Effect Inversion
Background
Effect Inversion is the ability to reverse the intended effects of phenomena that target the user. Instead of suffering harm, debilitation, or negative consequences, the user gains benefits, power, or advantages from what should have afflicted them.
This is distinct from Resistance or Immunity. A character with Resistance withstands the effect; a character with Immunity is unaffected entirely. A character with Effect Inversion is affected, but the effect produces the opposite result: Poison heals, curses empower, corruption purifies, what should destroy strengthens, etcetera.
The user does not negate or cancel the effect. The effect still occurs, it simply does not function as intended and instead benefits the user. This can also be considered a sub-type of Reactive Evolution.
Also Called
- Harm Inversion
- Detrimental Conversion
- Adverse Reversal
- Negative Inversion
Possible Applications
- Converting harmful environmental effects into beneficial ones (poisonous atmospheres heal, cursed grounds empower)
- Turning enemy attacks that inflict status effects into buffs
- Gaining power from corruptive or infectious agents that should destroy
- Benefiting from curses, hexes, or other malicious magic
- Thriving in conditions that should be lethal to others
- Turning attempts to drain or absorb the user's power into empowerment instead
Practical Uses
- Curse Reversal: A curse intended to weaken or kill the user instead grants strength, vitality, or some other benefit. The curse is still active, but its effects are inverted.
- Corruption Empowerment: A corruptive agent that should destroy or corrupt the user instead enhances them. Viral infections may make them stronger; demonic energy may purify them.
- Hazard Adaptation: Environmental effects that should be lethal (toxic gas, radiation, cursed ground, magical contamination) instead provide healing, energy, or power to the user.
- Attack Inversion: Attacks that carry negative secondary effects (poison, petrification, life drain) instead apply positive effects to the user. The user is healed, strengthened, or buffed by what should harm them.
- Status Conversion: Status effects that should debilitate (paralysis, confusion, fear) instead produce beneficial states (haste, clarity, courage).
- Drain Reversal: Attempts to drain the user's life force, energy, or power instead transfer energy to the user or strengthen them.
Potential Applications
- Harm Inversion: Damage or harm becomes healing or restoration.
- Curse Inversion: Curses and hexes become blessings and buffs.
- Corruption Inversion: Corruptive agents make the user stronger or purify them.
- Status Inversion: Negative status effects become positive ones.
- Environmental Inversion: Hazardous environments become beneficial to the user.
- Drain Inversion: Attempts to drain the user instead empower them.
Possible Limitations
- The inversion may only apply to specific types of effects (curses, poisons, corruptive agents, etcetera).
- The user may still be affected by the physical components of an effect even if the intended result is inverted (They could still be pushed by an explosion even if the fire heals them).
Users
- Zero (Mega Man X): The Sigma Virus which corrupts other reploids doesn't affect Zero and instead amplifies him.
