Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Girl’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Girl is the name of the central protagonist of the game Cat in the Box. Presumably set in either the 2010s or 2020s, Girl sets off to a mansion far into the mountains to record an exploration video of the abandoned mansion for her YouTube channel. Motivated by the low viewership on her last video, she breaks into the mansion grounds using a bolt cutter as she believes that recording inside the mansion will cause her to go viral and gain traction to becoming a successful urban explorer YouTuber, making a remark to herself that she spent a lot of money to get to the mansion. Once she enters the mansion, she gives some exposition about the lore of the place and the end-of-times cult the owned it, explaining that they suddenly disappeared.

She continues too look around the mansion, quickly figuring out that something is terribly wrong, considering the bones, blood, hospital equipment, and spoiled food found around the first couple of rooms of the mansion. Regardless of the dangers, she continues on with her journey by going into the basement. There she discovers cryptic and concerning papers and pages of the cult's religion, believing in their God called "The Almighty" and their angel "Alto". When reading from the priest's stand, she suddenly gets chased by what she can only determine as a killer with a knife who wears a rag and hides in a dark room upstairs.

Realizing she lost her phone during the chase, she ultimately decides to leave the mansion grounds as it is not safe and to think about her next course of action. As she opens the door that leads to the exit, she realizes the harrowing truth to her situation; she is stuck in the mansion. No matter how many times she goes through the door, it leads back to a room of the mansion. Feeling distressed, she begins to panic about her situation before a voice behind the door talks to her.

The person behind the door claims they are another person trapped in the mansion just like her, and that she is trying to find a way out of the mansion. Curiously, she asks for a chocolate bar that Girl has on her, despite never having seen her directly. Not directly answering Girl's questions, they decide it would be best if they explored the mansion separately, much to the dismay of Girl. Left with no other choice, she agrees to the plan and is left alone to wander around the mansion, still recording, in hopes of finding a way out of the mansion.

After finding a screwdriver, she decides to descend into the basement once more, to find a panel with switches to open up a locked door. This alerts the same killer that chased Girl before, and before leaving the basement Girl encounters them and has to hide in the closet to survive. She goes back to the previously locked door and breaks down, wanting nothing to do with the mansion, but continues on. She eventually reaches another entrance to the dark storage room she first hid in, only to discover a pile of corpses tucked in the dark corner of the room, trying not to think too much about it, she leaves the room immediately to find an old axe.

With the old axe, she breaks a piece of furniture that impeded her way upstairs to the mansion, where she enters the cult leader's bedroom and is met again with the stranger behind the door. Strangely, they ask her for chocolate again, seemingly an automatic response to being called out. When told about this, they quickly move onto their findings about the cult having a ritual room somewhere in the mansion. They relay a theory that performing a specific ritual in said room would expel the curse of the mansion, letting them escape. Girl is upset about the stranger not taking care of the stranger but ultimately wants to help, wanting to stick together this time. The stranger refuses claiming that they would not like their face. They leave to explore the mansion once more, and Girl grabs a flashlight found in the room, she then goes through a crawlspace, experiencing a hallucination where she is being chased by cursed people.

After the hallucination, she explores a previously unexplored pitch-black room with the flashlight, and opens up a secret compartment to go into the prison side of the mansion which contains a non-functioning elevator. There she encounters another person tied-up, badly maimed, and incoherent. She decides it is not worth interacting with them and goes to get the power of the elevator running again. After doing so, she fiddles around with the jail cell system to get back to the elevator room, finding that it is too heavy and has a cadaver fall on her, triggering another hallucination, but with a giant eldritch monster this time around before getting overrun by smaller blob eldritch monsters.

Shaken up after the event, she kicks the cadaver outside the elevator and descends into the ritual room, where she comes across a blob eldritch monster (similar to that of her hallucination) and hides. She returns to the elevator to go back to the prison again due to the monster being too dangerous, and is once again met by the stranger from the other side of the door. The stranger reveals the three items are required for the ritual: candles, thread, and a "Red Spider Lily" flower. Girl makes a remark about the person tied up, which the stranger brushes off as having not seen them. Before leaving to find the items, Girl asks the stranger to take care of the blob monster, which to they agree.

Going to the previous rooms of the mansion, multiple statues of the angel Alto are shown blocking paths to certain parts of the mansion, watching Girl's every move. Girl then goes to the basement to retrieve a thread, while being taunted and almost getting killed by the Alto statues. She gets the candle upstairs, but not before seeing the remains of the killer that was chasing her in a box. Finally, she gets the red flower in the attic where various herbs are being grown. Returning to the ritual room, she notices the entire floor has lost power and gets ambushed by the same blob monster, having to hide once again, falling into another hallucination of being chased again.

