Background

Lain Iwakura is the protagonist of the Serial Experiments series Lain. Although she initially presents herself as a shy Japanese girl in high school, her life takes a radical turn when she receives an email from Chisa Yomoda, a classmate from her school who had committed suicide. This message introduces her to the virtual world of The Wired, where much of the series unfolds and where she discovers disturbing truths about herself.

Throughout the series, Lain discovers that her online identity is more powerful than her real-life identity. She is subjected to hallucinations by the Knights to make her lose her sense of self and seek solace in the Wired, cyberspace (an equivalent to the internet, but much deeper), in order to fulfill the prophecy of the coming of the goddess of the Wired.

During his exploration in the Wired, Lain develops multiple personalities, meets digital entities and fulfills the prophecy.
