"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.
Well now I know they'll never let me out. They'll keep me a secret here until someday when I'm an old old man i'll sneak away from them and die. It isn't easy though, inside me I'm screaming and yelling and howling like a trapped animal and nobody pays any addition. If I had arms I could kill myself. If I had legs I could run away. If I had a voice I could talk and be some kind of company for myself, i could yell for help but nobody help me not even God because there isn't any God couldn't be in a place like this... And... And yet I've just got to do something because I... I don't see how I can go on like this much longer... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me... S.O.S help me...

Trivia

  • The name Johnny Got His Gun is based on the saying "Johnny get your gun" a rally call commonly used to get young Americans to join the army in late 19th and early 20th centuries.[1]
  • Joe's early life in Colorado and Los Angles is based of Dalton Trumbo's early life.[2]
  • The story of Johnny Got His Gun is inspired by articles about two men with severe injuries that Trumbo read about: the tearful hospital visit of Edward, Prince of Wales to Curley Christian, considered to be the first and only Canadian soldier in WWI who was a quadruple amputee, and a British major whose body was damaged so horrifically that he was reported as MIA to his family. The family would later learn the truth years after his death in the hospital[2][3]
  • In the 1971 film adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun Joe is played by Timothy Bottoms and Kerry MacLane.[4]
  • The song One by Metallica uses clips from Johnny Got His Gun in its music video due to the song and the novel sharing a similar story.[5]
    • Additional Metallica bought the rights to the Johnny Got His Gun movie so they wouldn't have to pay royalties.
