mario Brothers is a platformer game developed by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. It is primarily developed and published by Nintendo, but due to its immense popularity, many other developers such as AlphaDream, Next Level Games, Intelligent Systems, and many more developed most of the Mario spin-offs. While the series started as a 2D platforming franchise, it has since adapted itself into a massive number of popular genres of gaming such as racing, sports, turn-based RPG, party, and much more.

The series follows Mario, the main protagonist and playable character, and his longtime struggle to protect Princess Peach from Bowser, the principal antagonist of the series. The games typically follow the same formula with Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach and Mario needing to save her with a variety of power-ups and occasionally a companion who alters the gameplay. However, due to the series' massive popularity, new characters, artifacts, and locations have been introduced along with unique stories that differ from the standard plotlines of mainline Mario games.

Since the original Super Mario Bros. released in 1985, the series has grown with 21 Mario Brother games (As of January, 2021) across the main Nintendo consoles and a number of spin-offs. Several American animated television shows were made for the Mario series which aired as early as September of 1989, and an official manga series written by Yukio Sawada and published by Shogakukan, which is printed monthly by CoroCoro Comic. The Mario franchise is one of Nintendo's most prominent and successful franchises, selling over 360 million copies as of 2020 in the Super Mario Series alone; many of its games are considered by critics to be among the greatest games of all time.

Power of the Verse

The verse is very powerful with the main cast being Macrocosmic+, and having hax such as Wish Granting, Conceptual Manipulation, Sealing, Dimensional BFR, etcetera.

Terms

  • Power Star: A Power Star, also referred to as a Star, are collectible items within the various worlds Mario traverses that can grant him access to other worlds in the various platforming games (Such as unlocking paintings in Mario 64, or granting access to far away galaxies in Super Mario Galaxy), unlike the similar-looking Super Stars, which only give brief invincibility. In Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey, Power Stars play a central role within these stories due to having potent abilities with devastating destructive power such as realm creation, distorting the laws of the universe, powering advanced technology, and much more. As of now, Power Stars are owned by a variety of characters due to their vast quantity and presence across the Mario universe and are even used by cities such as New Donk City to power it. However, only a few can use the full potential of the Power Stars such as bowser who commonly exploits their power to his own advantage.
  • Grand Star: A Grand Star is a far stronger version of the standard Power Star that has far more potent abilities. They were used primarily in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 as Bowser's ultimate weapon to rule the universe. Due to Mario stopping Bowser however, the single Grand Star Bowser had created a supermassive black hole twice which resulted in the destruction and reset of the entire universe the first time. Mario was able to revert the effects a second time in SMG2 however. As of now, they are primarily used by Rosalina to traverse the cosmos and watch over the universe and have not been used since other than a final smash in Super Smash Bros.
  • Star Road: Star Road (Name varies across games) is a location where the dreams of all the Mushroom Kingdom citizens manifest into stars within the night sky. These stars however can grant the wish of a strong-willed citizen to benefit them greatly. Even a simple goomba with a strong enough will can accomplish tasks that were otherwise impossible for them with a single wish. Star Road is protected by guardians like Geno who alludes to a higher authority that governs the rules of Star Road. Little else is known about the ones behind Star Road's existence, however other beings such as the Star Spirits have also created a source for wishing power in the form of the Star Rod which likely means they could be responsible for the existence of Star Road.
  • Paint: Paint was a mechanic introduced in Paper Mario Color Splash, and is a universal concept that encompasses everything within the Mario universe. Without Paint, nothing functions as it should such as holds in the ground, water flowing down a slope, citizens thinking, breathing, and interacting with the world around them, etcetera. This is important because characters like Mario can directly manipulate paint in a variety of ways to help them in combat. Even standard minions such as Shy Guys are capable of drinking paint from the environment around them.

Verse Scaling

Each of the Star Children, and similarly strong foes, scale to Mario, who upscales from Power Stars which can create universes. Those with the Purity Heart or Chaos Heart scale above the Void which had the power to destroy all worlds along with several statements of the Chaos Heart recreating all worlds, both of which the Purity Heart could revert. Characters such as minions in Bowser's army scale to Bob-Ombs launching Mario to the moon.
