Background

Terraria is a video game developed by Re-Logic. It was first released as a game for Windows on May 16th, 2011 but has since expanded to several other platforms. It is a 2D action-adventure, open-world sandbox / platformer game in which the player controls a single character in a generated world. The game follows your character as they journey through the complex world of Terraria, building, mining, and fighting there way through the world.

The series has since expanded into a multi-media franchise featuring graphic novels, comics, board games, and more with plans for a "Terraria 2" to be developed at some point. After Terraria's previously planned final update, Journey's End, a free DLC was launched called tModLoader, a program designed for the installation, development, and management of mods for the Terraria game.

Since its release in 2011, Terraria is the world's 15th most sold video game, with over 44.5 million sold copies as of April 2024, including paid mobile downloads.[1].

Terms

  • World: The term "world" in Terraria often refers to the planet which the game primarily takes place on, this is shown clearly in the official eight-year anniversary lore, where planets and worlds are used in conjunction with each other. There are only a handful of exceptions to this, mainly consisting of referenced to iconic quotes from various series.

tModLoader

Some of the information indexed are thanks in part to the tModLoader Wiki.

tModLoader is a free program which allows playing Terraria with mods. The built-in Mod Browser facilitates downloading and updating mods, as well as uploading one's own mods. tModLoader is developed by the TML Team and is released by them as a standalone program, although it is also available on Steam as Terraria DLC thanks in part to Re-Logic.

Due to Re-Logic directly endorsing tModLoader[2], information regarding modded content will be listed and detailed here for those who are looking to make profiles featuring a particular mod.

Rules for Modded Profiles

Due to the vast array of mods on tModLoader, there are bound to be mods that do not meet the criteria to be featured on the Codex wiki. For general information regarding these rules, please refer to Rules for Fanon Profiles.

Examples of Mods that are allowed

  • Calamity Mod: Calamity Mod is the biggest Terraria mod and is a complete overhaul of the story for Terraria. Alongside this, it features well over a dozen bosses, thousands of weapons, new features, original artwork and sprites, and its own music dedicated to the mod.
  • Thorium Mod: Thorium is one of the biggest mods developed and features several new bosses, three new classes, new music, a new biome, and new sprites and artwork.
  • Spirit Mod: Spirit Mod is a major content mod that adds new biomes, bosses, weapons, and armor whilst also fleshing out the progression of the base game of Terraria even further.

Examples of Mods that are not allowed

  • Overhaul Mod: Though a massive mod, Overhaul is purely a gameplay change that alters the base game elements and does not add enough to differentiate or warrant its own page.
  • Quality of Life Mods: Quality of life mods aim to purely adjust the standard gameplay to be more accessible and efficient. Making pages for mods like these are entirely pointless when compared to major content mods.
  • Infernum Mod: Infernum Mod is an example of a mod that attempts to add to already existing mods, such as Calamity Mod, or alter the gameplay of specific bosses. Ultimately, these mods are unofficial extensions to their source that cannot have there own profiles.
