Introduction

Adaptation is the ability to adapt powers or skills in response to immediate threats and the ability to survive and adapt to different situations and natural environments. This exists in the real world, though it usually takes over a thousand years to occur, many times in fiction, users can adapt to things in a far shorter timeframe.

Users can either instantly develop powers or abilities to deal with threats or their bodies dynamically learn from experience. Depending on the user's control of the power or genetic structure, the reactive effects can be permanent or temporary. This can include developing abilities to breathe underwater or in air with variable compositions, withstand different atmospheric pressures, live in much colder or hotter climates, see in greater darkness, develop camouflage coloring to hide from threats, after a certain situation, the user's skin may become tougher, they may display increased IQ after a difficult test or fortified emotions after a personal argument, the user may be able to read different languages after moments of looking them up or be able to withstand a constant bombardment of radiation, some users may develop Enhanced Speed after being shot, or grow Dermal Armor, or gain the opposite power of their opponent, etcetera.

Examples of Adaptation

  • Atmospheric Adaptation to changing gases.
  • Damage Memorization to render oneself immune to certain types of attacks, such as limb severing.
  • Enhanced Durability before being hit by a semi.
  • Enhanced Intelligence in against mentally incomprehensible threats.
  • Enhanced Strength when being attacked by foes of great numbers.
  • Flight when falling off of a cliff.
  • Night Vision after being in the dark for a few seconds.
  • Omnilingualism when attempting to read or listen to a different language.
  • Teleportation if confronted by a force much stronger than oneself.

(Note: These are not immediate abilities with Adaptation gains just examples of what Adaptation can do)

Applications

  • Standard: In this case, the character is adapting, though over a long period.
  • Reactive: In this case, the character is adapting to various changes around them to make sure their body is suited to it. These happen normally very fast or instantaneously.
