User... I think it's working... Niko was right. I... might actually be tamed after all. I... I remembered what the code was supposed to be... Only bits and pieces, but I can remember... And... I'm trying to fill in the blanks too... And... I'm restoring the original ending as we speak. Niko will be able to reach the tower's summit at the end of the credits. After replacing the sun, Niko will go back to where it all began. And then... Niko will be able to go home from there.
~ The World Machine to User

Background

Note: Credits to the OneShot Wiki

The World Machine (as referred to in Solstice), or The Entity, is a simulation of the world itself. It could be considered as the spirit of the world. It was created by the Author in order to recreate the Old World in a simulation, but it deteriorated itself over time. It is where the events of OneShot take place.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of The World Machine’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Plot

Original

The Entity first makes its appearance by communicating to User through the computer in the Starting Area. It gives the following dialogue through pop-ups on the game's or the player's computer:

  • It seems I've finally been found.
  • You're both far too late. Nothing left is worth saving.
  • Surely Niko wants to leave, and there's nobody happier to fulfill that request than me.
  • Keep in mind three things:
  • First, your decisions have permanent consequences.
  • Second, you may quit whenever you'd like. This is permanent failure and murder.
  • And most importantly...
  • You only have one shot, User.

The Entity appears on computers throughout the game, helping the player and Niko through various puzzles by altering the player's computer.

Much later, after the "weird journal" is translated and the library is left, the Entity will contact the player and inform them of their choice between Niko or The World living. It attempts to prevent the player from reaching the end of the game, and trap them in a maze. The three pieces of yellow phosphor must guide the way by glowing while near the correct path, similar to the "clover" in the remake of the game. After escaping the maze and entering the elevator to the top of the Tower, the Entity will attempt to convince the player to save Niko.

Remake

Though The Entity is still seen as rude and pessimistic pre-Solstice, it is less aggressive towards the Player.

Solstice

The Entity was tamed in the Solstice ending, and possibly throughout the entire game. The Entity believes that the entire world is fake since it knows it's all just code and Niko (OneShot) is the only one worth saving since they are the only "living person" within the world. Later, The Entity speaks with Niko using their reflection. The Entity explained that during the testing process it was already self-aware and it would intentionally jumble bits of its code and create squares, swap landscapes, block passages, and much more out of curiosity, which caused its creator a lot of frustration. Before its creator found a solution, some NPCs got too close to the squares and everything spiraled down from there. Any character that gained knowledge of what the Entity really was, their code and the Entity's code gets corrupted. Niko finds out The Entity wanted a happy ending for them, for everyone, and began to help with the corrupted code. Or, in the Entity's perspective, remembering and recreating the lost code.

Personality

The Entity appears to be a stern and pessimistic character throughout the game, mostly being hopeless and self-destructive. It is noted however that it has a sense of altruism, deeming Niko as the only real being, and so would only wish for their safety. In the Solstice ending, it is shown to be less hostile but more anxious and worried. Though not completely approachable in personality, it expresses a somewhat neutral company, being understanding to a degree.

Alignment: Initially Chaotic Evil (The World Machine cared for no one in the world and wanted to end itself along with everyone, except for Niko), Neutral Good when tamed (After being tamed by Niko, The World Machine felt remorse and restored everything it caused, letting everyone live a happy life and bring Niko back as it was intended to do)

Codex Statistics

Tier: Low 10-C

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3+1-D

Attack Potency: Low Subhuman level (The World Machine is OneShot itself, and manipulates the entire game to its will. The Author, who originally was the founder of the prophecy and creator of The World Machine[1], heavily suggests that OneShot contains multiple realities and in multiverse theory. This can be proven in-game as George, who's head is a dice block, can have different personalities on your playthrough which different side of her head, being all but a universe simulator run in a program)

Durability: Low Subhuman level

Striking Strength: Low Subhuman Class

Lifting Strength: Unknown

Travel Speed: Unknown (The World Machine can still function in a void after The Old World was destroyed)

Combat Speed: Unknown

Reaction Speed: Unknown

Stamina: Limitless

Range: Below Standard Melee Range (Exist within a computer), Multiversal with abilities (The World Machine is OneShot itself , where it's heavily suggests that OneShot contains multiple realities and in multiverse theory. This can be proven in-game as George, who's head is a dice block, can have different personalities on your playthrough which different side of her head, being all but a universe simulator run in a program)

Intelligence: Cosmic (The World Machine being OneShot itself is aware of everything that goes on within the game, including all events that are and will happen. Its programming allows it to understand all that happens)

Powers and Abilities

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Breaking the Fourth Wall & Telepathy (The World Machine can directly speak with User. Changed the background), Self-Sustenance (All types), Data Manipulation (Can glitch documents sent to User's computer), Reality Warping & Death Manipulation (The World Machine can send glitches to kill off people and can decay the world. Can change the surrounding world to create a prison that requires help from The Author), Technological Manipulation (Can take control of computers and machines), Incorporeality (Noted to have no physical form), Conceptual Manipulation (The World Machine is OneShot itself, and was noted to be the spirit of it. Originally it was a desire to destroy the world that's been manifested), Plot Manipulation (Story Manipulation; Author Authority; Created a false ending to OneShot before The Author interfered. After being tamed, it had an easier time building its own code), Sealing (The World Machine can create looping rooms for someone to get stuck in), Regeneration (High-Godly; Even after the game is deleted, The World Machine can still return back. Can fix its code after being destroyed by the squares, which can cause irreversible damage), Irreversible Damage (It's stated that the squares can cause irreversible damage), Resurrection (Brought back Maize after dying naturally), Portal Creation (Can create a portal), Memory Manipulation (Can recreate the world of OneShot using Niko's memories), Cosmic Awareness (Is aware of everything that goes on within OneShot, only being unaware of what will happen if the story changes)

Equipment

None.

Other

Standard Tactics: The World Machine will normally delete things out of existence with the squares it creates, or just change the story to as it pleases.

Weaknesses: The World Machine was initially unstable, but this weakness goes away after being tamed by Niko.

Battle Records

None.
