Mako Mankanshoku

From The Codex

Background

Mako lives with her family in the slums of Honnō City. She spends her days as a no-star student at Honnōji Academy. She befriended the transfer student, Ryūko Matoi, when she first arrived in the classroom. After Ryūko tried to assault the head of the student council, Satsuki Kiryūin, and fled the scene, Mako was captured because she was seen socializing with her. The Disciplinary group took Mako as a hostage but she was saved by Ryūko before she was deep-fried in a tub of scorching oil.

After the battle between Ryūko and the Boxing Club Captain, Takaharu Fukuroda, Mako met up with Ryūko when her family took her in. The next day, she invited Ryūko to stay with her and her family as they walked to school. She was unfazed despite being relentlessly bombarded with a barrage of tennis balls to the face. Mako was apprehended by the tennis club captain, Omiko Hakodate, for missing practice the day before, despite the fact that she was being held hostage at the time. Ryūko saved her as she was being tied up to a post and pelted on all sides by tennis balls. Mako made arguments against Uzu Sanageyama when he tried to fault Ryūko, which resulted in a tennis match between Ryūko and Omiko. Once the match was won, Mako fled with Ryūko under the cover of improvised steam.

When Ryūko was fighting a losing battle against Satsuki, Mako intervened between them and made a speech about how Ryūko should have no reason to be ashamed of showing her body, as well as commented that she and her family was talking about Ryūko’s body the night before. The speech motivated Ryūko to embrace wearing Senketsu and was finally able to maximize her potential.

During the event known as the “No-Late day”, Mako argued back to Gamagōri when he was questioning Ryūko's choice of current attire, and the argument later ended with how he should be wearing pajamas; instead of sleeping in the nude unless he wishes to get sick. As Mako and Ryūko attempted to get to class, they met up with the supposedly injured Maiko Ōgure and allowed her to join them out of kindness; however, she later betrayed them and stole Senketsu as it was being delivered by Mako's dog, Guts. After Ryūko beat up Maiko and reclaimed Senketsu, they both learned that they were tricked once again by Maiko's “fake school” trap. They were only able to make it into the school in time by crashing into the classroom after commandeering a cable cart.

She was made President of the Fight Club after Ryūko was intimidated by all the paperwork involved. Mako proved quite capable and competent in handling the day-to-day runnings of the Club and with Ryūko's many victories she was able to wrestle a 2-star ranking and with it, better living conditions for her family, quite easily. She was willing to fight Ryūko to keep that ranking and very nearly defeated her, although Ryūko did refuse to fight back against her friend. She stopped after seeing how all the luxury and standing had affected herself and her family. Mako disbanded the Fight Club and demoted herself back to No-Star so that they could all go back to enjoying their old life.

If Mako is properly motivated, she is capable of working hard and productively. During her time as president of the Fight Club, she showed a high level of competence and professionalism, as well as the ability to do complex papers and work. Having been poor for her whole life, Mako and her family tend to obsess about wealth. This trait was, at one point, even pushed so far that it caused her to turn against Ryūko temporarily, the latter trying to stop her greed. Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Cartoon Physics (Low: Mako is able to do a vast amounts of wacky actions in the show, be it extending her arms to inhuman lengths, to flying, or even dying for a brief moment in time and then coming back to life in the next shot), Surface Scaling (Should be able to do the same feat as Ryūko Matoi, who was able to run up a wall), Transformation (Mako is able to transform into her Two-Star Uniform), Regeneration and Healing (High-Low: While being punished for missing tennis practice, Mako was hit by a large amount of tennis balls. However, she seems to recover very quickly and then gets back up to fight the life fibers again), Social Influencing (While Mako and Ryuko were running late to school, one of the Three-Stars, Ira Gamagōri, caught the two and wanted to discipline her for not only running late, but for being out of uniform. However, Mako was able to convince him to to expel Ryuko, despite the fact that the rules in the school are very strict), Hammerspace and Weapon Creation (While eating lunch with Ryuko, Mako pulled out her lunch from her clothing, even though it would realistically never fit inside of them. She does this again when she fights Ryuko in the school yard as she was able to pull out a vast amount of weapons that seems like it is infinitely resupplying itself), Bulletproof (Standard Pierce Resistance: While wearing the Two-Star Goku Uniform, Mako should scale to Ryūko Matoi, who was shot by hundreds of bullets without taking any damage to her body. Nui is like Ryūko Matoi, who is made up of Life Fibers and will continue to regenerate unless cut by the Rendering Scissors), Chain Manipulation (Mako is able to create chains with her Two-Star Uniform in order to restrain or toss around her target. She was able to do this in her fight against Ryūko Matoi), Nullification and Durability Negation (Mako was able to punch through an entire tower of Life Fibers, which were indestructible to most of the cast. She was also able to stop a large portion of it from absorbing some of the cast as well. After her attack, we can see the the Life Fibers began to liquefy after Mako's attack).

