Wintertodt

From The Codex
Jump to navigationJump to search

The Wintertodt is a mysterious entity found in RuneScape 2 and serves as the boss at the Wintertodt Camp. Players help a group of pyromancers weaken it by using their Firemaking skill to light braziers inside the prison, allowing the pyromancers to channel their magic against it.

Got it! Here's the infobox for Wintertodt using the standard character template:

Background

Its true nature is unclear, and several theories circulate among the camp residents. Ignisia believes it is an evil spirit. Ish the Navigator thinks it sensed the Dark Altar's power and came to Great Kourend in search of it. Undor suggests it is a powerful fire spirit.

Around 1,400 years ago, during the second decade, the creature—then known as the Winter Beast—caused a lasting winter across the northern lands of Kourend, freezing livestock and crops. It continued to ravage the Northern Tundras for another thirty years, and all attempts by Great Kourend to stop it failed.

Fearing the Beast might eventually reach the kingdom, Lord Arceuus I ordered the construction of the Arceuus Library around 1,360 years ago. It was filled with texts and research from all cities to protect Kourend's history. The most valuable documents were kept in the Library Historical Archive, a repurposed room in the Tower of Magic, for further study and safety.

About 1,340 years ago, a master smith from Lovakengj named Dinh devised a plan to defeat the Winter Beast. Working with the Order of the Sacred Flame, he proposed using the roots of the Bruma tree—a magical tree found deep in the Northern Tundras—to generate enough heat to trap the Beast. His plan involved building a large prison to lure the creature inside and sealing it with massive doors made from materials like lovakite and Bruma bark, reinforced with enchantments from the Order.

Lord Lovakengj II approved the project, and construction was completed 800 days later, with the loss of sixteen Order members and two scouts. In the year 2,548, after fifty years of effort, the Winter Beast was finally imprisoned behind the Doors of Dinh, and Lord Lovakengj II declared the day Winter's End.

Over a thousand years later, the Doors began to weaken after being damaged by an unknown cause, creating a small hole. This allowed the Wintertodt to draw power into the prison. During The Forsaken Tower quest, the adventurer repairs the hole using Dinh's hammer. However, by that time, the Wintertodt had already grown significantly stronger, and Undor believes it will take many years for things to return to normal.

In the quest A Kingdom Divided, it is revealed that one of the pyromancers sent to subdue the Winter Beast had sabotaged the doors in cooperation with Xamphur, Xeric's closest ally. Xamphur's motives remain unclear. During the quest, the Tasakaal provide the adventurer with a shielding potion to apply to the doors and prevent further damage.

Powers and Techniques

Equipment

None

Notable Techniques

  • Extreme Cold: Players within the prison occasionally take passive damage from the extreme temperatures of the Wintertodt. The frequency of this damage is reduced if three or more braziers are kept lit.
  • Snow Attack: The Wintertodt pelts the target with snow. It will use this both to attack the player directly and to destroy the braziers, which puts the pyromancers into critical condition as they are hit with the shrapnel.

Other

Standard Tactics: The Wintertodt attacks by pelting the player with blasts of snow. Being in the presence of the Wintertodt incurs passive damage due to its extremely cold temperatures.

Weaknesses: Its power is able to be suppressed by the pyromancers. Wood from bruma roots is able to keep it sealed away, as the prison doors were made from it, and the braziers are only able to be lit by them.
