“ Aw, that doesn't matter. I don't need to win to be happy. I'm just happy knowing my family and friends are supporting me. And I'm happy to be playing amazing opponents like you. ...I'm playing because it's fun. But winning wouldn't be so bad. „

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ava’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

The Club
Ava moves out of town, leaving her old friends behind. Upon arriving at her new house, she discovers an old box containing cards that once belonged to her mother. Still upset about the move, she is encouraged by her father to try making new friends. The next day at her new school, she attempts to join several clubs but fails to get into any of them. Just as she is about to give up on making friends, Joshua approaches her and leaves a note telling her to go to a specific room.

Joshua teaches Ava the basics of the Pokémon TCG, and she decides to use her mother's old deck. As a beginner, Ava is easily defeated by Joshua in her first battle, which frustrates her. She nearly gives up until her father stops her and spends the night teaching her how to battle and how to feel the emotion of the match.

The next morning, Ava challenges Joshua again and defeats him, along with the other members of the Pokémon Club, earning recognition and a place in the group. While celebrating, she is approached by a mysterious girl who teases her, asking whether she could beat World Championships players.

Regionals
Ava entered her first championship, competing in regional challenges. Her first opponent was a player named Tonio, whom she defeated without much difficulty. Meanwhile, she discovered that Celestine was battling her father as a way to destabilize her. Ava continued winning matches as she advanced toward the finals.

The tournament finals were a best-of-three match between Ava and Celestine. Each won one battle, forcing a deciding game. During the final match, Celestine tried to mentally break Ava so she could not continue. However, after seeing the emotion on her father's and Joshua's faces as they cheered for her, Ava pulled herself together, evolved her Gloom into Vileplume, and used Allergy Storm, surprising Celestine and everyone else. The move required a coin flip to work, and Ava took the chance, landed heads, and defeated her rival to become the regional champion of that year's competition. Afterwards, Celestine thanked her and made peace with Ava.

International
At some point before Internationals, Ava began to stand out and became a rising sensation among Pokémon TCG players. She grew closer to Joshua and formed a friendship with Celestine. This led to an invitation to compete in the International Championships. Upon arriving, she met a young girl and her mother who were fans of hers, as well as Team Falinks, the highest-ranked team in the world, and its leader, the reigning World Champion, Edgar Troy.

The next day, after advancing to the next stage of the competition while her friends did not, Ava decided to train hard. However, during a moment of relaxation, she lost her entire original deck. Wanting to help, Celestine and Joshua gave up all their own cards to rebuild a deck for Ava. After trading everything they had to assemble the main deck she used in the competition, the final card was given as a gift by the little girl Ava had met the day before.

Back in the competition, Ava defeated each member of Team Falinks, drawing Edgar Troy's attention. When she reached the final, Ava gained a false sense of victory when Edgar conceded the first round. He then began to dominate the match. In the third and final round, Ava initially held the upper hand, but this turned out to be part of Edgar's plan—he made a move that forced her to shuffle her hand, stripping her of every advantage. From there, Edgar easily defeated Ava. Disappointed that she had let down her fans and friends, Ava left the arena and apologized to Joshua and Celestine for her loss.

Worlds
It is revealed that as time passed, Ava drifted away from Pokémon TCG matches. Eventually, her parents intervened, and her mother told her about her own past as a Pokémon player. After reconciling with Celestine and Joshua, Ava accepted an invitation to compete in the World Championship.

Before the championship began, Ava encountered Edgar again, who immediately started teasing her, but she chose to move on. In the competition, she defeated her opponents and reached the final, once again facing Edgar. The match started similarly to their previous one, with Edgar repeating some of the same plays. In the third and final round, Ava realized that her friends and family were on her side, and she began laughing, which unsettled Edgar.

Close to victory, Edgar was about to launch a full-force attack with his Groudon, while Ava had only an Oddish on her bench. Before the decisive battle began, Edgar stressed that the real reason to play the game is to win. In response, Ava revealed that she had created a strategy for the match, and after making Edgar understand her real reason for playing, the two decided to simply enjoy the game. With the cheers of everyone she had met along the way, Ava defeated Edgar Troy and became the new World Champion.

Notable Techniques

Grass Deck

Ava uses a Grass deck focused on Oddish. She has four other decks from her mother, one of which contains a Spoink.

Other

Standard Tactics: Ava will focus and pretend as if the battle is in a satdium with her Oddish by her side, getting more into the battle.

Weaknesses: Ava gets panic attacks and flustered easily in matches, though when she remembers to just have fun and think about all her friends cheering her on she feels better.

Explanations

The Secret to Battling

It's explained by Ava's dad that the secret to a Pokémon battle is imagining in one's head that the battle is real and actually happening along with their Pokémon being besides them[1]. The imagination makes one grow a strong bond with their Pokémon being able to picture the battles in their mind, see the stadium and do better[1]. Seeing it as a battlefield allows the card dueler to perform more into the zone[1] forging a bond with the Pokémon even though they aren't actually there[1]. This also allows them to see the multiple possibilities in a battle to use to counter the opponent[1].

Imagining can also allow someone to calm down when having a panic attack or nervous breakdown[2].

Trivia

  • Ava's voice actor (Nyara Afshar) seems to have some similarities to her ethnicity, being both Iranian and Indian with Ava seemingly having Southeast Asian and South Asian features.
  • Despite Joshua remarking that Ava's cards are old, she has Defiance Band, which was first released in the Scarlet & Violet expansion in 2023.
  • Ava's Oddish card, Oddish (SVP Promo 102), appeared in this episode before it existed in the real-life TCG. It is the only card shown in this episode to share that trait.
    • A different Oddish card that already existed prior to the episode appears when Ava first opens the shoebox. However, she never uses this Oddish card at any point during the series.
  • When Ava evolves her Gloom into Vileplume, which has a maximum of 150 HP, it then has 80 HP remaining instead, making Panic Mask ineffective. This is symbolized by the binds being broken.
  • Some information is missing, as Ava's Vileplume and Celestine's Mismagius do not currently exist as real TCG cards. The Mismagius appears to have a maximum of 260 HP and 60 damage applied to it, while the Dizzying Pollen move on Ava's Vileplume appears to list 110 power, but with a condition attached. For Vileplume to have defeated the Mismagius, the condition of landing heads for Dizzying Pollen must have raised the move's power to at least 200.
  • In Joshua's second match against Ava, Ava plays a card called "Defiance Band."
    • Effect: Defiance Band (Scarlet & Violet 169) can be attached to a Pokémon. If the user has more Prize cards remaining than the opponent, that Pokémon deals an additional 30 damage with its attacks. Ava has 2 Prize cards remaining while Joshua has only 1, so this requirement is met.
    • Attacking: Ava attaches Defiance Band to her Oddish (SVP Promo 102) and attacks the opposing Jolteon ex (EX Delta Species 109) with Grass Knot for 100 damage, knocking it out.
    • Win: Since the knocked-out Jolteon is an "ex" Pokémon, Ava takes 2 Prize cards for defeating it. Ava therefore takes her last 2 Prize cards, earning the win.
    • Issue: However, the circumstances of the game make it impossible for Oddish to have dealt 100 damage in one turn as shown. Oddish's strongest move, Grass Knot, deals 20 damage for each Colorless Energy in the opposing Active Pokémon's retreat cost, in this case Jolteon's. However, that Jolteon has no retreat cost, so this move would deal 0 damage. Oddish would instead have to use Razor Leaf, which has 10 power. Combined with Defiance Band's additional 30 damage, Oddish could only have dealt 40 damage in one turn.
