No matter how much he ate... Or how much he drank. His body remained the size of a finger. Even so, the couple loved their little dwarf and named him Mario. | „ |

On a floating island in space, Ojīsan and Obāsan, two elderly Hammer Brothers, live in peaceful happiness with their beloved daughter, Princess Peach. However, word of her beauty reaches the evil King Koopa, who had been plundering treasures from all across space. He arrives with his Koopalings (minus Lemmy) and upon seeing Peach, decides that her beauty makes her the perfect bride for himself and orders the Koopalings to snatch her. Ojīsan and Obāsan beg King Koopa to not take Peach, offering him anything in return, but he shrugs them off and leaves with their protesting daughter.
Peach rejects Koopa's proposal and is thrown in a cold dungeon in his castle on Ogre Island, while the evil king and the Koopalings continue their destructive raids, amassing a huge amount of treasures, to Koopa's pleasure. Meanwhile, Ojīsan and Obāsan are consumed with grief and unable to concentrate on anything else, spend their days missing Peach and worrying about her safety.
Then one day, a shooting star lands at their feet, and when the light abates, it is revealed to be a giant peach, which then splits open and out pops a healthy, mustachioed baby boy. Amazed to be blessed with the child, Ojīsan and Obāsan name him Mario and raise him, astonished by his rapid growth from a baby into a brave young man. While they are proud of him, they still miss Peach and after they accidentally mention her in front of Mario, he asks to be told about what happened to her, which is shown in flashback. He immediately resolves to go and rescue his sister, but while Ojīsan tries to talk him out of the dangerous quest, Mario is confident that he can save her, and tells him and Obāsan not to worry.
Back in Koopa's castle, he once again beseeches Princess Peach to marry him, but she merely misses Ojīsan and Obāsan, and wishes for help. And help is on its way, as Mario ties a bandana with a Peach emblem around his cap and prepares to head out. Obāsan gives him a lunchbox of his favorite food and Ojīsan gives him a gun, saying it is a treasured family heirloom that should come in handy against Koopa. Mario thanks them and bids them farewell, cheerfully singing to himself as he walks through the countryside.
Soon into his journey, a starving Para-Beetle crashes into his head, too weak to fly properly. Mario shares his mushroom lunch with her, and she joins his cause as thanks. The two then come across a Boomerang Brother who had fallen on his back, and when Mario helps him up, he also joins them. Finally, a Spike who had heard about Mario's quest from Ojīsan runs up and asks to join them, as his homeland had been destroyed by Koopa, and he wants to help them defeat the tyrant. The three soon set sail on a rocket-powered airship, a peach emblazoned on its sail.
Meanwhile, Koopa revels over his glittering treasure, commenting that all he needs now is for Peach to marry him. But when he goes down to ask her to answer his proposal once more, Roy alerts him that a suspicious ship is approaching. As soon as they land, the Koopalings attack, on Koopa's orders, soon joined by the king himself. While Mario's friends battle the Koopalings, he goes after their leader, nimbly dodging Koopa's spiked mace until finally defeating him with help from the Para-Beetle and Boomerang Bro and a well-aimed stomp to the face.
Now tied up, and with the Koopalings similarly subdued, Koopa begs Mario not to shoot him and eventually agrees to stop plundering the lands and allow Mario and his friends to return everything he stole. Peach thanks Mario for rescuing him, and they and Mario's three followers depart on the treasure-laden airship, eventually returning home to Ojīsan and Obāsan. In this fairy tale, a shooting star gives a couple the child they had wished for, Mario, but he is only an inch tall. As the child grows older, he becomes adventurous and after climbing a tree and catching a glimpse of a city past the mountains, he becomes determined to travel there. Concerned for his safety, his Mama and Papa say "no" at first, but eventually Papa realizes that it would be doing more harm to keep Mario sheltered forever. He fashions Mario a tiny sword out of a sewing needle, turns a bowl into a boat with small rocket engines, and makes an oar out of a chopstick for Mario to steer it with. He then brings the boat to the river and bids his son farewell as Mario sets sail, singing as he goes.
Mario sees a Spiny Cheep-Cheep jumping out of the water, a flock of Para-Beetles, and even a Bloober with kids flying with its brood. At one point, a Dry Bones rises under Mario, but he uses the rockets to fly his boat off its back and get back onto the water, taking a detour through its eye socket along the way, before it clatters apart and sinks back under the river. Later, Mario is caught in a storm caused by a Lakitu, who laughs as her cloud sends rain and lightning down upon him, struggling against the choppy water until a particularly large wave finally sinks his boat.
When Mario opens his eyes, he finds himself in a tiny bed on a bench in the city, with Princess Peach watching over him. She introduces herself and explains that she had been taking a walk after the storm when she spotted him washed up on shore, unconscious, having floated down the river all the way to the city. He thanks her for saving him and tells her that he had come to the city to learn new things, and having grown fond of the cute, tiny Mario, Peach tells him that he should stay there with her, which Mario is happy to hear.