Girl wakes up, seeing the monster gone, and notices a note from the stranger apologizing for being late, assuring Girl that they took care of the monster, and took the ritual items to prepare for the ritual. Girl explores a bit more before her flashlight's battery dying and enters the cult leader's room, retrieving the camera and learning that he was afraid of the fanatics of the cult, being unable to stop their constant rituals. She pays no mind to this and explores the dark rooms with the camera and finally finds the stranger in a dimly lit, and foul-smelling room, with the dead monster and three cadavers. The stranger is glad to finally see Girl, and claims they were going to fix the generator but got too hurt by killing the monster, claiming their finger also hurt. They ask her to get the chalice once she fixes the generator and leaves. Girl proceeds to fix the generator, getting the chalice that was requested from a room, and enters the ritual room with the stranger waiting for her.

Once in the ritual room, Girl gets startled by the stranger who is hiding in the dark corner of the room. They exchange a couple of words before the stranger asks Girl to start the ritual by putting the chalice in the middle of the ritual room. Girl complies hesitantly. She then puts the spider lily flower in the chalice, and is asked to cut her finger off with a curious bolt cutter. Girl is frighten by this, but the stranger seems more annoyed and tries to hurry her along, claiming that the house is being possessed by the god that the cult worshipped, and twisting the ritual is the only way to break the curse. Being increasingly hesitant, she begins to question the stranger, who eventually realizes her plan is not working, reveals their identity as none other than Girl herself. She is missing an eye and looks jaded. Girl is shocked and confused and has more questions, but the older Girl ignores her and asks her if she is going to cut her finger or not, stating that they do not have a lot of time left. Girl does not want to do the ritual, so the older Girl has no choice but to fight her and force her to go with the ritual. Girl is able to fight her off, causing the older Girl to panic and beg for mercy before being brutally killed by a parasite that resided in her missing eye.

Believing she had killed her other version, she quickly goes to the chalice and comes to the grim realization that she is going to have to cut her own finger and chant to be free from the mansion. Once doing that, the house changes, the older Girl's corpse is gone and so are the ritual items. Girl leaves the mansion as fast as she can, missing a finger and deeply shaken from the events of the night. She rides her scooter to the hospital, where her sister comes to check on her and ask her what happened back at the mansion. Girl remains silent and aloof, not responding to her. After some compassionate words for her sister the sister leaves. Girl is incoherent as she looks from her hospital bed out the window, where in the rain, a flash of lighting reveals something eldritch in black shadow, alluding that Girl might have let the cult's god out to the world.

?

  • Suspicious and Hungry

Girl encounters ? for the first time when she realizes she is stuck in the mansion. They claim they are glad to have met Girl, explaining to her that they are trapped as well and hopes to find an exit. They calm her down by telling her that they are close to figuring out how the mansion operates and soon will find a way out for the both of them, while also reassuring her that they will take care of the monster chasing them. Curiously, ? knows that Girl carries chocolate bars with her and asks her if she can spare one. Additionally, they deny any attempts of working together and wishes to keep to themselves. Over time, they will encounter Girl again being evasive with their answers as to why they cannot work together, and eventually finds out that a ritual will get them out of the mansion.

Older Girl

Much to the shock of Girl, her ally throughout the night was none other than herself, but looking more tired and missing an eye. Older Girl found herself in the exact same situation as Girl did and has been stuck in there for an unimaginable amount of time. She is colder and crueler due to being desperate to leave the mansion.

  • In the Deceive ending where she does not reveal herself, she deceives Girl into performing the ritual for her and then leaving her stuck.
  • In the Bad Ending where she does reveal herself and wins against Girl's struggles, she punishes Girl by stabbing one of her eyes out first and then takes her finger for the sacrifice, she is then left in a dark room, presumably in the same fashion Older Girl got stuck in the mansion.
  • In the Bad Ending where she reveals herself and is fought off by Girl, she transforms into a blob monster similar to the one Girl encountered a while before the ritual, killing her.
  • In the Epitaph , she remains dead as Girl performs the ritual by cutting Older Girl's finger off and offering it.
  • In the Divine endings, she remains dead up until the ritual which completely erases her from existence.

Trivia

  • Cat in the Box is loosely connected to Gustav's older game Stygian[6] due to some characters from that game appearing in Cat in the Box, specifically Girl's sister, as she appears there as an important side-character.
  • The voice recorder's brand is Gustav's name in reverse.
  • Inside the game's files exists an unfinished and unused minigame[7] that contains the main character of Stygian.
