Background

The Saga of Tanya the Evil, known in Japan as Yōjo Senki (幼女戦記, lit. "The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl"), is a Japanese light novel series written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki. It began serialization online in 2010, on the user-generated novel publishing website Arcadia. Enterbrain acquired the series and since then has published twelve volumes since October 2013. A manga adaptation with art by Chika Tōjō began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine from April 2016.

An anime television series adaptation by NUT was broadcast on Japanese television from January 6 to March 31, 2017, and was licensed by Crunchyroll and Medialink. Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie, a theatrical film taking place after the events of the anime series, was released in Japan on February 8, 2019. A second season was announced on June 19, 2021.

In 2013 of modern-era Tokyo, an unnamed atheist Japanese salaryman, in the moment of being murdered by a disgruntled subordinate whom he had fired due to poor performance at work, is confronted by an entity that declares itself to be God who condemns the salaryman for not having 'faith'. The salaryman disbelieves in its existence, criticises its various statements from his perspective as an atheist and mockingly terms it as 'Being X'. The entity decides to reincarnate the salaryman into a world where he would face sufficiently difficult circumstances to turn to Being X for help.

The salaryman is reborn as Tanya Degurechaff, an orphaned girl in an alternate reality's equivalent of Imperial Germany, known as the Empire, in which World War I has been delayed until the 1920s and where magic has been incorporated into the military. According to Being X, if Tanya either does not die a natural death or refuses to have faith in it, her soul will leave the cycle of reincarnation and will be sent to hell for the countless sins that Tanya has committed in her previous life. In search for an escape, Tanya decides to join the Empire's Mage Corps and fight in the war, hoping to reach a high enough rank as fast as possible to remain far from the battlefield, and in this way avoid the risk of being killed. Even if she's now forced to speak with a young girl's lips, Tanya soon turns into a ruthless soldier who prioritizes efficiency and her own career over anything else, even the lives of those beneath her, especially those that get on her bad side.

Power of the Verse

Despite seeming like an average military verse, the Youjo Senkai series mixes military with the concept of magic existing in the verse, having the verse reach superhuman levels of strength, speed and durability. Most of the military soldiers are standard athletic humans, though mages can amplify their attacks and strength to supehuman levels and higher mages reaching magic comparable to that of a nuke. The characters also possess great speed due to their magic, being capable of avoiding optic rays and lasers in combat. The mages has abilities such as Magic, Reality Warping, Energy Projection, Explosion Manipulation, Healing, Spatial Manipulation, Blessed, etcetera.

The gods are cosmic in power. They hold abilities such as Universal Creation, Fate Manipulation, Power Bestowal, Telepathy etcetera.

Terms

• Mages: Mage is a term for humans with the special ability to store and channel Mana as a means to cast spells, giving them advantages over civilians. According to legend, they can cast spells with Orbs and Scepters as conduits. Nowadays, with mankind gaining better understanding in their powers, magic engineers achieved orb modernization enabling mages to systematically cast spells and replace scepters with other tools such as spell rifles. This phenomenal breakthrough finally led to a formation of a new type of military unit: soldiers who are able to cast magic.

• Magic: Magic is the phenomenon where mages use their mana to interfere with the world, a method that allows apparition of phenomena by giving appropriate stimulation to the point of application. Modern magic is achieved through technology Operation Orb, unlike the era of legends, this allowed people to clearly understand in detail the where, the how, and to what degree of power to interfere with reality. Some of the aspects of magic in Youjo Senki universe are noted to be a mystery such as fundamental principles related to mana and interference formula. Mana signals can be detected by using magic, and it seems most artillery units in this world have equipment to detect mana signals and conduct magically guided bombardment. In Rhine Front, a number of Imperial recruit mages got blown away in trenches by Republican artillery because they leaked mana signal by deploying magic shield.

• Operation Orb: An Operation Orb or Computation Jewel is a tool mages use to interfere with reality through magic according to their will, a breakthrough to recreate miraculous phenomena through the combination of both mana and analogue computation. The device is currently a black box, as not much has been revealed about its operation, but its main function is known to process the world's data and convert mana of user mages. The Great Powers had entered a cutthroat competition in researching and developing this technology. In the second chapter of Deus lo Vult, it's revealed that the Empire is the pioneer in this aspect of magical technology through their Chief Engineer Adelheid von Schugel, the man also responsible for keeping Empire's supremacy in magical technology, the culmination of which is the practical implementation of a dual-core Operation Orb: the Elenium Type 97 ‘Mobile Assault’ Operation Orb. Orbs require basic maintenance at least once a month in order to operate properly.