From then on, the two are always together, with Mario riding on Peach's shoulder as she walks around town. But when she hears heavy, crashing footsteps, Peach screams and tries to flee, only to find herself face-to-face with King Koopa. He is in love with her and demands an answer to his (latest) proposal, but she tells him that she would never marry someone like him. Turning red with anger, Koopa prepares to use force to get what he wanted, but Mario jumps off Peach's shoulder and brandishes his sword at the villain. Koopa laughs at the tiny boy's challenge and tries to step on him, but Mario nimbly dodges every stomp.
Despite Mario's best efforts, Koopa soon manages to snatch him up with his claws and swallows him whole, as Peach watches in horror. Koopa then returns to harassing Peach, but just as he announces his intent to kidnap her, he is brought up short by intense belly pains caused by Mario jumping around his stomach and stabbing him from the inside out with his sword. Peach realizes what's happening as Koopa collapses at her feet and coughs up Mario. He regains consciousness with Mario still perched on his face, but Mario quickly cuts off his horns and eyebrows with three strokes of his sword, causing the Koopa to run away in humiliation while the humans laugh. Peach thanks Mario for defeating Koopa, and then notices a magic wish-granting hammer he had dropped as he fled, which she uses to grant Mario's wish to become a full-sized young man. The two then get into a hovercraft and fly back to Mario's home to continue their lives together.Once upon a time there lived the evil and vain Queen Koopa (Bowser). Day in and day out, she asked her magic mirror who the fairest in the land was, and it always said it was her until one day it tells her that while she is the fairest in her land, Princess Peach, from the neighboring kingdom, is the fairest in the world. From that moment on, Koopa is consumed with hatred for Peach, and eventually orders the Koopalings, Roy, Wendy, Morton and Iggy to erase her from the world.
Unaware of the danger, Peach is busy collecting flowers by a lake when she is beset by the Koopalings, who remark that it's a shame they have to erase such a cute princess. Princess Peach cries for help, and is heard by Mario, who arrives just in time to fight off the Koopalings and flee with the damsel. They escape to a house in the woods that is filled with cute, tiny furniture. The seven dwarves of the forest, the Toads, soon come home and greet their old friend Mario, surprised but pleased to see him there. Mario tells them what happened and they vow to house and protect the princess for him, and he sets off on his travels once more.
Meanwhile, the Koopalings report back to the angry Queen Koopa, who sends them away and consults the mirror once more. But while it confirms that Peach is still the fairest of them all, it also tells the queen that she is hiding with the Toads. Koopa decides to deal with her herself, and concocts a poison in her basement chemistry lab, injecting it into an apple once it is ready.
In the forest, Peach has been happily doing the cooking and cleaning for the Toads when they go out to do their work, but while they are away, Koopa appears at the window, disguised as an old woman. She asks if Peach would like to buy some apples and suggest she try one to see how delicious they are. Excited about the prospect of sharing the apples with the Toads later, Peach takes a bite and instantly drops to the floor in a death-like sleep. Laughing, Koopa takes off her cloak and crows that she is now the fairest in the world, before flying off back to her castle.
When the Toads arrive home, they find Peach, and upon hearing their cries of sorrow over her death, Mario rushes back. He finds them standing around the princess, now laid out on a bed in the woods, and they tearfully tell him they couldn't guarantee her safety after all. While the Toads watch in bated breath, Mario takes out a potion given to him by a goddess he had helped in a foreign land and administers it to Peach, who then wakes up. The Toads cheer and Mario is relived, but when Peach recalls that she had eaten an apple before falling asleep, he reasons that it must have been Koopa and runs off in a rage, intent on punishing her for what she did.
With Peach and the Toads right behind him, Mario enters the castle and plows through an army of Goombas, finally confronting Koopa in her throne room. However, she sicks Roy, Wendy, Morton and Larry on Mario, and they blast him with electricity from their magic wands as Peach cries out and Koopa laughs in triumph. But then the Toads leap into Mario, giving him a power-up: he grows larger and breaks free of the shock, promptly sends the Koopalings flying and then chases after Koopa. Before he can catch her, she grabs Peach and holds a knife to the princess's throat, forcing Mario to stop in his tracks.
Once more surrounded by the Toads, Mario is unsure of what to do, but just then Luigi appears to help his brother. He hits Koopa over the head with a mallet and while Peach returns to Mario's side, Luigi delivers a kick to the queen's stomach. The two brothers then fling her against the magic mirror, and she lands in a heap on the floor while the protagonists laugh. Mario, Luigi, Peach and the Toads then leave Koopa's Castle and live happily ever after.Key: Momotarō | Issun-bōshi | Shirayuki-hime
