Background

One-Punch Man is a franchise created by ONE. The webcomic started in July 2009, with more than 10 million views and 20,000 hits per day. Shueisha's Young Jump Next picked up the series after Yusuke Murata contacted ONE and proposed to redraw the comic for digital publication.

The first chapter of the manga was published on June 14, 2012. The manga series began publication in Viz Media's Weekly Shonen Jump (Shonen Jump Alpha at the time) in North America on January 21, 2013. The first digital volume was released in February 2014. The manga was released for print in the United States on September 1st, 2015.

The story follows the life of an average hero named Saitama who manages to win all of his fights with just one punch. This ends up being the cause of a lot of frustration as he no longer feels the thrill and adrenaline he once felt in battle. After all, what's so good about having overwhelming power?

Power of the Verse

One Punch Man varies widely in power, with the lower tiers being around Wall level, the mid tiers being around City level, the higher tiers being around Continent level to Planet level, with the top tiers being Universe level. The verse is also no slouch when it comes to speed, with even the lowest tiers being Supersonic, the higher tiers reaching High Hypersonic and top tiers reaching FTL. The verse also has some decent abilities such as Telekinesis, Sheer Will, Reactive Adaptation, Statistics Amplification, etcetera.

Terms

  • Limiter: A limiter is a theoretical barrier that restricts the physical growth of a being. Genus first coined the term to explain how Saitama obtained his strength. According to his theory, God placed a growth limitation on every being to prevent them from losing purpose. No matter how much one grows, they will eventually hit this upper limit where there is no potential to develop further strength. However, it is possible for an individual to remove their limiter, which results in the development of immeasurable strength. Psykos theorized the limiter independently of Dr. Genus, although she uses the term limit of growth instead.
  • Monsters: Mysterious Beings, or monsters, are non-human creatures that pose a threat to society. They are the primary antagonists of One-Punch Man. According to Dr. Genus, Humans can naturally become monsters from a desire to transform into something else through their bad habits, a complex, or a burst of dissatisfaction with their regular selves. These factors trigger abnormal cell reactions that prompt their transformation. Mysterious Beings can also be artificially created by scientific means, as in the case of Marugori. Non-human life can also be transformed into Mysterious Beings through factors such as pollutants, environmental changes, and genetic engineering. Some Mysterious Beings belong to non-human races and are considered natural adversaries of mankind. For example, Pureblood came from a bloodline of ancient vampires; Boros was born an alien.
  • Hero Association: Heroes are individuals who fight for justice against evil in the world. They protect civilians from harm against monsters, villains, natural disasters, and other threats. Most heroes are registered with the Hero Association and are divided into four classes with increasing prestige: C-Class, B-Class, A-Class and S-Class. Heroes are given number rankings within their respective classes.
