Adelaide Parade
The Fight Is Over
Sometimes I feel like I’m just like a boat upon a winding river, twisting toward an endless black sea. Further and further, drifting away from where I want to be. Who I want to be.
~ Wirt
The Beast? We don’t know anything about that! We’re just two lost kids trying to get home!
~ Wirt
I have my own problems to take care of. Here, this one is yours
~ Wirt
Alright, my turn huh? Ok well. It's weird to admit it, but, well, I-I have this crush on this girl....That's all. And I secretly whisper poetry to myself in my room at night
~ Wirt

Background

Wirt is a teenage boy who has a crush on his schoolmate Sara, and he made a tape to give to her on Halloween. He went to find Sara at the graveyard where she and her friends were hanging out, and his half-brother, Greg, tagged along. Because of Wirt's disliking towards his stepfather, he disliked Greg as well, although he was fairly tolerant of Greg’s antics until they started getting in the way. When Wirt was about to give his tape to Sara, he and Greg ended up running away instead, and when trying to avoid a train, the two fell into a lake and blacked out. When they woke up, they had entered the Unknown. They would soon meet a talking bird named Beatrice, who, claiming she was “honor-bound” to Greg for saving her from a bush she was stuck in, directed them to the witch Adelaide to help them get home. Unbeknownst to Wirt and Greg, however, Adelaide actually enslaves children, and Beatrice has made a deal with her to turn in the brothers to be her servants in exchange for a pair of scissors that could turn Beatrice and her family back to humans. When Adelaide trapped the brothers, Beatrice managed to kill her by opening a window and letting in the fresh night air, melting her away. The brothers continued their journey, this time without Beatrice as Wirt lacks the full context of the situation and believes she betrayed them. Upon learning that Wirt is about to have his soul claimed by the Beast, Greg let himself be claimed in his brother's place. When he woke up and saw that his brother was gone, Wirt went to search for him, once again aided by Beatrice. Wirt arrived right after a fight between the Woodsman and the Beast, and the latter tried to tempt Wirt to take the Woodsman's place as the new lantern-bearer to save Greg. However, Wirt realized that the lantern actually contained the Beast's soul, so he instead refused and rescued Greg, carrying him home. The Woodsman is then shown killing the Beast via blowing his soul out. Wirt wakes up in a hospital, and is initially panicked before realizing that Greg is safe and busy telling their friends about their adventures in the Unknown. Wirt finally confesses his feelings to Sara, and she agrees to come over to his house to use his tape player.

General Information

Name: Wirt

Origin: Over the Garden Wall

Gender: Male

Age: 14 to 18

Classification: Human

Status: Alive

Alignment: True Neutral (Wirt often thinks about the safety of both him and his brother Greg, over anything else. Often times, Wirt can be really selfish and only think of himself when he is stressed or angry. However, Wirt often states that he has a responsibility to make sure his brother gets home at all costs. This is best seen when Wirt started to become depressed at the fact that the possibility of going home was getting slimmer. He gave up on saving his brother and started becoming a tree due to his negative emotions. However, when his brother was in trouble, Wirt instantly came to his senses and saved his brother from The Beast)

Other

Standard Tactics: Wirt will always try to talk his way out of a situation by giving the person what they want or striking a deal. He will often try and outsmart his opponent and make a plan during a life threatening event. If Wirt feels like there is no possible way to win, he will either run or fight back based on the situation,

Weaknesses: Wirt isn't very brave and will likely cower in fear if the person seems to be a huge threat. He is also very likely to become flustered or depressed if things don't go his way. Wirt is also very self conscious and it can lead to him overthinking situations a lot.

Trivia

  • Wirt is also the main protagonist of Tome of The Unknown.
  • Wirt was one of the first characters to be seen in a short preview as part of a sales video by Cartoon Network in June 2013.
  • Wirt is overly cautious of many things, and prefers to be by himself. However, he has Gregory to look after.
  • In another show called "Clarence", in the episode "Lil' Buddy". When Clarence is about to bury his doll, a silhouette of him and Greg in the right can be seen walking in the background.
  • His secret passions are poetry and playing the clarinet.
  • The name means "worthy" or "powerful" and "strong".
  • Wirt, along with Greg and the frog, may appear to be from the year the setting takes place, but in fact he appears to be from the late 20th century, still wearing his costume before he and Greg got lost on Halloween. Sometimes it was hinted throughout his remarks, reasoning and knowledge seemingly out of place of that era.
  • Making cassette tapes for significant others was a popular pastime in the late 70s and 80s (almost to a cliche point).
  • Judging from how Sara states that she does not own a cassette tape player, one can infer that the story takes place in a modern setting.
  • In one of concept art Wirt's original name was Walter. This may be unintentional, but his name makes a pun out of the phrase 'Worry Wart', aptly capturing Wirt's disposition.
  • The cape he wears is a WWII nurse cape.
  • Wirt's hat is made from what looks like a Santa hat with the fuzz cut off.
  • The shot of Wirt's room in "Into the Unknown" shows that he owns a book on interior design, which explains how Wirt recognized the difference in architecture of the two mansions in episode 5, "Mad Love".
  • Wirt can play the bassoon quite well, as shown in "Lullaby in Frogland."
