I have some issues with the way Asriel is portrayed, so I'm here to share my perspective.
If we go by the narrative, Asriel must defeat the human in order to gain control over the timeline, and only then will he reduce all of their progress to 0. However, it is important to take into account that Asriel does not enter his God of Hyper Death form until the point where it is stated that "The whole world is ending," which reinforces the idea that, when he used the Hyper Goner, he did not destroy the timeline. This interpretation is further supported by the fact that Human is capable of dodging the attack, and even Napstablook was able to witness it from inside his own house. Taken together, these details suggest that the Hyper Goner, by itself, did not immediately destroy the timeline. Rather, the actual process of ending the world and obtaining complete control over it occurs afterward, this takes into account that he wanted the world and his friends to forget about humanity so that it would lose control of the timeline therefore, destroying it would be very foolish. In fact, the point is for the human to help them recover their memories, since Frisk loses their ability to move their body or use their save file; that's why it's mentioned that saving the game is impossible.
But he can still maintain his Unknown: Cosmic level due to his infinite stats, but with this I want to demonstrate that, narratively, Toby Fox only wanted to show that when Asriel refers to destroying the timeline, he is only erasing Frisk's progress and it is not a cosmic destruction.
