Speed Transcendence

From The Codex
Jump to navigationJump to search

Background

Speed Transcendence is the state of being beyond the concept of speed and distance. The user has surpassed the point where conventional measurements of velocity, acceleration, or spatial separation make any difference to their actions. An opponent's speed does not matter because the user operates outside the framework that defines speed in the first place.

This is not a measure of being "faster" in any quantifiable sense. A character with Speed Transcendence does not have infinite speed, immeasurable speed, or any other tier of velocity. Rather, the concept of speed simply does not apply to them. Their attacks always land first, they always close any distance instantly, and no opponent can outrun or outpace them, not because the user has a higher numerical value of speed, but because speed itself is not a factor that limits or defines them.

The difference between Speed Transcendence and conventional super speed is fundamental. A speedster with immeasurable velocity still operates within the concept of speed, they simply have an extremely high value within that system. A character with Speed Transcendence does not apply by the system essentially ignoring typical speed rules. This makes it to where they could have regular human speeds but ignore all manners of perceptions and reactions due to their transcendent state.

Also Called

  • Speed Surpass
  • Beyond Speed
  • Transcendent Speed
  • Distance Transcendence

Possible Applications

  • Attacks always land before the opponent's attacks, regardless of the opponent's speed
  • Closing any distance instantly, as if distance does not exist
  • Being impossible to outrun or escape from in combat
  • Moving in environments where speed cannot normally be defined (timeless voids, conceptual spaces)
  • Ignoring speed-based defenses or immunities
  • Bypassing abilities that rely on comparing speed values
  • Acting first in any engagement without exception

Practical Uses

  • First Strike Guarantee: The user's attacks always land before the opponent's, regardless of how fast the opponent is. Even an opponent with instant or immeasurable speed cannot act before the user.
  • Distance Nullification: Physical distance between the user and their target becomes irrelevant. The user can close any gap instantly or attack from any range without travel time.
  • Uncatchable: No opponent can pursue or catch the user. Attempts to chase, intercept, or surround the user fail because the speed comparison never favors the pursuer.
  • Priority Override: In any situation where timing or turn order matters, the user always acts first. This includes reacting to ambushes, countering attacks, or responding to instantaneous effects.
  • Escape Prevention: Opponents cannot flee from the user. Any attempt to create distance, retreat, or disengage fails because distance does not meaningfully exist between the user and their target.

Example Variations

  • Attack-Only: The user's attacks transcend speed, but their movement does not. Their strikes always land first, but they can still be outrun or chased.
  • Movement-Only: The user can traverse any distance instantly and cannot be caught, but their attacks do not share the same property.
  • Full Transcendence: Both the user's attacks and movements transcend speed and distance entirely.
  • Conditional: The user's transcendence only activates against opponents who are faster than them, or only works when certain conditions are met.
  • Reactive: The user does not constantly transcend speed, but rather surpasses whatever speed an opponent demonstrates, always remaining "one step ahead." In cases like this the user will always end up faster then their opponent no matter how fast their opponent moves.

Possible Limitations

  • The user may still be affected by abilities that do not rely on speed or distance, such as fate manipulation or abstract attacks.
  • Attacks above the conventional laws of physics may ignore one's speed transcendence.
  • The user may be unable to control the degree of their transcendence, always moving or attacking at maximum priority regardless of intent.
  • Transcending speed may make fine or precise movements difficult, as normal speed regulations no longer apply.
  • The ability may not protect against attacks that do not travel through space or take time to land, such as telepathic assaults or reality warping.
