Levitation
From The Codex
Background
Levitation is the ability to float or hover above the ground without physical support. Unlike full-fledged flight, levitation is typically limited in speed, height, and maneuverability. It may be achieved through psychic power, magic, spiritual energy, or technological means. While often used for short-range movement or elevation, it can also serve as a defensive tool or symbol of power.
Also Called
- Hovering
- Anti-Gravity Suspension
- Aerial Stasis
- Floatation
Possible Applications
- Remaining suspended in midair without contact with the ground
- Evading ground-based traps or terrain effects
- Approaching enemies or objectives over obstacles
- Meditative or ritualistic suspension
- Traversing short vertical spaces without climbing
- Staying afloat while using other powers or abilities
Practical Uses
- Enables movement across hazardous terrain (lava, spikes, water) without risk
- Serves as a counter to knockback or fall damage by maintaining aerial positioning
- Useful for characters with ranged attacks or telekinetic abilities to maintain distance
- Can synergize with perception-based powers for a commanding field view
- Functions as a passive indicator of supernatural or psychic control
Variations
- Passive Levitation: The character floats continuously, often without conscious effort.
- Triggered Levitation: The character activates levitation for a limited time or under specific conditions.
- Telekinetic Levitation: The user lifts themselves using mental force or psionic energy.
- Magical Levitation: Achieved through spells, enchantments, or arcane rituals.
- Technological Levitation: Utilizes anti-gravity devices, thrusters, or electromagnetic fields.
Possible Limitations
- Cannot reach the speeds or altitudes associated with true flight
- May be affected by anti-magic zones, psychic nullification, or EMPs
- Limited duration depending on the user’s stamina or power source
- Vulnerable to airborne attacks or ranged projectiles while hovering
- May require concentration, leaving the user open to distraction or interruption
- Characters with certain physiologies (e.g., no control over mass) may not be able to levitate
