Background

Damage Manipulation is the ability to manipulate the forms of damage one takes, whether physical, spiritual, mental, etc. This differs from Pain Manipulation, as Damage Manipulation focuses on the actual damage itself rather than just the experience of pain. Additionally, unlike Pain Manipulation, Damage Manipulation can affect inorganic targets, since it is not tied to biological processes.

Applications

Damage Manipulation encompasses various methods for dealing with or modifying damage. Below are general applications not tied to specific abilities:

  • Direct Damage Creation: The user can generate damage in various forms, such as physical or mental damage, which can be inflicted on opponents or oneself. The damage may appear suddenly or through a targeted effect, depending on the user's control over the ability.
  • Damage Absorption and Reflection: Some users of Damage Manipulation can absorb damage from attacks and either reduce or reflect the damage back at the source. This typically involves using one’s own body or external tools (like armor or shields) to handle incoming damage.
  • Damage Enhancement or Intensification: The user can enhance the damage dealt by an attack, making it significantly more harmful than it would otherwise be. This can apply to both physical strikes and non-physical damage (e.g., mental or spiritual damage).
  • Damage Healing or Nullification: In some cases, users can reduce or nullify the damage they would normally take, making them resistant or immune to certain forms of attack.
  • Delayed Damage Infliction: The user can trigger damage effects at a later time. For example, an attack might cause harm immediately, or it might leave behind a lingering effect that causes damage after a set period.
  • Damage Over Time: The user can induce damage that builds up over time. This could take the form of continuous pain, poison, or some other damage source that doesn't stop once it's inflicted.
  • Damage Distribution: The user can distribute the damage they take or inflict among multiple targets. This allows them to share the effects of damage in ways that can prevent one person from taking the brunt of it.
  • Environmental Damage: The user can cause damage through their surroundings, such as manipulating the environment to create hazards (e.g., damaging terrain, toxic air, etc.) that affect their target.
  • Psychic or Emotional Damage: The user can inflict mental or emotional harm, causing psychological damage that could weaken or incapacitate the target without physically touching them.
  • Damage Prevention: Some users may manipulate damage in a way that prevents others from taking damage at all, whether it’s creating a protective barrier or negating incoming attacks.
  • Damage Enhancement through Weaknesses: The user may exploit an enemy's weakness, allowing their attacks to deal more damage than usual when targeting vulnerable areas or exploiting specific flaws.

Possible Limitations

  • Limited Control Over Damage Type: Some users may have trouble controlling the specific type of damage they inflict (e.g., physical, mental, or spiritual). They may only be able to manipulate certain types of damage or struggle to apply it consistently.
  • Damage Recoil: In some cases, using Damage Manipulation may come with a cost, such as recoil damage. The user may experience backlash or self-inflicted harm when manipulating or transferring damage, making it a double-edged sword.
  • Short Range or Target Limitation: Some forms of Damage Manipulation may only work within a limited range or require direct contact with the target. This can restrict the user’s ability to influence damage at a distance or in more complex combat situations.
  • Requires Knowledge of Target's Weaknesses: For users who manipulate damage by exploiting weaknesses, they may need to be aware of the target’s specific vulnerabilities. Without this knowledge, the ability may be less effective or fail to cause significant harm.
  • Vulnerable to Damage Immunity or Resistance: Certain opponents may be immune or highly resistant to the type of damage the user is manipulating. This can render the ability ineffective against certain enemies or in specific environments.
  • Limited by User’s Endurance: In some cases, the user may be unable to continuously manipulate damage for extended periods, especially if the ability is physically or mentally taxing. The user’s own stamina and energy levels may determine how often or how effectively they can utilize the power.
  • Damage Manipulation Reversal: Some individuals or entities may possess the ability to reverse or reflect damage manipulation. This could cause the user’s efforts to backfire, resulting in unintended harm or weakening the user instead.
  • Environmental Factors: The effectiveness of Damage Manipulation may be influenced by the environment. For example, suppose the surroundings are resistant to damage or possess some protective feature (e.g., magic shields, armor, or defensive fields). In that case, the user’s ability may be nullified or reduced in effectiveness.
  • Moral Dilemmas and Mental Strain: If the user can inflict mental or emotional damage, the toll on their psyche might lead to mental strain, guilt, or instability. Inflicting such damage may have negative psychological consequences, especially for empathetic individuals.

For more detailed information on the specific sub-abilities related to Damage Manipulation, you can navigate to the following pages:

Damage Inducement

Damage Inducement allows the user to induce damage on someone through normally unexplainable means. This often involves dealing damage without physical contact or manipulating mental damage.

User

Set Damage

Set Damage ensures that the user's attacks always inflict a fixed amount of damage, regardless of the opponent's defenses or stats. This can make it especially useful against enemies of all levels or durability.

User

Damage Transferal

Damage Transferal allows the user to transfer the damage they’ve sustained to another individual. This can apply to any form of damage—physical, mental, spiritual, or supernatural.

User

Damage Reduction

X's armor is made to reduce 93 percent of damage taken to him

Damage Reduction is the ability to decrease and reduce the damage the target takes, making them more resilient and harder to defeat.

Applications

  • Armor-Based Damage Reduction: In some RPG games, armor reduces the damage taken rather than increasing defense.
  • Extra Hit-Based Damage Reduction: Some abilities allow users to take an extra hit without being harmed, regardless of the attack’s strength.

Users

  • Mega Man X (Mega Man X): Mega Man X's Armor is made to reduce 93% of the damage taken to him.
  • PSI Users (MOTHER Series): PSI Users are able to conjure shields that reduce the amount of damage taken during battle.
