Alternate Breathing

Background

Alternate Breathing is the ability to breathe in things other then regular air based oxygen, characters of this ability either cannot breathe in air or they have other types of elements they can breathe in. It should be noted that they do not have Respiratory Self-Sustenance as they still need some type of element to breathe.

Aquatic Breathing

Aquaman can breathe underwater indefinitely

Aquatic Breathing is the power to breathe underwater for either a superhuman amount of time or indefinitely. Normally the ability is done through the use of special equipment, transforming oneself into a sea creature, or it's an innate ability apart of a species. This ability is different from Self-Sustenance as the user still needs to breathe oxygen, they can just breathe oxygen underwater.

  • Starfy (The Legendary Starfy): Starfy is able to breathe underwater, likely due to sharing many similarities to sea creatures.
  • Wollywog (Pikmin): The Wollywogs are an amphibious species that are normally deep within water, being able to breathe in it.

Non-Oxygen Related Applications

Anaerobic Respiration

Anaerobic respiration is respiration using electron acceptors other than molecular oxygen. Instead of oxygen, the user is capable of respiration through other substances such as nitrate, fumarate, sulfate, or elemental sulfur.

  • Olimar (Pikmin): Olimar directly notes that the Earth is filled with a poison known as oxygen. Showing he naturally breathes in something other then oxygen.

Hazardous Environment Breathing

Luffy is able to fully breathe poisons into his body.

Characters of Hazardous Environment Breathing are able to breathe in environments that the average human would find poisonous or hazardous, this could be due to the characters adapting to the environment, naturally being born in said environment, or having equipment to protect them from said environment. It should be noted that merely being able to breathe in a hazardous environment does not automatically mean one can breathe in any hazardous environments.

Limitations

• For many of these characters, while they can breathe something other then oxygen, this may be due to oxygen being poisonous to them or them having an inability to breathe it in at all.
