Herobrine is a popular internet horror character from a creepypasta for Minecraft. It is a being that appears in someone's game and usually hides from the player.

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Herobrine’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!
They are first found when someone recently spawned a new world in single-player Minecraft, appearing in a dense fog. When seen, Herobrine quickly ran into the fog. As the player continued through the game, they noticed out of place things, such as 2x2 tunnels in the rocks, small perfect pyramids of sand in the ocean, and a grove of trees with all their leaves cut fof. Whenever the player believed they found Herobrine in the fog, it would always disappear. When trying to create a forum post about the mysterious entity, the post was deleted with a PM from the username "Herobrine" telling the user to stop. Trying to go onto Herobrine's profile caused th epage to 404. When receiving an email from another user, they explain how he had seen the entity too and had a small 'directory' for other users who had seen the entity. All of these people that claimed to have seen Herobrine noted that their worlds had many man-made features and that the player had no pupils. When looking into the name of Herobrine it was found to be frequently used by the brother of Notch, when asking Notch if he had a brother, Notched responded 'I did, but he is no longer with us.'

Despite many people at Mojang constantly denying the existence of Herobrine, some will play along and tease the idea of him being in the game.
At one point whenever players asked Notch about Herobrine, they would get an email that says the following:

Hi,
This is an automatic reply because your email contained the word "Herobrine". I receive quite a few emails about Herobrine, and can't reply to them all manually.
Herobrine does not, and never has been part of Minecraft, nor do I have a dead brother.

There is no entity like Herobrine in Minecraft, there is no code that can even allow for any entity to act like Herobrine in the game.

Original Story vs. Later Stories

This section will discuss things used in future Herobrine stories/interpretations that technically go against the original intention or wasn't told in the original post.

Malicious Herobrine

While other interpretations has Herobrine as an evil entity that attacks and kills the player, the initial story never implied this. Herobrine would try everything to instead stay far away from the player and remove any mention of its existence, seemingly only wanting to go around and build by itself.

Possession

Some later interpretations gave Herobrine the ability to possess animals in the game, though this is never alluded too in the original story. The only real references is the player mistaking Herobrine for an animal before seeing its another player character.

Spawnning Undead Mobs

Some later interpretations have him able to spawn undead mobs, however, Herobrine is never implied to have any insane level of control over the game in the original story. The most he was doing resulted in weird man-made structures around the map.
