User:Geo GeoZ/N2 Mine against Sachiel (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

A N2 mine is detonated against the Third Angel Sachiel back in Episode 1 of the series, resulting in a tremendous explosion that actually wipes out the entirety of Mt. Takanosu in the process.

However, this calculation does not look at the explosion itself, but rather the crater it left behind, shown two episodes later.

Now, the river seen in the screenshot above is most likely the Tama River, one of the major Japanese rivers which runs through the capital Tokyo. According to this brief paragraph, the Tama (or at least one of its tributaries) is sourced at Mt. Takanosu.

A photograph of the Tama at the upper section of one of its sources is provided from here.

Spoiler:

The red line in the spoilered image depicts the width of a stairway built beside the river. The space provided in the stairway should be enough to at least enable one person climbing up/down to stretch out their arms and grasp both sides of the railings without discomfort. Armspan to body height ratio is typically defined as being anywhere from 1 to 1.023. Therefore, using the average Japanese male height of 1.72 metres, I'll use the average armspan of 1.72 metres also. It measures out to 25 pixels.

Green line depicts the widest point of the river on the same level as the stairway. It measures out to 290 pixels or 20.01 metres.

Spoiler:

The wine-coloured line represents the Tama River at 8 pixels: note that using the 20.01 metre estimate at the chosen location is likely a low-end, due to the river having entered the meander stage across flat land, where it typically is wider than at the upper source regions.

The crater diameter measures to 764 pixels or 1910 metres (1.910 kilometres). The crater depth measures to 90 pixels or 225 metres.

Remember I said that I wasn't going to go to Episode 1 for screenshots?

I lied.

In the above link, head down to Cut #097: references are made to 18% of Sachiel's biomass "appearing to be melted" and a surface temperature at the crater site being at 3000 degrees Celsius. Just for confirming that the mine detonation had at least melting properties.

The height of Mt. Takanosu is 1736 metres above sea level (another source reiterating a height of "just under 1800 metres").

1736 + 255 = 1961 metres of rock destroyed by the detonation.

Going to be a tad bit lazy and assume a generic conical shape for Mt. Takanosu.

The volume of a cone:

3.14*955*955*1961/3 = 1,871,943,472.83 m^3

Energy required to melt granite is 4300 J/cm^3

1,871,943,472.83*1,000,000*4300 = 8049356933169000000 joules or 1.92 gigatons of TNT equivalent or near baseline Island level
