Petrification

From The Codex

Arceus getting petrified

Background

Petrification is the power to transform someone or something into stone. One of the most iconic examples comes from the myth of Perseus and Medusa, where Medusa could petrify anyone who looked directly at her. Although the method of activation can vary, the ultimate outcome remains consistent: the target is turned into an inorganic statue.

Petrification is classified as a sub-category of transmutation, as it forcibly alters the target's composition into stone or other inorganic material. It is widely considered a formidable ability due to its capacity to bypass conventional durability.

Applications

  • Transforming living beings into stone, rendering them immobilized.
  • Affecting objects, structures, or environments by turning them into stone.
  • Potentially bypassing durability, as the ability typically disregards physical resistance.

Variations

  • Partial Petrification: Only certain parts of the target's body are turned into stone, which may restrict movement without complete immobilization.
  • Petrification Reversal: The ability to undo petrification, restoring the target to their original state.
  • Petrification Aura: Generating an area of effect where anyone within range risks being turned to stone.

Limitations

  • May require direct eye contact or specific conditions to activate.
  • Resistance or immunity to transmutation or status effects could nullify the ability.
  • The process might be reversible through specific means, such as magical spells, antidotes, or abilities.

Users

  • Medusa from Castlevania: Medusa's gaze can turn victims to stone, aligning with her mythological origins.

Possible Limitations

  • The ability might not work on targets without organic material, such as machines or energy beings.
  • Activation could depend on environmental factors or require significant concentration.
  • Requiring eye contact or proximity to the target could restrict the effectiveness of the ability.
