User:MrWarnerTheGreat/Pre-Hardmode Terraria Calculation Compilation

From The Codex

Introduction

This blog will exclusively look at Terraria's Pre-Hardmode gameplay and calculating specific feats from this half of the game.

Speed for flying to Space

This will be a bit of a weird calculation, as I'm using an in-game unit for measuring speed (Miles per hour) to get a much higher result.

Before anyone throws a fit because I'm taking math over in-game speed units, I just want to establish that the characters in Terraria regularly move fast enough to create afterimages, fly into space, and moving in tandem with bullets which also fly up into space in a few seconds. Furthermore, Terraria enemies are seen in cinematic trailers traversing the surface of the world to the core (Underworld) within a few seconds.

Now, moving on, I recorded myself flying into the space biome using the UFO mount, which took fifteen seconds total. The Earth's atmosphere is about 6,214 miles high, or 10,000 kilometers.

Such a speed would be 666666.666667 m/s for 41mph in-game. Dividing this number by the in-game speed unit makes a single mph equal to 16260.1626016 m/s, which is Massively Hypersonic.

Tree Fragmentation

In Terraria, you can fragment a tree into wooden logs with a few chops. All trees in-game can be harvested at the beginning of the game (Assuming the biome is in your world). So we'll use the Rich Mahogany trees.

These trees can grow up to about twenty-four blocks tall in-game, or forty-eight feet (A single block is two feet), or 1463.04 centimeters.

Comparing the base of the tree the Terrarian (Who is roughly three blocks tall, or six feet), we get a width of 40.3543307085 centimeters.

We'll use a cylinder formula, giving us a volume of 1871226.5848825cm³. Now I wasn't able to find the fragmentation value of mahogany wood anywhere, but it's noted to be one of the strongest woods in the market.

For this reason, I'll be comparing it to oak, live, which has a fragmentation value of 18.3401 J/cc.

With all of that done, our equation is 1871226.5848825*18.3401 = 34318482.6894 joules, or 0.008202314218307839 tons of TNT.

Dividing this by three (Since it normally takes three swings to destroy wood in-game) gets our final result to be 0.00273410473 tons of TNT, which is Room level (9-A).

Le Bombé Blasts

Standard Bomb Explosion

A regular bomb has a blast radius of four blocks, or 2.4384 meters. Slapping that into thr volume for a sphere formula gets us 60.730024773124meters³.

Now instead of plugging this into an explosion formula, we're gonna use the fragmentation value of tungsten.

This makes our final equation 60730024.7731cm³*400 = 24292009909.2 joules, or 5.805929710611855 tons of TNT, Large Building level (High 8-C).

Stick of Dynamite Explosion

The stick of dynamite is slightly easier due to the official Terraria wiki giving us a direct radius for the explosion.

with the seven block radius, or 4.2672 meters, we can get a spherical volume of 325474976.518cm³.

Using the same equation to get our final result, we get 325474976.518*400 = 130189990607 joules, or 31.116154542782 tons of TNT, City Block level (8-B).

Explosives Explosion

Time for the big battle le bombé; explosives. These are by far the most powerful explosives , as they require three sticks of dynamite.

Before I properly calculate this, just know that multiplying the original stick of dynamite result here gets us 93.3484636283 tons of TNT. Keep that in mind when I do the math here.

As seen above, the radius of the explosives is ten blocks, or more specifically 6.096 meters.

This gives us a spherical volume of 948906637.08cm³. Our final equation of these three calculations is 948906637.08*400 = 379562654832 joules, or 90.7176517284895 tons of TNT. 90% into City Block level (8-B).

Crazy how close the multiplied sticks of dynamite and actual explosive yield of the... explosives... came out to be.

Eye of Cthluhu KE

This was a little tricky to do for me (Given it's my first KE calculation). But I found a rather simple method for getting speed.

I recorded some footage of the Eye of Cthluhu flying into the space biome, which was about nine seconds.

As established prior, the Earth's atmosphere is about 6,214 miles high, or 10,000 kilometers. This makes the EoC's speed 1111111.11111 m/s, which is Massively Hypersonic.

Now I'll be using two speeds since there does exist an in-game speed unit of mph. So for my low-end, I'll scale the Eye of Cthluhu above the Wall of Flesh's top speed in-game.

Now the Eye of Cthluhu's weight shouldn't be as tricky for me. The average adult human eye is six cubic centimeters.

Using this video for the time being to get the Eye of Cthluhu's height gives us a volume of 27391349.47351cm³.

That is 4565224.91225 times bigger, and thus heavier, than the average eye. The weight of a human eye is 7.5 grams, which makes the EoC's weight 34239.24966046993 kilograms. Now for our formula, KE = 0.5*M*V^2.

Low-End: 0.5*34239.24966046993*51^2 = 44528144.1834 joules, or 0.0106424818793977 tons of TNT, which is Small Building level (Low 8-C).

High-End: 0.5*34239.24966046993*1111111.11111^2 = 21135339000000000 joules, or 5.05146725621 megatons of TNT. That's City level (7-B).

Wall of Flesh KE

Now the Wall of Flesh's height was a little hard to scale properly due to how awkward the Underworld is, however I remembered that the Wall of Flesh is as tall as the borders of the Underworld itself.

As for the height of the Underworld, it's roughly 318 blocks in the largest world, or 193.853 meters. Thus, we have the Wall of Flesh's height.

Now for its width. We'll simply compare the WoF to the Terrarian who we've established as three blocks tall.

79px = 1.8288 meters

210px = 4.8613670868 meters

While we're at it, we can also get the height of flesh mouth since we'll need that for our next image.

214px = 4.95396455512 meters

365px = 4.95396455512 meters

339px = 4.60107940857 meters.

Now to get the volume of the wall. Given what the name states, we'll be using a cube formula for our volume.

Plugging all the previous numbers aboves gets us a volume of 4336013956.32cm³. Given the WoF is made out of... flesh, that gets us a weight of 4379374.1 kilograms.

Now for simplicity sake, I'll be doing a low-end and high-end like I did for the Eye of Cthluhu above; The low-end will strictly be using the in-game unit for speed literally, whereas the high-end uses our first calc in this blog.

Now, the Wall of Flesh, at it's maximum speed, can move at fifty miles per hour, so we'll use this for both ends.

Low-End: 0.5*4379374.1*50^2 = 5474217625 joules, which is 1.308369413241 tons of TNT, Large Building level (High 8-C).

High-End: 0.5*4379374.1*813008.13008^2 = 1447344200000000000 joule, or 345.9235659655831796 megatons of TNT, which is Mountain level (7-A).

Bonus Section

There was an old 505 Games trailer that featured five WoF walls merged together.

Because there's five walls in this trailer, that means we need to multiply our original weight by five. This gets us a final weight of 21896870.5 kilograms.

Low-End: 0.5*21896870.5*50^2 = 27371088125 joules, or 6.5418470662046 tons of TNT, Large Building level (High 8-C)

High-End: 0.5*21896870.5*813008.13008^2 = 7236721000000000000 joules, or 1.7296178298 gigatons of TNT, Island level (6-C).

Conclusion