Resistance to Heat Manipulation and Temperature Manipulation (Mako was able to survive being right on top of a giant pot of molten lava without being instantly burned to death. She was also able to hug Ryūko Matoi when she was in her berserker form, who was hot enough to instantly liquefy the rock around her), Nullification, Fear Manipulation, and Paralysis Inducement (When Ragyō Kiryūin activated her Absolute Domination ability, which takes away the power in your Goku Uniform and makes you so scared that you are unable to move, Mako was one of the only students there who were able to overcome Absolute Domination and move while it was still active), Corruption and Empathic Manipulation (In the series, if you so much as wear clothing more than 30% Life Fibers, you will become corrupted by its power and become fully insane. Mako was able to wear Senketsu, who is made up of 100% Life Fibers and she did not become insane)

Equipment

Two-Star Goku Uniform

As the President of the Fight Club, Mako was given a Two-Star Goku Uniform. This Uniform allows her to fight other students and greatly increases her fighting capabilities. Inside of her Uniform holds a vas variety of weapons that she can use to hurl at her opponents all at once or she can use the uniform to replace broken weapons or create weapons as well.

Golden Bat

As a close combat weapon, she uses a golden bat wrapped with bandages with nails stabbed into it. Mako was able to use this bat in order to match Ryūko Matoi in strength during their fight. It was also able to beat down Nui clones reliably.

Golden Spike-Ball and Chain

Mako can use a chain to bind her opponent and slam the opponent around. She used this against Ryuko during their fight to trap her and toss her around on the ground. She can also use the ball and chain to deal more damage to the opponent.

Mako Missiles

Inside of her golden bat, Mako has a missile that she can deploy at her target in order to cause a massive explosion. She used this attack against Ryuko to catch her off guard and to finish her off for good before snapping back to her senses

Brass Knuckles

Mako has a pair of brass knuckles that she uses to pumble her opponents repeatably. These punches has a massive amount of force behind them, as when she punched the ground one time, it was able to create a blast so big that it was able to destroy a large part of the school yard, and it was even able to blow away the 3 Stars, who are the strongest students at the school.

Notable Techniques

Transformation

After getting her Two-Star Goku Uniform, Mako is able to transform in order to get much stronger. She also gains access to a multitude of weapons as well

Other

Standard Tactics: While Mako has her Goku Uniform on, she will start off the fight by rushing down her opponents and try to overwhelm them by throwing a variety of weapons at them. She will also try to retrain the target with her chains or repeatedly slam them on the ground with it over and over again. Mako uses her bat to overpower her opponent and send missiles at them. If all else fails, Mako will use her Brass Knuckles in order to land many hefty blows on the target, doing massive damage to them. If Mako does not have her uniform, however, she will start to panic and run away. She often waits for Ryūko Matoi to come and save her

Weaknesses: Her Mako is defeated, her Goku Uniform will be completely destroyed and she will be left powerless. If she doesn't have her uniform, she has no combat strength and will be left defenseless

Trivia

  • Mako's surname Mankanshoku means "full, fullness, enough, satisfy" (満) (man), "ship, warship" (艦) (kan) and "decorate, ornament, adorn, embellish" (飾) (shoku), which literally means "full ship decoration" altogether.

Mako was originally going to have black or blonde hair along with pigtails or a ponytail.

  • According to Creative Director Shigeto Koyama, he initially was going to give Mako's Two-Star Uniform a design that he described as a "giant Hulk-like Mako" which would have been dubbed, "The Invincible Mako". The design was going to be based on the World War Hulk comic book mini-series. While this concept was scrapped, the WWH sticker on the side of Mako's boogie board in the second closing was inserted as a nod to the design.[10]
  • Mako's Two-Star uniform is based on common visual tropes regarding Japanese high school delinquent stereotypes.
