Background

Alice is also known as the Book of Truth and the "mansion" in actuality is a book consisting of the thoughts and dreams of those it traps, creating a page designated for each, which encapsulate their deepest dreams and desires. For the majority of the manga, Alice tries to make it to the book's zeroth page, the only means of escaping, while meeting many people who are dissatisfied with their lives, along the way.

It is later revealed that she was once the sickly, bedridden princess of an unspecified country with the uncanny ability to not forget anything that she had experienced. She was strongly obsessed with reading and gaining knowledge of the world. As a result, she created a powerful artifact known as the "Book of Truth", which can absorb the thoughts of anyone it comes across. She merged with the book, gaining its powers, and became an enemy of humanity, at first humanity was successful in sealing her.

However, due to the corruption and greed of humanity wanting to use her books for weapons of war, the war eventually opened the seal she was in, re-awakening her, this time humanity's weapons did not work against her and she devoured them all, with no humans existing anymore in the world.
