"EXPLAINED ANOMALY"
THE FOLLOWING PAGE HAS BEEN RECLASSIFIED AS EXPLAINED. NATURAL PHENOMENON IS PSR B0531+21 (CRAB PULSAR).
I don't want to go.
~ SCP-1548-EX's final transmission

Background

SCP-1548-EX, formerly classified as an anomalous entity known as "The Hateful Star," was initially discovered in 1949 at the Yerkes' Observatory in Chicago, Illinois. Originally believed to be a sentient, malevolent star approximately 24 light years away from Earth, the object was observed sending morse code messages through pulses of ionizing radiation. These messages were aggressive, involving the death, destruction, and humiliation of the human race.

The object was later identified as a non-anomalous pulsar - specifically PSR B0531+21 in the Crab Nebula - and reclassified as -EX. The perceived messages were determined to be a fluke of cosmic proportions, with random pulses coincidentally forming morse code patterns. The pulsar was 2.41 solar masses, exceeding the theoretical limit of 2.3 solar masses for neutron star stability, and was surviving by being in motion at approximately 85% of the speed of light. It eventually collapsed in a planck second when it shifted opposite its direction of motion.

Appearance

  • Final Form: Collapsed into a black hole after directional shift, releasing a massive radio burst.

Personality

  • Final "Message": The last comprehensible pattern formed "I don't want to go", though this was also coincidental.

Relationships

Foundation Personnel

  • Dr. Thompson - Lead physicist studying the object's properties and eventual collapse
  • Dr. Yan - Project overseer who managed the transition after reclassification

Explanations

SCP-1548-EX represents a unique case in Foundation history where an apparently anomalous, malevolent entity was revealed to be a natural astronomical phenomenon - specifically a pulsar that happened to create morse code patterns through pure coincidence. As a neutron star exceeding the Chandrasekhar limit of 2.3 solar masses, it maintained stability only through extreme rotation and relativistic motion.

When neutron stars exceed this mass limit, they lack sufficient neutron degeneracy pressure to counteract their own gravity. SCP-1548-EX compensated through centrifugal force from rapid rotation and relativistic effects from traveling at 85% light speed. However, this created an inherently unstable system - any change in angular momentum or direction would eliminate these compensating forces, resulting in immediate gravitational collapse. When the pulsar shifted direction opposite to its motion vector, it lost the relativistic mass reduction effect and collapsed into a black hole within a Planck time (10^-43 seconds), forming what astronomers call a "blitzar" event.

The tier reduction when collapsing into a black hole reflects the fundamental change in energy output: while a pulsar actively converts rotational and magnetic energy into powerful radiation that can affect planetary systems from dozens of light-years away, a black hole of the same mass only affects its immediate gravitational vicinity and emits negligible Hawking radiation.
